This pleasant walk goes around the lake of Orthez-Biron. With family or friends, you can discover the typical fauna and flora of this environment and take advantage of the facilities (observation posts, playgrounds, fitness modules, beach, pedal boats...).

The Biron-Orthez leisure park is a shady park for picnics and children?s games; it?s a beautiful, safe and mostly flat walk around the lake; it?s a place to observe aquatic birds and a fishing zone; it?s, in season, a well-equipped sandy beach and a renowned water-skiing base.

This stage promises great surprises, with the discovery of the Béarn nature, a beautiful mix of forest and agricultural areas, the passage to Sauvelade Abbey and the crossing of the bastioned city of Navarrenx.

This stage ensures the junction between the Gave de Pau and the Gave d'Oloron, but also between the old town of Orthez and the historical "sauveté" that is Sauveterre-de-Béarn, with its remarkable concentration of heritage treasures. Undulating from one hill to another, the route also crosses the Orion Hospital, on land that has been used for centuries to welcome pilgrims.

Linking the two capitals of Béarn, Orthez the old, to Pau the new, by bike, might seem audacious in view of the mileage; but this ride turns out to be a beautiful stroll through the valley of the Gave de Pau. The variety of the landscapes encountered and the good cyclability of the itinerary make that the cities and villages stages go by one by one without any hitch. We start by visiting the rural Béarn up to Mourenx, from the lakes of the Biron barthes to the peaceful valley of the Geu, then it is time to stroll along the banks of the Gave de Pau. From Tarsacq to Laroin, a comfortable greenway allows you to walk along the river that has just come down from the mountains, giving you the opportunity to appreciate its specific environments and its aquatic birdlife. One enters the city of Pau without almost ever having to face the traffic.

This pleasant walk, marked out with interpretation desks, allows you to discover the main historical monuments of the medieval town of Orthez: the Hôtel de la Lune, the Pont Vieux, the Maison Jeanne d'Albret, the Church of Saint Pierre, the Château Moncade. In the Middle Ages, Béarn was at the heart of all the events that marked this period: the pilgrimage, the crusades, the creation of bastides... And Orthez is the capital! The Béarnaise dynasty of the Foix Béarn family (Fébus) dreamed then of a free country going from Orthez to Foix. Later it was Jeanne d'Albret, mother of Henri IV, who gave Béarn Calvinism as the state religion. This walk also offers a variety of bucolic atmospheres: the banks of the Gave, the Moncade vineyard which offers a view of the town, the Coudane wood and its arboretum, and the Grecq lake, a space dedicated to biodiversity.

This interpretive trail is a peaceful and charming island, completely isolated from the large Lacq industrial complex. To discover Lendresse, simply follow the 16 signs around the town hall and along the footpath, which is also a fitness trail. The path along the banks of the Gave de Pau is fragile and exposed to flooding. It's still rustic, with gravel in places, but it's wide, well-marked, made of hard earth and level.

A hilly itinerary between hillsides to enjoy the panoramas, and wild valleys to appreciate the freshness of the undergrowth, and listen to the rustle of the streams.

A hike around Arthez-de-Béarn between plains and hillsides, sometimes in the forest or in the middle of crops, to discover three charming chapels: The chapel of Caubin, the chapel of Cagnes and the chapel N'Haux.

This stage of the Way of Saint James is marked by the long descent of the hill of Arthez and the crossing of the Gave de Pau, a sign that the Pyrenees are getting closer.

In the hills of Loubieng, a small Béarnaise village close to Orthez, the birthplace of Gaston Fébus, Rose, a farmer and Philippe, a beekeeper, welcome visitors to the farm and are happy to talk about their professions. There’s a range of specialty products which are available to both try and purchase, honey, fresh pollen, speciality cakes - all made from the produce of the hives. Visitors can also learn about pollen providing flora and other environmental issues from video montages.

In the heart of the Béarn countryside, Loubieng is a small Béarn village close to Sauvelade and its abbey, on the road to Compostela. Labelled "Agriculture bio" the farm "Bien aimée" breeds "Blonde d'Aquitaine" cattle. Calves and steers are exclusively fed grass in spring and summer, hay and haylage in autumn and winter and are complemented by a production of 3 ha of corn and 2 ha of alfalfa for fattening. On holiday, enjoy quality meat with the taste of Bearn. You can even leave with parcels.

In Biron, a village near Orthez, home of Gaston Phoebus. The Lac des Barthes is close to the Base de Loisirs de Biron, another developed lake. A real fishing center awaits you! With a total water surface area of 22 ha, this site comprises 3 lakes: - An 8-hectare carnadrôme (home to black bass and zander) where float tube fishing is authorized. This lake is in ?reserve? for 2010. - A 3 ha carpodrôme. No-kill/take-and-release course. - An 11-hectare all-techniques lake (carnivorous fish and whitefish), with access for people with reduced mobility via a path and two platforms (tourism and handicap label pending). The site was built on a former gravel pit, with water drawn from the water table.

Located in the communes of Orthez, Biron and Castétis, the Leisure Center includes a large shaded park with a 40-hectare lake in its center, bordered by a fine sand beach. The 3.6 km tour of the lake is punctuated with 3 bird watching stations. In free access, the leisure center offers a multitude of activities, playgrounds for children, a multi-sports field, a fitness area, a Zen garden, a reading area, a fishing corner, petanque courts, ping-pong tables and picnic tables. In the summer, a swimming area with the handiplage label is supervised. Other activities can be practiced such as pedal boat, paddle, water skiing, or archery, some of them are on reservation.

The recreation base at Lake Biorn is accessible all year round. Numerous activities are offered to you: swimming area, orientation course, playgrounds, picnic areas, fishing, aquatic activities...

At the entrance to the town of Orthez, the city of Gaston fébus, lake fitted out in a leisure centre. A set of more than 100 hectares around the 40 ha lake. Supervised swimming in season, fine sand beach, water skiing. Tennis and volleyball courts, ping-pong table and sports course around the lake (3600 m). Fishing, bird watching, walks. In Castétis, a village on the road to Orthez, the Moulin de Candau is a 16th century water mill belonging to the former château de Candau. It crossed the centuries crushing wheat for the local population until 1958. 50 years later, it has been completely restored and is grinding wheat again. A micro power station has been integrated and provides clean energy to the mill. In addition, there is a museum of old mill tools on site. A hydraulic sawmill is being restored. The mill participates in the protection of the biodiversity of the river by maintaining it.

A few meters from the stadium, at the foot of the tower, 2 picnic tables have been set up.

La Boucherie also showcases local producers with an extensive wine list and a focus on short distribution channels.

The pleasant setting of the "Le Louisabella" restaurant in Biron is ideal for relaxation and conviviality. The terrace overlooking the lake offers a panoramic view to enjoy a beautiful sunset while savoring your meal. The interior of the restaurant, decorated with wood and plants, creates a warm, authentic atmosphere. You'll be able to enjoy a variety of tapas that will delight your taste buds (frogs' legs, squid in parsley sauce, fried smelts...) accompanied by exotic and refreshing cocktails. Whether you're a fan of seafood, fish or meat, the menu offers a diverse selection to suit all tastes (pike-perch goujonnette with beurre blanc, hake steak/coconut cream, island-flavored chicken fricassee...), but you can also choose the lunchtime menu. Our dinners are regularly enlivened by live music and dancing.

In Orthez on the departmental road to Pau, the ‘La Soupière’ restaurant in the Kyriad hotel, provides traditional fare, featuring regional recipes as well as a variety of set menus in a pleasant family environment. First courses and desserts are served from the buffet where you can choose from a selection of starters, cheeses and desserts.

The chef offers a small menu of fresh produce. The indispensables: velouté of vegetables, marinated salmon, oysters, tapas, cold meats, baby squid, peppers, fish straight from the fish auctions, andouillettes, Occitan lamb. Desserts are home-made Dance evenings and sporting events on screen throughout the year. And all in a very trendy atmosphere whilst keeping its original art deco look.

In Sauvelade a small Béarnais village on the Puy pilgrim route to Compostella. This bistro is close to the cistercian abbey. Jeff and Lili have opened this small bistro in a traditional Béarnais building offering overnight accommodation, gite d'étape. The food is home-made and regional: mushroom omelettes in season, garden produce, tapas, cold meats, local cheeses and salads. For pilgrims who are in a hurry to get back on the road there is a "fast" menu with a snack which you can eat in or take away. All produce is organic, locally grown or from equitable commerce and the fruit juices are made with fruit straight from the orchard.

Close to the station in Orthez and in the old town, on the departmental road to Pau, the restaurant in the Terminus hotel provides traditional, family style cooking. The Maison Christian, a beautiful 18th century property is close by. The house was inhabited by the poet Francis Jammes and houses an exhibition of his life and works.

In a beautiful fully glazed dining room giving onto the place d'Armesis this brasserie of the same name which is a real local institution run by Céline who's kept the family flame going. Here the menu changes with the season, a good part is made in the family kitchen; seasonal salads, red meats, fresh fish and pork all the fundamentals that you find every lunchtime.

The Corral Café is in the historic centre of the ‘Cité de Fébus’ district in Orthez and in front of the ‘Place d’Armes’ square. It has been entirely renovated and the first floor dining room with its tasteful contemporary decor has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Kevin provides traditional food featuring regional specialities. These include hake in chorizo butter or salmon grilled on the plancha with pesto, duck confit and foie gras served with homemade brioche.

The restaurant is on the edge of the small village of Arganon, close to Orthez and is housed in a charming former barn. La Bulle has ‘Maître restaurateur’ (‘Master restaurateur’) status. This is awarded to restaurants meeting specific criteria: fresh produce, onsite cooking, quality service and stringent hygiene standards. Hélène, the chef provides homemade food made from fresh produce. The restaurant specialises in Basque and Béarnaise dishes such as Basque style lamb sweetbreads, garbure (Béarnaise soup) and leg of lamb with porcini mushrooms. Why not try the ‘Heart of Béarn Platter’ - a medallion of semi-cooked foie gras, duck or beef skewer, served with potatoes, a green salad, local cheese and a glass of red or rosé wine.

In Loubieng, 10 minutes from Orthez, close to Pau and Biarritz, Domaine de Tilh welcomes you to an 18th century manor house in the heart of 40 hectares of parkland.
