Discovering the charms of Waimes, Liege, Liege

The Vennbahn criss-crossing the Eifel region of Germany and the breathtaking landscapes of the High Fens offers yet another thrilling cycling trip. This greenway, rich in history, is an old railway line. At the start of the route, in Weywertz, the slope climbs gently. Shortly after crossing the Warche, you climb the Vennbahn without too much difficulty. In Sourbrodt, you discover the old Prussian-style station. Once upon a time, there was a hustle and bustle of activity here: the various routes brought goods from Germany and those on leave from the military camp of Elsenborn. The signal station, the long platforms and the old wagons give an idea of the importance of this railway junction. The line crosses the heart of the green lungs of Wallonia: the Hautes Fagnes nature reserve! You join Kalterherberg and head towards Montjoie. The two large curves finally bring you to Raeren and its pretty medieval castle.

Soon after the dam, we are on a veritable donkey trail, sometimes feeling like a tightrope walker between slopes and steep inclines. In a gap, the Château de Reinhardstein reveals itself. Perched on its eagle’s nest, it seems to challenge the hikers as you have to get around it via steep paths. Following a succession of hills, the Nez de Napoléon (Napoleon’s Nose) viewpoint finally appears – a jutting rock formation which offers us a stunning vista of the Warche Valley. On the crest, the trail starts to wind and follows the meanders of the relief. The itinerary soon reaches the River Warche. Near the banks of the river, the trail enters a valley which becomes narrower and narrower. The trail now climbs uphill. EXCURSION TO THE REGION OF SAINT REMACLE This "Take the Time" Rally will allow you to discover the historical principality of Stavelot-Malmedy. Here are a few tips: • This 90 km long route features several detours. The route description provides the information you need to reduce or shorten the journey. • This route often follows tiny country roads, so it is sometimes difficult to pass one another. Travelling at a leisurely pace provides an opportunity to admire the scenery and, above all, to travel in complete safety. • Please be careful not to disturb the area's peaceful atmosphere. • No petrol stations are available right along the route. When you arrive at Trois-Ponts, you will find what you need 100 metres from the Clyde distillery. • Take some time to go for a walk around the villages. Between steep rocks and wild rivers, this long and beautiful walk criss-crosses the Warche Valley. “Xhoffraix” protects itself from the environment with a cloak of green in the form of forests and shrubs. From its steep inclines flow waterfalls and streams. Its location is the perfect starting point for hiking routes. At a turn of a bend you will marvel at the magnificent view over the Warche valley. As you reach the river via a steep path, you enter a small canyon that will take you to the foot of beautifully restored Reinhardstein Castle. There’s a small donkey trail that leads to the ridges. At the top, the route begins to wind, hugging the curves of the relief and offering panoramas of the narrow valley. Further on, the trail tumbles to the “Moulin” campsite. The river leading to “Coreu” creek, lifts you to “Xhoffraix”, a dramatic finale to this demanding hike.
