Dieuze, Moselle: where history meets nature

Starting from Dieuze or Marsal, this round-trip route connects these two localities marked by the rich history of salt in the region. The Salt Museum and the salt marshes of Marsal, along with the Royal Saltworks of Dieuze, are the last remnants of a prosperous era. The quiet roads separating these two localities will introduce you to the typical village of Blanche-Église and the Seille valley, surrounded by wooded hills. Enjoy a stop by the Lindre pond. The Domaine de Lindre, owned by the Moselle Department, is recognized as a community and international natural site for the richness of its flora, fauna, and landscapes. It is also the largest fish pond in France.

The GR5 hiking route (European path 2) links the North Sea to the Mediterranean. It enters France in Mondorff. This 75 km stage leads from Dieuze via the Pays des Etangs lakes to the summit of Donon.

Dieuze reveals a remarkable 18th century heritage in the heart of its former royal saltworks. The Domaine départemental de Lindre offers you a thousand hectares of water, reeds, meadows and forests and the vision of an exceptional landscape. Tarquimpol, a village located on a peninsula of the Lindre lake, will surprise you with its hidden Gallo-Roman heritage.

This circuit allows you to discover the surroundings of Dieuze by mountain bike or on horseback. This town is known for its former Royal Salt Works. Not far away, the domain of Lindre reveals a preserved nature that can be observed from various observation sites, including the very wild Tarquimpol peninsula. On the heights of the Bride forest, the view extends as far as the blue line of the Vosges.

The Seille is the backbone of the Saulnois area (Pays du Saulnois). The small river was a main thoroughfare for the flat-bottomed barges filled with “white gold”, as salt was termed, from Dieuze, Marsal, Moyenvic, and Vic-sur-Seille and managed to preserve its remarkable heritage linked to this period of salt mining. Vic-sur-Seille is where the local painter Georges de la Tour entered the history of art thanks to his chiaro-oscuro technique, and the town hosts a remarkable museum devoted to the artist.

Starting in Dieuze, this 8-km circuit takes you through the remarkable landscapes around the Lindre lake, a natural site recognised across Europe and the world for the richness of its plant and animal life and its landscapes.

An itinerary to discover Marsal, whose name is due to its many salt springs, and the Seille Valley, as far as the Bois de Bride. Since the 13th century, Marsal, whose name is due to its many salt springs, has been a veritable fortified town that has aroused a great deal of envy. The Porte de France, redesigned by Vauban, now houses the Musée départemental du Sel. After crossing the salt meadows and spanning the Seille, continue your journey towards Haraucourt sur Seille, a typical Lorraine village with beautiful mills and a Mennonite cemetery (an Anabaptist branch that arose in the 17th century as a breakaway from the Protestants of Switzerland). Continue your journey in the Bride woods, a state-owned forest that is several hundred years old and managed by the ONF, with oak and beech trees of remarkable quality.

Starting from Marsal, this circuit for riders and mountain bikers crosses the immense Bride national forest on the heights, then follows the banks of the Seille on a rolling route ideal for discovering mountain biking and horse riding. Double signposting (mountain biking and horse riding).

The V52 cycle route crosses the Moselle region over 65 km, offering a journey between nature and heritage. Starting from Lagarde and its marina, the cycle route traverses the Étang du Stock, a world biosphere reserve, and then passes near the highest Freycinet lock in France at Réchicourt-le-Château. In Sarrebourg, an unmissable stop, the stained-glass windows of the Chapelle des Cordeliers, designed by Chagall, are a must-see. Following the banks of the Marne-Rhine Canal, the route winds through picturesque villages and forests to Arzviller, where the greenway of the Vallée des Éclusiers begins. The highlight of the trip is the Saint-Louis Arzviller Inclined Plane, an impressive structure, before a final Moselle stop in Lutzelbourg with its perched castle, heralding the entrance to Alsace.

Situated between the Petite Seille and the Seille, this itinerary, leading through varied landscapes, links towns marked by their saline past. Vic-sur-Seille, a former episcopal city and birthplace of Georges de la Tour, master of chiaroscuro, reveals itself along its typical streets. Its bishops' gate is a remarkable vestige of the former episcopal castle. After passing over the vineyards along the GR® 5, there are various viewpoints over the countryside and valleys.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Rich in the Gallo-Roman past of Arlon, the museum houses an impressive collection that bears witness to the daily life of this period.One of the peculiarities of the museum is its imposing and rich lapidary collection, composed of several dozen fragments of ancient funerary monuments.These blocks and the objects from Roman craftsmanship will teach you more about daily life at that time.

L'église Saint-Etienne domine le village de Riche. Si l'édifice en lui-même, comme beaucoup d'églises de campagne, est dépourvu de style, elle réserve de belles surprises au visiteur qui en franchit le seuil. Le mobilier qu'elle abrite constitue un joyau de l'art religieux. Le village de Riche s'est dramatiquement fait connaître par les combats qui ont eu lieu les 19 et 20 août 1914. En direction de Morhange, l'importante nécropole nationale de Riche abrite une chapelle gothique édifiée en 1928.

The Domaine de Lindre is a nature park covering some 1,000 hectares. The jewel in its crown is the lake, Etang de Lindre, and its 11 smaller ponds which attract an exceptionally rich fauna and flora: 248 species of bird, 11 species of amphibia, 19 protected plant species, 4 species of reptile and a multitude of pond fish. Thanks to this diversity, the Domaine de Lindre is listed as a protected area in the ecological network NATURA 2000.

Built in 1725 in stone and red brick facing, which were once still visible on the eastern façade, covered with a Mansard roof over a fine framework, and set back from a vast courtyard, this house is called "Le Château". It was a farm of the Custines, lords of Guermange. The adjoining barn, with its high framework, has retained its red brick facings. The interior of this residence, which is currently being restored, is distinguished by its half-timbered partitions and French ceilings on the first floor. The house and the barn are now listed in the Inventaire Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques. Free guided tour by reservation only for a maximum of 4 people.

All the interior walls of the church of St Peter and St Paul, erected in 1729 and adjoining a chapel dating from 1550, are covered with frescoes representing religious scenes created by the Abbot Abbot in the 1920s. Sequential lighting accompanied by a commentary makes it possible to discover the richness of this veritable illustrated encyclopaedia of religious and popular history. "Located in the "Porte de France", the oldest town gate, the Salt Museum at Marsal tells the story of "white gold" via salt production techniques from the prehistoric age to modern times and in particular the so-called "briquetage" technique which consisted of heating the brine in ceramic vessels. From saltwater pools to the impressive collection of saltcellars, the visitor will travel through a world of salt in all its forms. The museum also displays valuable archeological artifacts and traces the history of Vauban's fortifications."

Thanks to the generosity of a parishioner and Abbot LOUE, a chapel was erected near Réchicourt-le-Château in 1880. It is a plain but pure building located in a small enclosure. Inside the chapel you may find a bell from 1669 which is not only rung for people's devotion to Saint-Blaise but also to warn parishioners from upcoming storms. Numerous pilgrims were coming until 1954 on February 3rd, Saint Blaise Day, to pray and have their baskets full of seeds and vegetables blessed. This benediction was supposed to guarantee farmers to have their granaries full all year long.

La ferme de la Seille is 5 km from Dieuze and 7 km from the Domaine de Lindre, in the heart of the Saulnois region. Here you can discover our vast forests, such as Les Brides (2 km away), our many ponds and our green countryside (salt ponds, Seille valley, etc.). Accommodation is in guest rooms or 7-person dormitories. During your stay, your horse friends will be welcomed at the farm, in our facilities: boxes, stabling or meadow. I'll introduce you to horse-drawn carriage driving, and suggest a variety of horse-riding, hiking and cycling trails around Mulcey. Mulcey is criss-crossed by numerous footpaths and bridleways. You can also easily join the GR5 from Rumelange in Luxembourg to the Col de la Schlucht in the Vosges mountains. Mulcey is close to Blanche-Eglise, a stage on the GR5.
