Domain of Méréville is assessed as the last example of picturesque garden designed in the late 18th century.
It is a remarkable and iconic landscaped park of Anglo-Chinese gardens of the late eighteenth century. It was composed by François-Joseph Bélanger then Hubert Robert on behalf of financier Jean-Joseph de Laborde, wealthy sponsor and great lover of gardens.
It belongs to the category of picturesque gardens which mark the rupture with the ideal of regular garden fashionable until that time: composed of an array, articulated around scenes that we discover during the walk and along the water, the landscaped garden is a tribute to an idealized and sublimated nature.
The Domain has been owned by the Department Council of Essonne since December 2000 and is the subject of restoration work campaigns. In 2019 it obtained the national label "Jardin Remarquable".
Free entry. Guided tours rates: full price € 7, reduced price € 3.50 (students, teachers, unemployed and seniors). Free for children under 12 and members of local history associations. Bikes are not allowed in the Domain.
