Line shared between SNCF and Trenitalia. company Trenitalia. With its louvered shutters and colorful plasterwork, it features the same neo-Provençal style as all the stations from Nice. Between platforms 2 and 3 are the customs and police rooms. The station is a crossroads for the railroads from Nice to Coni, Turin and Switzerland, as well as the Ventimiglia line. This infrastructure linking the coast to northern Italy was severely damaged by Allied bombing in the summer of 1944. Only the main building was rebuilt in 1947, when the Nice-Breil line was reopened. A small building on the first floor replaced the customs and police building in 1979. DOUBLE TUNNEL HEAD AT CARANCA-GIGNES This double tunnel head was built when the parallel Caranca and Gignes tunnels were excavated. The railroad linking Ventimiglia to Cuneo and Turin passes through the 1189-meter-long Gignes tunnel, while the 916-meter-long Caranca tunnel is crossed by the Breil-Nice line. These tunnel heads were destroyed by the Germans in April 1945. Only the tunnel leading to Nice was cleared in 1947 to re-establish a rail link with this city. The Gignes tunnel was not cleared until 1979, when the Ventimiglia-Coni line was re-established. The tunnel head was then rebuilt identically.
