A sporty hike in the heart of the Mercantour Park, the summit of Mangiabo offers a splendid 360° panorama over the high peaks of the Eastern Mercantour, the border summits, and the sea from San Remo to the Cap d'Antibes and the Estérel massif to the southwest. The itinerary is entirely in the heart of the Mercantour park, and is subject to its regulations. 1) Coming from Breil, take the 1st track on the right, just after the Brouis pass (879 m), ball. 124. Continue straight on, and park at the level of the old barracks and blockhouses. 2) Bal. 125, start the ascent to the Baisse de Levens (1093 m), bal. 139. 3) Turn right at the drop, the route follows the rising ridge line. 4) In large, steeply sloping pastures, the path bends to the right, and crosses crosses the slope to reach the next ridge line. Then, with Then, with a few big laces, join the ridge at marker 144 (1777 m). 5) Another 5 minutes on the ridge to reach the summit (1821 m), marked by a large cairn. 6) Return by the same route. NB: it is possible to reach the summit of Mangiabo from Sospel by the GR 52, and from Moulinet.

Beautiful hike starting from the Col de Brouis between Breil sur Roya and Sospel.

Superb ridge walk on a track, technically easy and short. Arrival at the top of Mount Grazian, breathtaking 360° view of the sea to the south and the eastern end of the Mercantour with Mount Bego and the Marguareis massif to the extreme north-east. Park at the Col de Brouis, altitude 879 m, located between Sospel and Breil-sur-Roya on the RD 2204. The view is already magnificent, with the village of Saorge clinging to the steep slopes opposite you on the north side. You can also choose to cycle to the Col de Brouis from Breil on the RD 2204, or on the GR 52A, or from Sospel. Marker 124. Take the track that leaves on the north side to the left of the inn. It will pass quickly to the south. Continue straight ahead (do not take the track that goes left towards the antennas and the cime du Bosc). You follow the GR52 A route up to the marker 119 at the Col de Paula. There, the GR will go down on the right by a path, You take the right track. (The track on the left leads to the very pretty perched hamlet of Piene-Haute: on the way back you can choose to make a detour to visit this eagle's nest, its churches and chapel and its castle, and enjoy the breathtaking view). Along the way you will see some old border markers. A few hairpin bends and you are at the top of Mount Grazian, which dominates Sospel and its fields, nothing stopping your vision, Mount Grazian being an isolated summit. Return by the same route. Remember to take water, the route is in full sun. Avoid the hottest hours of the day in midsummer; in summer, early mornings or evenings are best.

Medium hike, often in undergrowth, with a section on the road at the start.

Walk through the small country roads and olive trees a few minutes from the village. Cross the Lac de Breil by the Charabot Bridge, pass under the viaduct of the railway line (tag 7), take the stairs to the right and continue to the fountain. Take the stairs behind the fountain then join the road for about 500m. Arrival at the Notre Dame du Mont chapel where you can picnic in the shade of olive trees. Retrace your steps to a small road on the right, route de Ciaus, descend to the fountain then return to the village. Possibility of continuing straight on passing in front of the fountain up to the Saint Antoine de Padoue chapel, you will also see the Saint Jean bell tower just behind. And continue on the road to the transport ecomuseum and the sncf station.

This easy route, most of it on tracks or tarmac roads, invites you to take a stroll through the olive grove of Breilloise, the largest in the Alpes-Maritimes. Along the way, you'll discover some of the oldest Romanesque buildings in the 06. At the beginning of the 20th century, Breil had some 450 hectares of olive groves and 6 mills, producing a total of 3,600 hectolitres of olive oil. Today, the commune still boasts some of the finest olive groves in the department. On this itinerary through the Lavina valley, you can also discover some of the oldest Romanesque monuments in the Alpes-Maritimes, such as the Saint-Jean bell tower, Notre-Dame-du-Mont and the Madone-des-Grâces chapel. ROUTE : From Breil-sur-Roya (290 m), cross the lake by the first bridge facing the church and climb up to pass under the railway bridge (b.7). Immediately fork right for a short climb and continue straight on to reach the Saint- Antoine chapel, not far from the Saint-Jean bell tower. Just after the chapel, take the small road furthest to the left and climb up to Notre-Dame-du-Mont (400 m) via marker 8a. Continue through the olive grove and, after a hairpin bend, follow a path alternating slight climbs and descents to reach the Col de Brouis road (RD 2204), which you take on the left. Follow this road for around 2 km until you reach the Pont de la Pinéa (556 m - b.131). Descend to the left along the Pinéa-Morgella track (b.132) and reach the Madone-des-Grâces chapel (490 m - b.126). Continue along this route towards the lake and the village of Breil-sur-Roya via the small road leading to the Lavina quarter (b.120).

Magnificent sporty hike with a breathtaking view of the Roya valley where you will see the main peaks of the Mercantour... From the tourist office, go up the village to the upper bridge (b.5). Continue flat and along the Roya (b.9), Go up in switchbacks to the beacon 10, continue on the GR52 and soon cross the valley of Zouayné (b.108). Go up this one, very deep and obscure. In a bend, leave the valley on the right to reach the collar of Aïné by a wooded crossing. The path follows the ridge, then crosses rocky bars and passes on the southern slope (b.109). Reach the top of the Arpette in a few minutes (TV relay). Panorama break on the peaks. Return to the beacon 109, follow the path which follows the crest and join a track which comes from Italy. Leave this track on the left, continue to follow the ridge, be careful, the path is not always visible. Project yourself towards the Tête d'Alpe summit nipple. At Tête d'Alpe, a magnificent view of the Arpette and also the distance covered. Always walk on the ridge, pass the 438 marker and reach an intersection. The trail now abandons the ridge. Pass under the Cime de Crémo, begin the descent towards the Pas du Sausson and reach an intersection. Take the path on the right towards Roche du Tron, you will see the hamlet of Libre 75m below. Take the long descent to marker 417 and reach the heart of the hamlet of Libre. Continue to the place called Bourgogni (tag 415 then 416) and follow the valley path to the tag 106 'Rougna). Follow the Carleva path which descends to the 105 beacon. Just a few more metres and you are back in Breil-sur-Roya.

A steep and sporty route, ideal for exercising your calves! Magnificent views when you join the GR52A which takes you back towards the village of Breil, then a breathtaking panorama from the Cruella tower. Don't forget to take water! Start from the Place Biancheri in front of the tourist office, at 284 m altitude, to climb to the medieval watchtower La Cruella, which dominates the entire Breil basin, at 535 m altitude. Go up the Roya on the left bank and take the path towards the Zouainé valley and Saorge at marker 6: it starts just before the Pont Supérieur and runs along the Roya. Follow it to marker 9. At the junction with the track, take it to the right and climb up. Pass a hairpin bend and turn right onto a path marked with a wooden sign: "Itinéraire pédestre". It climbs steeply upwards until it meets the GR52A at marker 10. You will take it on your right as you descend towards the village of Breil. You leave the GR and climb to the left to reach the Cruella tower after a few hairpin bends. Breathtaking and sometimes vertiginous views on the GR section, then from the Cruella tower. A compulsory aerial break. From the tower, head south on the slope of the next valley, along the Irish path marked in yellow in the restanques planted with olive trees. You will join the valley path that you will follow on your right, overlooking the Roya. You will arrive at the southern entrance of the old village of Breil, pass under the Genoa gate, and in the shadow of the pretty chapel of Saint-Antoine l'Ermite, and in the oldest part of the village, Place Rousse, to return to your starting point either by Rue Pasteur and Rue Sainte-Catherine, or by walking along the Roya.

A very beautiful and long circuit: you go up by the small road on the right bank of the northern slope of the Maglia, then by the laces of the Bois Noir track to the limits of the Mercantour park. Once you have passed the Agnon pass, you go back down to the south side. From the Place Biancheri in front of the tourist office, cross the Lac aux Cygnes on the Charabot bridge. Go straight up under the small railway tunnel. After the tunnel, go up to the right. You will pass the Saint-Antoine de Padoue chapel on your left. You can take the road to Ciaus on your left, or continue to take the next road, the small road to Madonna du Mont. Take a break at the beautiful chapel surrounded by olive trees. Continue to climb until you reach the RD 2204. Turn left, and you will take the small road of La Maglia very quickly on your right. You will never leave it. Stop from time to time to contemplate the gorges that it overlooks. You will pass a small tunnel, as well as the hiking sign on your left for the Morghé valley n°100. Continue on. Pass the car park and the marker n°145 which indicates on the right the descent to the Maglia canyon. At marker 101, you leave the goudront to take the wide Bois Noir trail on your left. At marker 103 you leave the Conffrey track on your right and continue to climb on the same track. You reach the limits of the Mercantour National Park, marker 140. The track continues eastwards, following the boundaries of the Park. At marker 135 on your left, a path joins the Agnon pass (1074 m), which the trail skirts. You then begin the long descent southwards via Campé. The views of the Haute-Roya mountains, Saorge and Breil below are breathtaking and plunging: don't hesitate to stop! You will pass a sheepfold, and shortly afterwards a DFCI tank on your left. You continue to wind down the "chemin du col d'Agnon" in the "Bourgemo district", where you come across some beautiful olive groves. Turn LEFT onto the Bourgemo path to pass through the "Granile district", which allows you to avoid the road and still enjoy magnificent views of the village of Saorge. After a few twists and turns, you will reach the beginning of the small road of La Maglia, and you can reach your starting point more quickly by descending directly by the small road of Burdanche which descends steeply to the right at the beginning of the road of Notre-Dame-du-Mont.

Beautiful hike from Breil by the GR510 to Sospel via Piedne Haute. Then take the GR52 to Menton. Please note the Sospel-Menton part is very difficult and is intended for an informed public. Breil sur Roya - Piedne Haute by the GR510 Duration: 5h Elevation: + 590m - 279m The start of the trail is at the southern entrance to the city, on the left, just before the bridge over the Roya (tag 1). Continue to beacon 2, follow the path through Camp Saorgin and arrive at beacon 118. At this junction continue to follow the GR510 through the place called Bancao. Arrive at marker 117. The path completely changes direction to go up towards the North-North-West via Viravourgio and traverse the depths of the Riou valley while the goal to be reached near the hamlet of Piedne Haute looms in the south at 1,5km as the crow flies. A track soon replaces the trail. After crossing the hamlet of Mattegna, the path meets an oratory and reaches a pass dominated by the chapel of the Madonna. Continue to the hamlet of Piedne Haute. Piedne Haute - Sospel via the GR510 Duration: 3h Departure from Piedne haute by the D 193 westward then descend by a stony path via the GR 510 (tag 440). After the Saint Jérôme chapel, the path narrows along olive groves. Leave the cultivated lands and descend while remaining vaguely on the crest; join the D93 (markers 441 and 442) about thirty meters from the Italian border (possibility of stopping at the cafe restaurant of San Michele), Follow the road for 300 m and take a descending steep path that avoids a bend. Another 100 m of tar, then take on the right (tag 443) a path which runs along a ledge above the Bévéra and which is equipped with a botanical path through the town of Sospel. We soon reach the Caï bridge over which the Nice-Cuneo railway line passes. Go under the bridge, cross the valley of Basséra and go up to the other end of the Pont de Caï. From the bridge take a dirt road that climbs to the right and merge onto the D93 which you take until you reach the bridge over the Nieya stream where you enter a shaded path that avoids a wide bend in the road. This path then heads towards the Saint Gervais farm, where it crosses the buildings while widening. It continues in the form of a dirt road which is suitable for motor vehicles and becomes tarry when approaching the D 2204. Take this road until Sospel. Sospel - Menton Duration: 7h Elevation: +1150 -1480 From Sospel (350 m - b.105), take the old road to the Col de Castillon (D.2566). Cross the railway line and just after the first bend, take the small Fontan road on the left (b.106). Continue on the track before taking the GR (b.106a) on the right. In the first bend on the right, follow the start of a track to join the path which climbs (b.107) before exiting on the croup (fountain - b.107a). Join the Col du Razet (1,032 m - b.90) by climbing through the undergrowth; continue on the GR52, to reach Colla Bassa (1,108 m - b.95) and take the track to the right which descends in a southerly direction. Fork further down to the right on a path (GR) to reach the place called Mourga (b.95c). Continue until you reach a track (b.406) that you have to follow downhill to the right to take the path that goes to the left (b.407). Last climb (b.408) to the tall pines that mark the passage of the Col du Berceau (1,090 m - b.12a). The descent on the southern slope is steep, stony and technical. The slope softens when it reaches the forest (716 m), a crossroads of routes (b.410) where you have to continue towards the Plan du Lion, leaving the GR51 to the right. At the end of the plateau (b.412), take the path (GR52) to a track in the St-Paul district (446 m - b.413). Continue by the track opposite then by the path to the left which descends to the side (markers 424 and 423) until the gates of Menton. Go along the motorway to the right, then pass under it until markers 422 and 421 continue to arrive at Boulevard de Garavan (b.420).

Fortification part of the Maginot line. It is a small artillery work that aimed to prohibit the Brouis pass connecting the Roya valley to the north and the Bévéra valley to the south. Built close to the Col de Brouis fort, these barracks housed the troops responsible for the artillery and operation of this structure, as well as soldiers from the outposts at cime du Bosc and Cougoule. During the fighting for the liberation of Breil-sur-Roya in April 1945, the Germans dug in and inflicted heavy losses on the Free French of the 1st DFL. Severely damaged by shells and bombs, the fort was abandoned to the army.

Wishing to pay homage to the men of the 1st DFL who died to liberate the region (cf. Fort du Col de Brouis), the municipality of Breil sur Roya erected a monument on the Col de Brouis.

Located along the old Savoyard salt road, the Notre-Dame des Grâces chapel is halfway between the village and the Brouis pass. As an epidemic of plague ravages Breil-sur Roya, the inhabitants go to implore the Virgin at the sanctuary of Rocaforte de Mondovi. They commit themselves, if the plague ceases, to raise a chapel on the path through which the plague has arrived. Their wish granted, they build this chapel also called Notre Dame des Neiges, and seal a plaque indicating: "Comm. communitas Brelii, tempore pestis 1631, Augt. votum feisset, quod intercessione, ss Marie Virginis, arque Rosalie et Roch, libera fuit", "The community of Breil at the time of the plague of 1631 had made a vow on August 5, because, through the intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, of Saint Rosalie and Saint Roch, she was set free". Several ex-voto and a pair of crutches testify and wishes granted.

Located on a beautiful site of the Breilloise olive grove, the chapel incorporates Romanesque apses, Gothic portals and a Baroque bell tower around its three Romanesque naves with baroque decorations. The attic of the chapel is home to bats in summer, protected by the Natura 2000 programme and the Mercantour National Park. The Madonna of the Mount has a basilical plan with a central nave and two collaterals. Three apses in the cul de four extend the three naves. The structure of the main nave is supported by high walls above the arcades that separate it from the collateral. This nave is illuminated by side bays in the upper part. The collaterals, lower, are covered with "shed" frames. They are illuminated by oculus at the top of each facade. The side bell tower rebuilt in the early seventeenth century, is partly located in the south apsidiol which remains partially legible inside. A semicircular vaulted porch was built west of the central nave in the early 17th century. It was raised by the creation of a small dwelling around 1830. A masonry cistern of the same period adjoins it to the north. A semi-elliptical forecourt is located at the front of the side gate, north of the building.

This bell tower with its twin openings, very characteristic of the first Romanesque art, is the only surviving vestige of the ancient priory Sanctis Johannes. It is not visited but is visible from the road. The chapel and annexes were destroyed in 1707 by the army of Prince Eugene retreating after their defeat before Toulon. Philippe de Beauchamp says "early 12th-century bell tower, vestige of a Benedictine church still in use in 1667, destroyed in 1707 by the Imperials, set in a beautiful site". According to Charles Botton, the chapel was destroyed in 1707. Gave its name to the Saint Jean district Tegulae incorporated into the bell tower Ancient tombs found in the district.

The large dimensions of this elegant station make it possible to accommodate the staff needed to operate a line whose traffic is shared between SNCF and Trenitalia.

Archaeological discoveries prove that the site of Breil sur Roya is inhabited since the Neolithic era.

Access via the Crottés trail which overlooks the roofs of the village. These small vaulted shelters, typical of the region, are after the Sardinian restoration, when the Republic of Genoa is attached to the Kingdom of Savoy-Sardinia. No longer threatening his southern flank, the sovereign abandoned the castle of Ar Casté which then served as a stone quarry for the people of the country. Some build these Crottés into shelters in which they store clays during the night on which they dry figs and plums.

Sacha Sosno designed this monument on the high plateaus of the Ceva in the heart of the Mercantour Park with the remains of the Liberator plane that crashed on the night of 12/9/44. The 11 American airmen were going to parachute weapons to the Italian resistance fighters. On 14 September 1991, a monument was inaugurated on the plateau of La Ceva (Fontan), at an altitude of 1,720 m, commemorating the "crash" of the Liberator "Dallas Lady", which took place on 12 September 1944 four hundred metres above sea level and cost the lives of 11 American airmen. This plane left Algiers to parachute arms and ammunition (18 containers and 6 large packs of one cubic metre) to Italian partisans in the Turin region when, following a navigational error in the rainy night, it crashed into the mountain. The inhabitants of the Berghe hamlets heard explosions for more than forty-eight hours. Eleven concrete steles commemorate the airmen and the central monument, written in both French and English, contains the history of the flight and the names of the victims. The sculptor Sacha Sosno designed the monumental ensemble, incorporating the remains of the aircraft. In agreement with the Mercantour National Park, the town of Fontan has decided to offer the territory occupied by the museum complex to the United States.

Exhibition of old machines (SNCF historic steam and electric locomotives, trams, old cars). Presentation of the history of the SNCF railway line at Col de Tende, including a large model on the line. For several years, the volunteer members of the Breil sur Roya Ecomuseum Association have been gathering rare pieces on the history of transportation in our region. The locomotives, train carriages, railcars, trolleys and old trams are displayed in the open air and in a shed in the immediate vicinity of the station, the tracks and a level crossing. The collections of objects and models are presented inside the old carriages which have been refurbished for this purpose.
