First through beautiful valley, plateau, then back trough wood, dangerous descent

The castle, of which only the ruins survive, probably dates back to the ninth century. Built on a rocky escarpment that dominates the town, it offers the visitor an exceptional view of the town and the Ourthe valley. Recent excavations have uncovered rooms and artefacts from the fifteenth century.The ruins are floodlit in the summer months and during festivals. Don’t miss the ghost of Berthe de La Roche who walks along the battlements and then throws herself into the river below: she appears every evening in July and August (except when it’s raining). A Historical Fair is held in the castle ruins over the first weekend of August.

Located on the Deister plateau, the park countains red deer, wild sheep, pheasant,, wild boar, wolves and farm animals. Accesible by car or via a waymarked footpath (Number 4).This 10-hectare (25-acre) natural park gives you the opportunity to observe the inhabitants of our forests, together with their close relatives on the farm. Along a 1.5-km (about 1 mile) walking trail, in an environment similar to their natural habitat, you will meet a herd of fallow deer, stags, mountain sheep, aurochs, boar with their young, wolves, lynx, foxes, racoons, pheasant, eagle owls⤦ Afterwards, stop and say hello to the familiar animals on our mini-farm, and take the time to enjoy the natural space of the tavern terrace, overlooking the playground. 40 different species of forets are gathered on 15 hectares. This park iis suitable for school outings. It is accessible by foot, by car or by the little tourist train. It has also a resting areaFree admision for everybody. Prams are welcome. Access: join the heart of La Roche-en-Ardenne, then, go towards the wild animals park, towards Houffalize. The hill up to the spot is abrupt. Stop your car in front of the park. The arboretum is on the other side of the road. A simple wooden fence symbolizes the entry.

Situated in the middle of the main trade street of this leading Ardennes tourist town, the church is Neo- gothic, built in 1900. It was damaged in 1945 but has been restored well. Unusually, and worth mentioning, is the permanent background music which hospitably welcomes those who enter the church. Numerous stained glass windows dating from 1980 diffuse warm colours inside. Several statues, paintings and screens are worth seeing, notably the lime wood statues on either side of the choir of the Virgin and Saint Nicholas, the parish patron saint. This is a very cosy single-storey little gîte, very easy of access, located 100m away from the center of the town, at the ground floor of a character house on the banks of the river and at the foot of the feudal castle. It has a very nice view on the valley of the Ourthe, and a wide angling place directly accessible from the gîte. There is a very nice fitted park in the nearby (picnic, swimming, walks with your dog). You have access to the shops, restaurants, tourist and culture attractions and also to the several walks inn the forest without your car (free parking place 100m away from the house).
