Discover Villards-d'heria, a gem in Jura, Franche-Comté

From Moirans-en-Montagne, the circuit - which is quite technical in the forest sections at the beginning and the end of the trail and which is hilly along the old Roman road - heads through the Sapey plateau, also nicknamed “The Desert” due to the dryness of its soil. From the MOIRANS-EN-MONTAGNE signpost, (), follow “route de Saint-Laurent” to the left in front of the high school (red MTB waymarking no. 108). Head past the cemetery and turn left in the industrial area. Head past the water treatment plant and continue right on the path that heads under the D 470 towards Sous le Pont. Reach En Var to your right via the white path and then take the muddy trail bordered by trees to your left to reach Champ Piernet. Follow the grassy trail to your left that soon becomes stony and heads through the Bois de la Réfrèche with its two viewpoints over the Vouglans lake, before exiting at Les Araignées. Follow the road that runs alongside the départementale road and ascend the bank to the Regardoir parking lot. Soak up the view over the lake, head along the left of the parking lot and find the LE REGARDOIR crossroads; a trail burrows into the forest to your left.Follow the path that is stony in places and that brushes along the départementale road, then take an abandoned road to reach an inn. Take the D 301 to your left for 40 m and turn right onto the white path parallel to the road. This straight path heads down below the church towards the Voie Romaine crossroads (a rather complicated crossroads, pay attention to the waymarking).Head straight across the crossroads to follow the old roman road (red MTB waymarking no. 107) without really changing direction, crossing a road and coming to Sapey pasture (which fell victim to a fire in 2018 which deeply affected its landscape).Turn right onto a white path through dry grasslands (cattle grids), head past En Sapoy and reach La Croix de Sac. Take the underground road to your right that crosses under the D 470. Follow the road into the village to reach the MEUSSIA crossroads. Take the first road on your right to the D 27 and follow the D 27 to La Guille. Cross the road and take the shaded white path opposite you that gradually ascends into the forest. After a short descend into the pastures, reach the village of Coulouvre through Côte de Guy.  Head through the village, past COULOUVRE and En Chaspereille, and continue on the D 296 to a hamlet. Descend to your left on exiting the hamlet, using a path to the centre of the village of CRENANS (fountain). Taking the road to your left (Red MTB waymarking no. 108), head to Sous la Crochère.Take the stony and earthy path to your right into the forest. Head past a sand pit and join up with a small road. Quickly turn left (discovery trail: The soaring lake) and follow a path that is very stony in places along a wetland, called l’Etang. Exit at La Bessoule onto a cement road. Head up this steep road towards the left. Take the path to your left, just before a farm, through a clearing for 100 m (two agricultural gates to open and close) to head back down to La Montée de la Bessoule in Moirans-en-Montagne.Cross the road and continue towards the Pierre Vernotte high school to the parking lot you started in.

Boxwood, pine and birch trees will be your faithful companions on this walk through the dry grasslands of the Lezan Rock, scattered with beautiful viewpoints over the Bienne valley. Starting at the Health Course, the trail (yellow waymarking) follows the stone path to the right (sporty course) and then enters the forest before reaching la Varesse. Turn left to follow the road suitable for vehicles. Further on, it heads along a few pastures. The main path branches off to the left and then enters the forest. Ascend to the Lezan Rock. The trail enters a pasture to the left (bicycle path) and then heads right before curving to the left. It heads down for some time along the edge of the Lezan Rock before reaching THE DONKEY’S STEP. Without crossing the second bicycle path, head straight ahead along the trail and exit onto an open combe, with a power line running through it. Head up the combe’s east side to reach a good trail ascending southwards. At the top (electrical tower), turn left and reach a small pass (viewpoint over the la Prat barn, down to your right). The well-cleared trail through boxwood ascends to the left along the ridge line, before gradually descending into a coniferous forest. The path widens (stone fountain trough under a tufa waterfall, a limestone concretion deposited onto foam). Continue along the path, head past Tré la Croix and return to the starting point.

This hike, mainly through forests, offers several beautiful escapes and especially access to the Fyète well, a geological curiosity that is typical to karstic environments. From the Fountain square, the trail takes the road northbound (yellow waymarking), until it exits the hamlet at Côte de Guy. The road gradually heads up to the right, through a forest, until its reaches the ridge. Branch off to the right and follow a path until you come to a first opening to the east (viewpoint onto the Roche d’Antre) Continue for around 500m to access FYETE WELL. The well can be reached within 5 mins there and back. Descend to the left and access to edge of the well. Back at “chemin de crête”, head south (viewpoint to the west over the villages of Coulouvre and, further along, Charchilla). In the background, locate the furrow in the Ain valley occupied by the Lake of Vouglans). Head past the viewpoint and descend to la Baume. Turn right to descend on a rocky trail that, after two zigzags, comes to the hamlet of Coulouvre. Take the D 296 to the right for a few meters to reach your starting point.

Departing from the Atelier des savoir-faire parking lot, the craftsmanship trail is an unusual hiking circuit spanning 3 kilometres between Ravilloles and Cuttura... Playful works designed by our artisans are dotted about the itinerary and provide an original view of local heritage and craftsmanship. Start in the ATELIER DES SAVOIR-FAIRE parking lot. Pass under the Door of Time and along the picnic area. Take the 2 stone steps and walk along the fencing until you reach the belvedere (yellow waymarking). From the World clock, head down the hill and its steps to reach Chemin du Moulin d’Aval. Cross the D 118 with care and go through the field following along the bank of the Lizon river. The cows are sometimes in the pasture. Stay calm! At spinning top bridge, be sure to stay on the boardwalk. The trail follows the edge of the Cuttura lake until it reaches the Passion zone. The stony path ascends to the right into the undergrowth (white and red waymarking). >In front of the knowledgeable hand brandishing a horseshoe, the forge and the Etraz forebay smithy can be accessed, within 5 mins there-and-back. Once back, follow the path to your right along the recently restored dry-stone wall and exit on to the D 118, at the "stop" hand. Be careful! Head 20 m up the road for a better view of traffic and cross the D118 again.The white path heads gradually uphill. When you reach the horse box - to your left in the field - head to the suspended work to your right. Take the trail up into the woods to find the Elegant lady. The trail passes under her dress and continues into the woods. Continue through this small forest, walking from hand to hand, until you reach the wooden seats. Upon exiting the woods, regain the white path and follow it around to the right until you enter the village of Ravilloles at les Rochettes. Continue with a round trip to the Aval Mill 100 metres away (yellow waymarking) Back at les Rochettes, return to the village and the ATELIER DES SAVOIR FAIRE.

From Maisod, whose castle once welcomed the poet Lamartine, this easy hike offers a walk along the lake of Vouglans and an immersion into the aromas of pine and boxwood. From MAISOD, the trail follows (yellow waymarking) rue Pont-de-la-Pyle to the Chapel before descending to To the well. Ascend the rue du Château to your left (low wall with half-moon stones) and follow a farm path (on the left, a reservoir in cut stone used today for fire control). The trail heads into a forest planted with pine trees and comes to a rocky boundary. Quickly descend to Sur la Fratte, cutting through the boxwood. The BELVEDERE OF SUR LA FRATTE can be reached within 10 minutes there and back to your right (yellow and red waymarking and then yellow waymarking). Head to a forest platform and follow a wide path to your left that descends to the viewpoint over the lake. On returning to Sur la Fratte, the well-shaded trail heads south (yellow and red waymarking) (boxwood, oak trees, fir trees, white birch trees). After the water treatment plant, the trail crosses a wide path and descends to the edge of the beach (picnic tables). Follow this “coastal” trail to the left, and then take the road above the port. Head past a holiday village and take the road to reach La Pierre Fendue. Head up the steep path to your left (yellow waymarking) towards a campsite. Head past a forest clearing and exit onto the route du Mont du Cerf at the Trélachaume campsite. Follow this road to the left for 50 meters, and then go right twice towards Maisod. Take the trail through the forest to your left, on the right of a football pitch. At the first houses in Maisod, take rue des Cyclamens to the left, then head down rue du Château until you come to the foot of the Chapel. Head back to the MAISOD town hall parking lot the same way you came.

From the sunny hillside of the Bienne valley to the shaded and wooded hillside of the Ain valley, a long walk linking the industrious hamlets around Montcusel and Martinga. From the town hall (yellow waymarking), the trail descends to the village centre in MONTCUSEL, before ascending to the left via “rue de la niella” to reach la Neyelle. Follow the shaded path to the right and exit onto the hand-gliding take-off area. Continue on the main road that descends southwards. Branch off to the east, then head north, go past the Cul de la Pra and then ascend to the hamlet of GRAND SERVE. Follow a road to the right until you reach la Queille after two bends. Descend on a good path along the side of the hill looking over Douvre. Arrive at les Vignes (wide bend). Continue to your left to the bottom of a pasture. A gravel path, with two bends, opens onto a meadow (boxwood, junipers, pine trees, white birches). Head along the pasture and continue north on a sunken path. Reach Chanon. Continue on the road to your right until you come to CHANON LAKE, and then la Côte de Venière. The stone path to your left borders the meadows before reaching Chemin de Cruzille, under the forest canopy. Head under a power line (viewpoint over the Ain valley at the foot of the Vouglans dam). Take an earthy path in a southwestern direction heading along the Owl’s mound. The stony path passes through la Meille and descends to NEZAN.   Follow the road to the left and, at a drinking trough, ascend to the right on a trail followed by a road. Around 50 m after a pass (725 m, viewpoint), return to MONTCUSEL to the right.

The blue lakes, bordered and punctuated by many viewpoints, reflect the discreet charm of the villages perched over the Ain and the Bienne rivers. From MONTCUSEL (Black MTB waymarking no. 56), head down the main road towards MARTIGNA and up the D 295 for 800 metres.Leave the D 295 and follow a small road to your left for 100 m before turning right onto an earthy path through the forest until you reach La Meille.Follow the stony path to your right downhill, staying in the forest, and you will reach “Chemin de Cruzille”. Continue straight on the downhill path to reach a good path, follow this path to the right until you come to Côte de Venière. (Possibility of taking the 2 km tour of the Chanon lake to your right.)From Côte de Venière, head up the D 295 to your left through a landscape that opens onto the Chanon Lake towards the village of MARTIGNA. On arriving at the hamlet of Le Chalet, at the foot of the village, take the path to your left overlooking the road and head to Chemin des Buis.  Take the stony path to your left towards Aux Enfingues. (Possibility of taking a round trip to the THREE STRAIRS BELVEDERE (BELVÉDÈRE DES 3 ESCALIERS) 400 metres away: viewpoint over Chanon lake and the outstretched Jura mountains).Continue on the stony and earthy forest path towards the BELVEDERE OF BIEF DESSOUS (BELVÉDÈRE DU BIEF DESSOUS), which ascends slightly for 1.5 km, before heading back down to the D 299. Follow the road to your right until you reach the BELVEDERE OF BIEF DESSOUS.Follow the forest path to your left towards Sur Faucon, and then turn left again to reach Les Cornes de Dolan. Head down the stony trail to your left that will lead you to Grange des Plans, and continue right on the winding and steep path to Bois sous Faucon. (Possibility of taking a 1-km round trip to the Les Plans beach on the edge of the Vouglans lake.)Continue on the path to your left until you reach the EAST VOUGLANS DAM (BARRAGE DE VOUGLANS EST) and then take the road to the village of VOUGLANS. Head down “rue de Framboise” and then follow the D 299 for 50 m. Turn left onto “rue le Bourdia” to reach Le Bourdia. Continue your journey towards CHANCIA through La Planche on a long stony path bordered by fields before a stretch in the shade along the Ain river until you reach Sur l’Antenne and later Sur Valière, before arriving at Sur la Cize, at the entrance to Chancia.Take “Chemin de Nezan” to your left, which ascends sharply with two large bends and heads past Vers la Serra, A la Serra, and will take you to BELEVEDERE AU CHANAIS. The stony path heads up to the Source Saumur before heading through pastures to the hamlet of NEZAN. Take the tarmac road up towards MONTCUSEL. Continue past the summit and take the narrow (single) stony path to your left 50 meters further on to head back down to your point of departure. 

Starting in Avignon-les-Saint-Claude, after a short ascent bordered by dry grasslands, take a hike in a beautiful forest atmosphere, marked by the Belvedere of Ponthoux and several viewpoints. From AVIGNON-LES-SAINT-CLAUDE, the trail ascends (yellow waymarking) to the right of the chapel via a road (serving an allotment) and then an old path that follows along the fall line (bordered by ash trees and later by boxwood and junipers). Leave the road to your right and continue in the same direction. Exit onto a new road (limestone slab outcrops, characteristic of dry grasslands); follow this road for 200 m to the left until you come to a left bend (forest environment). The forest path ascends to the right into a clearing, which alternates between mud and stone, until it comes to a flat area. The trail branches off to the right, northwards, to reach the clearing of the Grande Combe. Head left on a narrower trail (old open environments followed by a beautiful high forest dominated by beech trees). The path heads west and reaches the BELVEDERE OF PONTHOUX after a few descents. The belvedere can be reached within a few minutes. Head back the way you came and continue on a narrow trail to your right, then take a pleasant stone path to reach la Bataille. Turn left and follow a path for 100 m. Take a narrower trail to your left, which often cuts into the stone. Descend via this trail. Head slightly uphill (reservoir on your left). Take the road to the electrical tower and follow it to the right to head back to the village and the parking lot where you started.

At the foot of long wooded cliffs, where herds of chamois like to hide, the two romantic lakes of Étival can be found, remnants of the glaciers that used to cover and plane the Jura during the Quaternary. From ETIVAL – THE LAKES, follow the road (yellow waymarking) that cuts between the two Lakes to reach The top of the Lakes. Continue to the right, heading past and along the Great Lake (peat bogs south of the lake) to join up with a forest path at the A Tout Fromant crossroads. To the left, the forest path will lead you to the Chemin du Calvaire (waterfalls). Then climb up the path to your left, that leads to the ridge at La Sea.  The path continues along the wooded ridge to the left, from which you can make out the discrete lake of la Fauge to the right in its combe. Head to L’Espinois, on the edge of the forest road. Head back up the ridge to the left and follow the gravel trail. Using this trail, join up with the road (a steep descent on a narrow trail through the trees) and reach the BELVEDERE OF THE ETIVAL LAKES. Follow the forest path to the north, leading to Sur les Lacs. Continuing in the same direction, gradually head down through the forest (the path is muddy in some areas) to reach the D 308 in Champs Gadout. Take the road to the left for 200 m, then branch off to the left and follow along the forest edge (wet path) before following along the bank of the small Etival lake and returning to your starting point.

Hiking around this lake is the Grande Randonnée de Pays of 82km, do able over 2 – 4 days on foot and it will enable you to discover all the attractions of this magnificent huge lake: the giant potholes in Pont de Poitte, the bridge of la Pyle, the dam wall, the beaches of Surchauffant, Bellecin and la Mercantine, etc. It is also possible to do this circuit by mountain bike.

La Forestière is a UCI MTB, Cyclo, Kids and Enduro event. It attracts over 3,500 participants, and its reputation attracts the world's best riders as well as mountain bikers from all over France and abroad. This "model factory" made available workshops to workers in which they benifited from energy needs to their production in celluloÏd. The building trade had, at this time, innovator architecture and conception. The Great Steam, classified as Ancient Memorial since 1987 and certified heritage from the 20th century, was built in 1905 on the Auguste Chanard architect's plans. This is a model factory with innovatory architecture for the work of celluloid, plastic particularly inflammable. The building trade, a V open-shaped, is composed of two wings divided in two floors of partitioned studios which were rented to craftsmen. Each studio worked on electricity(thanks to hydroelectric energy) and had got fire-fighting system from outside : The Sprinklage system. Work surface was ringed by irrigation channel in which the craftsman threw out caught fire objects. The Great Steam was for his sleeping partner - The Electric Union (private society) a display which should serve the conquest of electric energy's distribution's market in several departments. It was exploited until 1967.

The center offers courses and activities according to the season: discovery class, snow class, multi-activities. The residence offers free rental of all or part of the premises, which include a professional kitchen, 2 catering rooms, an 80 m2 multi-purpose room, and four adaptable classrooms/activity rooms for educational stays in line with the teacher's/educator's/coach's pedagogical project. The Monts Jura offers the ideal altitude for hiking between 900 and 1723 m. There are marked and maintained trails waiting for you. Since Lélex, the gondola lift La Catheline brings you to the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; climbing from 900m to 1450m altitude. When you get there, you are only an hour and a half walk away from the Crêt de la Neige (172 3m), the highest point in the Jura. At Lélex and Crozet, both gondolas are equipped for MTB riding in summer. Both the Catheline and the Fierney allow mountain bikers to go back up easily and quickly in order to better enjoy the descent on both sides of the mountain! Please note: electric mountain bikes are not allowed in the Catheline gondola. It enables snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits easily and enjoy the crests in winter. Toys are testaments to the transition from a domestic economy to a market economy. During the mid-19th century, toys were just one of the many wood-turning products. The toy industry was in full expansion with the development of machinery, energy sources and commercial networks. During the 20th century, while the hand-crafted production method was still widely used, the industrialisation of toys truly started in the period between the wars, particularly with the specialisation and autonomisation of businesses. The toy sector came to reflect the transformation of industrial and commercial rationales: the generalisation of plastic materials, the acceleration of technological innovation, strong marketing growth, etc. 

The transition from a “family” economy to a market economy has led to a nuanced industrial landscape in which workshop farms, crafts buildings, cooperative factories and large modern production sites that are increasingly disconnected from local specificities are all present.

Surrounded by the boxwood and bushes of Bois de la Refrèche, the landscape looks out over the waters of the Vouglans lake.

Built on the Ain, at 130 metres high, the Vouglans dam is the French dam with the 3rd highest storage capacity: it is capable of holding around 600 million cubic metres of water, and with 1600 hectares of water surface, it makes the Vouglans lake one of the largest artificial lakes in France. It took a year and a half to fill with water and it deeply changed the physiognomy of the Ain’s embankments, swallowing up several hamlets as well as the Chartreuse de Vaucluse, the first Carthusian monastery in the Jura (12th century).

“Bimbeloterie” is the French term used to define the trade of all sorts of wood-turned trinkets: spinning tops, cases, taps, jumping rope handles, ornaments, etc. Nearly every home still has a few old specimens once made by parents or grandparents in the family workshop. Space consuming and often of little use, they are full of ancient know-how which makes them so difficult to get rid of.

This 500-meter out-and-back is accessible to mountain bikes and offers a stunning view over the Lac de Chanon and the vast folded Jura all the way to the Jura Mountains, with illustrations and explanations provided by interpretive signposts.

“It spoke with a young and resounding voice, with a Jura accent with wide open vowels, clear like a white loaf in which consonants take a decisive bite. [...] The Vouivre flat on its stomach in a bed of reeds, bathing in the sun with a bare bottom and its ruby dress alongside it, indeed.” This is how Marcel Aymé, an author from Franche-Comté, described the Vouivre in his book of the same name; The Vouivre is usually described like a winged, flamboyant serpent with a garnet as its only eye, a fabulous diamond whose value, beauty and power is equalled only by the lust that it arouses in men. Often associated with desire, the Vouivre is also represented as a half-woman, half-serpent. Legend says that the creature only left its treasure to bask in the calm waters of the humid Jura environments. But beware of still waters... we don’t recommend attempting to steal its garnet!

We don’t know much about this straight “Roman” path. From Villard D’Héria, a village to the south of Moirans-en-Montagne, where the remains of a temple and of a cult and thermal complex can be found in one of the most remarkable Gallo-Roman sites of southern Franche-Comté, since the 2nd century, the main axis of this path runs from the Le Gouillat hamlet in the municipality of Charchilla, to the Sous la Razée hamlet in the municipality of Maisod. From there, a path branches off towards a set of inhabited areas, around and on Mont River, another Gallo-Roman site near Champagnole. A second path crosses over the Ain and joins up with the other North-South roads towards Salins, Besançon or Lons-le-Saunier. This ford was replaced by a bridge during the 13th century, which was often destroyed but always rebuilt up until the Pont de la Pyle which currently bridges the gap over the Vouglans lake.

In 1926, wood turning represented two-thirds of industrial activity in the canton of Moirans. In Martigna in 1930, of 300 inhabitants, 30 were wood turners or farmer/wood-turners (D. Schwint, 1997). Like in Martigna, the small sawmills that used the lake’s spillway to action the paddle wheels were turned into wood-turning workshops as soon as electricity became available.

Classed a historical monument in 1906, this church dates back to the first half of the 11th century. It underwent many changes between the 17th and 20th centuries. A few years ago, the church was also subject to archaeological excavations carried out by a team from the CNRS - the French national centre for scientific research - (S. Bully, 2007), during which Saint-Lupicin’s tomb was discovered inside the current structure. The Romanesque church is said to have been built around the tomb.
