Richard Piriou established his own poultry farm in 2014, on the family farm in Guillerval in the south of Essonne. Son of farmers, this poultry farmer raises bare-necked chickens, farm guineafowls, as well as capons for the end of year celebrations. All are raised in a natural outdoor setting and wander through a grassy path of several dozen hectares. The farmer also cultivates cereals on part of his farm according to a sustainable agriculture. Richard's poultry are fed with wheat and corn from the farm but also with oilseeds and protein crops. Richard Priou sells his products on the markets of Etampes or Auvers-Saint-Georges (every other Saturday morning) and then on the markets of Guillerval or Saint-Cyr-la-Rivière (every other Saturday afternoon). It is also possible to place an order directly with the breeder and collect the poultry from the farm.

Domain of Méréville is assessed as the last example of picturesque garden designed in the late 18th century. It is a remarkable and iconic landscaped park of Anglo-Chinese gardens of the late eighteenth century. It was composed by François-Joseph Bélanger then Hubert Robert on behalf of financier Jean-Joseph de Laborde, wealthy sponsor and great lover of gardens. It belongs to the category of picturesque gardens which mark the rupture with the ideal of regular garden fashionable until that time: composed of an array, articulated around scenes that we discover during the walk and along the water, the landscaped garden is a tribute to an idealized and sublimated nature. The Domain has been owned by the Department Council of Essonne since December 2000 and is the subject of restoration work campaigns. In 2019 it obtained the national label "Jardin Remarquable".

Designed and built by the municipality, located in the former barn of the country guard, the eco-museum aims to recall and present the lifestyles, historical, cultural and natural contexts of a rural village Gâtinais. Presented on 3 floors, the collection allows you to discover a rural village in the French Gâtinais. Agricultural machinery, school equipment, photographs and posters will immerse you in the life and history of Boigneville. The exhibition presents objects, photos, tools, posters of rural life in French Gâtinais since the beginning of the century. On the walls is a large collection of photographs by Fernand Lemon, who accumulated a profusion of clichés on the theme of the daily campaigns. An open book on life in France and more particularly in South-Essonne in the twentieth century.

12th-century church of Saint Hilaire

And if we took a little walk to the borders of Beauce ..... 80 km south of Paris, this small village living on agriculture has been mentioned from the 9th century in registers. Moreover, the origin of the name of the place can be traced to a 9th century Count of Gâtinais, Ipdiacus, or to the word isca, “place where walnut trees are grown”. The Saint-Vincent church, dedicated to the Patron des Vignerons, is typical of this region of Gâtinais. However, it has a square bell tower located to the right of the choir, which is rare. Despite everything, it has a saddleback roof, characteristic of the Gâtinais. However, inside, the architectural layout lets in a lot of light, which sets it apart from other churches in the region. In addition, walks are possible around and in the village. So you will probably notice the dovecote-porch visible from Obsonville Street. Indeed, this portal is that of an old stately home. He is said to have welcomed Charles IX for lunch in 1562, while traveling throughout the kingdom with his mother Catherine de Medici. The porch is now filled in and plastered with lime.

This feudal fortress was built in the late 13th century. This feudal fortress was built in the late 13th century. According to an inscription still visible in 1667, the castle was built for Hugues de Bouville. Farcheville Castle is a lowland fortress, an unusual arrangement for the region. Notably, it includes a large rectangular enclosure surrounded by moats, flanked by towers at the corners whose machicolations are carried by large broken arches between the buttresses. In the middle of one side, the entrance opens into the rectangular courtyard, next to a pavilion dating from the early 17th century. The old stately house was probably in the south-east, which had already become the castle farm in the 18th century. Inside the castle, you will find a stately room, a tithe barn, commons, a dovecote, sheds and stables, a vaulted chapel with decor probably dating from the early 14th century. After some revolutionary destruction, a restoration was undertaken between 1811 and 1840. From 1899, important restorations were carried out on the enclosure.

Etampes Museum owes its reputation to a collection of 19th-century sculptures. Besides the entire works of Elias Robert, since 1875 the museum has exhibited drawings, paintings, archaeological items and historical documents as well as a few fossils.

The church of Oncy was built during the 12th century and possesses a very rich heritage inside and outside that helps us to follow its history throughout ages. The church of Oncy-sur-École was built at the end of the 11th century and at the beginning of the 12th century, at the same time as the priory. It is mostly of Roman style, which is not very common in the Gâtinais. Its bell tower is standing on a wider span, which is quite rare too. The nave is newer and was built during the 15th century. The beautiful portal made of wood was also built at this time. The Renaissance style lock is still in perfect condition and can still be used. During some recent restorations, different old foundations were found. The bell tower is quite simple and two-sloped. The shape of the church is very original as the bell tower is way narrower than the span. On the South facade of the church, the traces of an old door can be seen. Inside, the traces of the now disappeared frame are clearly visible. This old door from the 11th century was opened once again during some works in 1965. During the restoration of the church in 2015, on the North side of it, some traces of an old dead’s portal was found. Indeed, between the 12th and 18th centuries, coffins had to leave the church by another door than the living. The church of Oncy has two litera funeris, one is red and the other is black. It is quite rare to see some in churches. In the past, those litera funeris were colourful lines painted in order to honour some important persons’ death inside of churches. The big painting in the apse was restored in 1965 and is a representation of Jesus surrounded by some symbols of the evangelists. The majority of the furniture is from the 17th century. Two statues are from the 13th century : Virgin Mary with Jesus and Sainte Anne which are both classified as part of the Monuments Historiques, like a painting of Saint-Sébastien and Sainte-Julienne. Two tombstones can be seen inside the church, one of them is supposed to be the grave of the legendary Father Soubise who created a French organization for craftsmen. The church of Oncy is dedicated to Saint-Martin de Tours (Saint Martin) also known under the name of Martin le Miséricordieux. He was from Szombathely (also known as Savaria during the Roman Empire) in Hungary and he is one of the most famous and prayed saints in the whole world. He is one of the secondary patron saints in France. He was born in a military family and despite his wish to be religious, Martin became a military. The most famous part of his legend is when one night, as a legionnaire near Amiens, he tore up his coat to give half of it to a frozen poor man. As a person who was part of the army, he was not allowed to become an ecclesiastical. However, the people of Tours wanted him as their bishop so they kidnapped him and named him as bishop without his consent. He founded several abbeys and parishes all along the Loire Valley. He died of old age near Tours and was buried at the place of the basilica Saint-Martin de Tours. A recreation of his sarcophagus can be seen in the crypt. This famous place of pilgrimage celebrates the memory of Saint Mathurin, who was born here in the third century. His family was pagan, but when he converted to Christianity he instructed his parents and soon gained a great reputation of great saintliness. At that time it was rumoured that the Roman Emperor’s daughter Theodora was possessed of a devil that declared it would only leave her if Saint Mathurin intervened. The Saint was therefore ordered to go to Rome, where he healed the Emperor’s daughter but then died. His body was brought back and laid in a chapel at Larchant, where it was venerated by many visitors. Saint Mathurin was invoked for healing of the mad, and this pilgrimage became one of the most famous in France in the Middle Ages, especially as it was also on the road to Santiago de Compostela. Six kings of France made the pilgrimage to Larchant: Charles IV, Louis XI, Charles VIII, François I twice, Henri II and Henri III. Today’s pilgrimage takes place every year at Whitsuntide. The church as it is today was built from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries. It had barely been completed when an extraordinary series of catastrophes befell it. It burned twice, struck by lightning in 1490 and again in 1568 during the Wars of Religion. Pillaging and hurricanes added to the list of its miseries, the ultimate disaster being the collapse of the tower in 1675. The Last Judgement door, with its vivid imagery dating from the thirteenth century, gives access to the ruined part of the nave. Access today is by the south door of the transept. Only the choir, the apse and the chapel of the Virgin have kept their roof vaults. The two levels of windows in the apse give it a harmony accentuated by the slim columns set out from the walls. The luminosity of this huge vessel as it must have been when the 46 windows lit it can easily be imagined.

The house was turned into a museum that showcases some rooms as they used to be when Jean Cocteau lived there. The visitors can dive into the mythological and baroque universe of the famous poet. Guided tour only In 1947, Jean Cocteau decided to settle down in Milly-la-Forêt with his boyfriend at the time, the very famous actor Jean Marais. He bought this old house which used to belong to the Château de la Bonde, the castle where once lived the admiral of Graville during the 15th century. He spent 17 years of his life in Milly until his death in 1963 with his boyfriend Edouard Dermit (also known as Doudou). Edouard Dermit took care of the house until his own death in 1995. The museum lets us dive into the mythological and baroque universe of Jean Cocteau throughout the furnised and decorated rooms. You can also have a walk in the bucolic garden surrounded by the irrigation canals and moats from the castle Château de la Bonde. All along the visit, you will discover some photographs of Cocteau's life but also some of his work such as drawings or written notes. The house of Cocteau now belongs to the Conseil Régional as part of a donation the 11th of September 2019. It was classified as a "Maison des Illustres" by the Ministry of Culture. It is important to preserve this house and better know this artist from the 20th century with his rich and special work that brought a lot to the French culture.
