Discover Barcillonnette: Gem of the Hautes-Alpes

All along this short, hot and wild hike, the path overlooks the Durance valley and its orchards. During the ascent, the Mediterranean vegetation and the remarkable view offer a pleasant surrounding.The  Bec de Crigne is a Natura 2000 site for the particularly rich bird  species gathering at the cliffs (107 birds species). At the end of the small road (which quickly turns into a track) and just after the fruit farm, turn right at the crossroads where the Natura 2000 information panel is located. At the departure, the path runs along the orchards. The path then goes up through the undergrowth and crosses  the river sometimes. This old mule track, carved into the rock is climbing and winding along the face of spectacular cliffs. Several viewpoints of the Durance Valley punctuate the ascent. After a long series of bends, the track turns right under the cliff and pass a breach. Continue on the left in a pleasant undergrowth and arrive under the sheepfold of Basse Crigne (950 m). In the meadow under the sheepfold, the path is almost hidden and branches off to the left (it does not go up towards the sheepfold). Continue a few meters and reach a thalweg. The trail is very pleasant, fairly flat and on a balcony. Continue direction south, through old meadows that the forest is gradually recolonizing. When leaving the forest, reach a track, cross it and take the path almost immediately opposite. The path is wild and climbs parallel to the track (on its left) in the direction of Haute Crigne (please note  carefully the markings). Reach the Haute bergerie de Crigne (1130 m). Go back down by the same route.

The Aujour Mountain Loop, which spans two regions between the Durance and Buëch rivers, offers a 57-kilometer loop through rugged terrain in a still-wild landscape of black marl ravines, crossing the Col d'Espréaux via its northern slope. Starting from Monêtier-Allemont, cross the canal and take the D 942 to Ventavon. At the intersection of the D 942 and D 21, take the D 21 and begin the climb up the Col de Faye (934 m elevation). At the intersection of the D 21 and D 48 in Savournon, take the D 48 to Chabestan. At the D 48/D 49 intersection, follow the D 49 then the D 149 to reach the village of Saint-Auban d’Oze. In Saint-Auban d’Oze, continue on the D 149 and begin the climb up the Col des Verniers (1,035 m). Proceed to Châteauneuf-d’Oze. Take the D 20 to the Col d'Espréaux. Follow this road to the canal road. Follow the canal from Sisteron back to the starting point (Monêtier-Allemont).

An easy and fairly shaded hike, along a tracks and wide paths, which allows you to discover the forest of the Saint-Genis cirque,and to enjoy the freshness of the Riou gorges. From the parking lot, follow the track going left. At the fence, continue straight on until the Pas de Jubéo. Follow the wide forest track which descends regularly, passing all the paths on the left. On the opposite slope, the track climbs slightly then descends, still in the shade. Turn right onto a small path ("Route Forestière du Château"), descend for 100 m to an intersection ("Saume Longe"). Follow the path on the right and descend into the Riou gorges. A bridge allows you to reach the other bank and, through a beautiful forest of Austrian black pines, go up to the Jubéo forest house, then to the parking lot.

A trail ride through the woods in a mid-mountain setting. This route presents no technical challenges and features a long descent. Head up the main trail to the left. Take the botanical trail to explore the local flora and fauna. At the fork, continue down the trail to the right. At the hairpin turn, turn left. Stay on the main trail (Route Forestière du Colombier). Continue on the main trail to the left. Turn right to begin a long, winding descent on the Route Forestière des Lacs. At the intersection, enjoy the view of the Austrian pine plantations that help prevent erosion. Turn right. After the reservoir, turn right. Shift gears—it’s uphill! Back on the outbound route, turn left. Continue straight ahead to the Jubéo parking lot. Upon returning to the Jubéo parking lot, take advantage of the picnic tables to eat in the shade of the pine trees and cool off at the fountain.

This quite long hiking makes you walk around Saint-Genis Mountains Corrie from its ridges and balcony paths. There are no difficulties during this trail. From the parking lot, follow the path on your left. Step over the fence and reach « Le Pas de Jubéo ». Take a rocky path hiking up on your left to Sait-Genis Mountain side At the « sous le pas de l’Aup » signpost, you can do a roundtrip to the Roc de l’Esculier (1432 m): take the left path through broom flowers to reach the ridges. At the junction, follow « Colombier pass » on your right. Go on a track and after two hairpin bends, turn left towards Colombier pass (1151 meters). At Colombier pass, continue on your way and take the track heading straight to Lazer pass. At Lazer pass (1191 m), take a path on your left and reach the grazed ridge. Follow it until « Porte Sereine ». At « Porte-Sereine », take the path on your right and go down into a beeches woodland which transforms into a pine trees one. On your left, go down a path leading to a forest track until « Le Chastel » signpost. Follow the left track and at the « RF du château » signpost, take the path going down the slope towards the canyons and reach a junction a 100 meters further. Follow the right path leading to Jubéo’s parking lot. Cross over the Riou river by a small bridge and hike up again in a pine trees forest until Jubéo’s parking lot.

This route winds through the valley, offering views of the wide-open countryside. The route, which follows mostly wide, easy-to-navigate country roads, takes you through the rural landscape of Savournon. Starting from the market hall, head toward the church on your left and follow the trail marked MTB No. 13 to the school. The D 21 road turns right. Follow it for another 200 m and continue along the GR trail toward Les Gonillons and the campground. Leave the D 21 and turn left. Leave the GR and turn right. Turn left toward Montagne d'Aujour and then continue straight toward the mountain. After the small sheepfold, at the four-way intersection, finally head down the left path! Return along the same route you took on the way there, crossing the farmyard until you reach the stop sign.

A lovely loop offering beautiful views of the western part of the Provence Highlands. The trail runs mainly along ridges and is relatively shaded.The church in Melve, the tower with its sighting tube, and a Geopark information panel add a cultural dimension to the hike. From Melve (839 m), take the uphill street that runs behind the church and alongside the cemetery. After the last house, the paved road turns into a dirt track as it follows a ridge. Leave the track to the left just past a water intake to follow a trail. Once on the plateau, follow the southern edge to the left, toward the Tower and its sighting tube. Continue north across the pastures to reach a ridge. A dizzying section through the marl requires some caution. The rest of the route follows the southern slope of the mountain, crossing three marl sections that can be tricky. On the ridge, take the trail to the left up to the summit. At the place called Les Croix (1,412 m), continue along the trail to the west. It follows the ridge all the way. Below Tête de Boursier (1,235 m), a short round trip (10 min) offers a beautiful view. Alternatively, take the descending trail, starting through an oak grove, then through steep pastures. A slightly steeper section through marl, followed by more shaded areas, will lead to the paved road (D 104). At Chemin de la Plane (855 m), follow the paved road toward Melve. At the hamlet of Le Serre, take the trail (a sunken path at the start) that climbs to the left. After a short walk, you’ll reach the Plateau de la Tour de Melve, leading to Point 2. Take the same path back down in the opposite direction.

This loop trail takes you past a cluster of farms that primarily raise sheep. It’s an easy hike, but the length of the route should be taken into account. An excellent mid-season hike through wide-open landscapes. In Melve, take the street opposite the church that winds its way downhill between the houses. As you leave the village, continue on to reach the Sigoyer road and follow it to the right. In the hamlet of Les Baudes, leave the road and turn left behind the houses onto a trail that, after crossing a wooded ridge, runs alongside a brand-new solar power plant, which is still under construction as of today. After a small pass near the Plaines farm, the path enters a pine forest. 800 m further on, it crosses fields (watch out for sheep) and continues along a small paved road. Leave it to the right via a trail near a power line. Descend to the footbridge spanning the Syrièz ravine and climb back up the other side to the road. A small stone cairn marks the start of this trail. Take the paved road to the right and pass in front of the Masses farm, where the road turns into a dirt track to cross the Syrièz again. A long climb follows to reach the road from Melve to Sigoyer. Follow it 150 m to the right and take a dirt track, then a trail that cuts across a bend in the road to reach Sigoyer. In Sigoyer, below the school, head up to the church square. An orientation table offers a panoramic view of Mount Lure, Mont Ventoux, and the Baronnies Provençales. An interactive kiosk tells the story of the castle. Take the stairs below the orientation table to reach a trail on the right that leads beneath the castle to the Corpatasse ridge. At Corpatasse (760 m), continue along the trail, leaving the path descending toward Les Sagnières on your right. After 200 m, the trail ends and turns into a footpath as it enters the pine forest. Once in Chantemerle, ignore the trail descending toward Thèze and Le Mouson and take the path to the right, which turns into a trail just below the old Mitouret farm. Head back up the paved road, passing in front of the Fouquetis farm, and leave it at the next bend. A trail crosses a small ravine and leads to a water intake. Continue along the track, turning left twice. Pass in front of the Verdillon farm and, still following the track, reach the Cabusse and Prédannau farms. Leave the paved road on your right and, staying on the trail, arrive at the Forest farm. Across from it, take a trail that is barely marked at first and leads into the woods until it reaches a draye (an ancient path used by sheep herds); follow it up to the ridge and continue left toward the Tât farm. Pass by a water reservoir and you’ll quickly reach the hamlet of Les Baudes, where the trail rejoins the starting point of the hike.

History: Fruit production is very old since documents concerning fruit transactions have been found dating back to 1358. The real boom began in 1930 and developed strongly at the beginning of the 1960s with the setting up of new irrigation networks thanks in particular to the construction of the Serre-Ponçon dam. The lake thus formed, the first large artificial earthen reservoir in Europe, is a water reservoir allowing the irrigation of the Durance Valley. The south of the Hautes-Alpes benefits from an exceptional sunshine which is particularly suitable for the orchards and vineyards along this tourist route. Along the route you will discover local producers as well as restaurateurs, and many perched villages, the castle of Tallard, between the vineyards of the Théus plain and the orchards of the Durance Valley which produce famous fruits: the "Gap pear" known since François I, the Passe Crassane, the Golden Delicious. The National Botanical Conservatory of Gap Charance preserves very old varieties of apples and pears.

This tour will take you through the rural area of Lazer and the surrounding peaks. Since the route follows mainly roads and trails and has relatively little elevation gain, it is suitable for the whole family. At the town hall, take the road to the right of it and head up toward the village church. Pass the church and continue to the left. At the first bend, after the church, go down into the field below, then follow the path that runs alongside the Barbiers stream. Continue along the stream until you reach the road. Take this road to the right. It quickly turns into a dirt track that continues for about 3 km until you reach a bridge with an intersection. At the bridge, turn left and continue straight ahead to the hamlet of Les Vollaires. In the hamlet, cross the bridge on the right and continue straight ahead toward Arzeliers. Just before reaching Arzeliers, at Les Roussets, turn left and continue straight on the dirt road for about 1.6 km until you reach a fork in the road. At the fork, turn right and join the D942. At the D942, turn left and follow the road back to the town hall to complete the route.

At the heart of the listed site of ‘la Jarjatte’ in peaceful surroundings at the far end of the valley, La Bergerie offers a world’s end experience, typical of the mountains. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you over a local cuisine made for sharing, evenings by the fire place, a terrace facing picturesque tree lines, individual bedrooms. In winter, la Bergerie is located on one of the Nordic ski runs. The lodge is therefore only accessible by foot or skis. The cottage is 1,2 km from the first car park and 2km from the ski resort of Lus-La Jarjatte. Delicious cuisine and generous picnic baskets available. Half of the meals are vegetarian cooked with taste and pleasure in mind. We also offer tea and cakes as well as home-made drinks. We welcome you for one night or on a half-board basis. Situated above the wine cellar cooperative, this sundial shows a horn of plenty. The dictum is : "May the objectof your desire remain amiable".

The Col de Faye, located at an elevation of 922 meters, connects the Savournon Valley with the towns of Faye, Lazer, and Ventavon. This route, well known to locals, saves time when traveling from the Gap road to Serrois by avoiding detours of several dozen kilometers. It is also one of the highest points on the “Tour de la montagne d’Aujour” cycling trail.

A sundial can be seen on the wall of the local town hall. Its dictum : "The unity of being is the fruit of the present".

Located at 1432 meters high, Le Roc de l’Esculier is the highest point of Saint-Genis Mountain. From this place, a wonderful panoramic view allows you to discover Savournon valley and Saint-Genis Corrie. Many hilly areas like Chabre Mountain, Lure Mountain or Arambre mountain can be seen. Further, Dévoluy mountains and Ventoux mount can be seen too.

Colombier pass located at 1160 meters high, splits up the two Aup mountain’s sides – Aup is another name for Saint-Genis Mountain –. From the pass, you can go to many villages like Lazer, Eyguians, Saint-Genis and Savournon.

When you reach the higher up part of the first big rise of the path, there is an overview on Laragnais valley and Saint-Genis town and Corrie.

La Croix pass is the only straightforward roadway leading to Savournon and the Bâtie-Montsaléon. Located at 838 meters high, you can see Dévoluy massif, Aujour Mountain and Saint-Genis Mountain. From its peak, you can see a small statue of The Virgin Mary.

The ridge of the « Saint-Genis Mountain circuit »’s hiking is an unmissable passage. This place offers a beautiful panoramic view on Le Laragnais, Channe valley and the Serrois. Many hilly areas like Lure Mountain, Monges mountain, Dévoluy mountain, Arambre mountain and more can be seen.

The La Croix pass is the only direct road link between Savournon and La Bâtie-Montsaléon. At an elevation of 838 meters, it offers views of the Dévoluy massif, Montagne d'Aujour, and Montagne de Saint-Genis. At the summit, visitors can see a small statue of the Virgin Mary.

The small source of Saint-Lagier crosses the route forestière du Château (forest road of the castle) passing under a bridge. The stream then flows into the Riou-torrent, as one of its many tributaries. They feed the river by digging the gorges of the same name. They also fill the lake of Riou.

Le Moulin campsite welcomes you to this small natural setting on the banks of the Drôme, just a stone's throw from its source. New offer: 4-person lodge tent with private kitchenette, 2 bedrooms and terrace. The campsite has several toilets and showers, and a covered area with tables (and fridge) for shelter in bad weather. Situated at the foot of the village built on a rocky outcrop, Camping du Moulin is close to village activities: hiking, theme walks, mountain bike trails, archery, tennis, climbing, children's games. Pitches are free.

Valdrôme in Haut-Diois is surrounded by mountains, some with lavender fields. It is a charming hilltop village at 800 m of altitude on a rocky outcrop offering one of the clearest starry sky in France. Hikers, families, groups of friends, sports clubs…everyone is welcome for a night or a longer stay at Auberge de Valdrôme. We offer 6 bedrooms accommodating 2 to 4 guests in single and/or double beds. Each bedroom is en-suite with a shower and a washbasin. There are two shared toilets on the landing.

Families, groups, discovery classes and children's stays will find a wide range of activities and nature sports available right from the house (hiking, Nordic and Alpine skiing, via ferrata, climbing, orienteering, accro branche...). The center, 6km from the village, also features a solar-heated outdoor swimming pool and relaxation/activity/meeting rooms. As part of its eco-citizen approach, the center strives to minimize its impact on the environment: wood-fired heating, food cooked and prepared on site, eco-friendly cleaning products, etc. The center has been awarded the CED (Citizenship, Environment and Sustainable Development) label.
