This circuit, intended for lovers of "old stones", serves two castles and two bastides. Perched on its hillside, the listed monument of Xaintrailles, which dates from the 15th century, dates back to the time of Pothon, companion of Joan of Arc. A panoramic site, Montgaillard is a small fortified village "castelnau gascon" from the end of the 12th century. The "new towns", Vianne, founded in 1284 and Lavardac in 1256 rest on the Baïse. In Barbaste, it is the Gélise which, near the Moulin des Tours and the Romanesque bridge, can be crossed. This tour will also take you to the village of Lausseignan whose houses and old church make it a charming site.

The GR® 654 crosses France from Vézelay in Burgundy. It crosses the Lot-et-Garonne from north to south for almost 150 km, from the plum trees of the Haut-Agenais to the sands of the Landes de Gascogne, passing through the Lot and Garonne valleys.

In the heart of the Albret region, between Barbaste and Sos, another section of the Scandibérique (EV3) follows a former railroad line that has since been converted into a greenway. Mostly made of limestone (very fine gravel), the paths are very smooth. For optimum comfort, we recommend you use a VTC or gravel bike. Along the Gélise, you'll gradually discover the impressive Landes forest.

Barbaste was built on the banks of the Gélise, between hillsides and forest, where the villages of Béas and Lausseignan assert their identity, around their church and their trade.

Starting at the Place du Gravier on the banks of the Garonne, pedal past the historical areas of Agen before joining the Ermitage plateau and its viewpoint over the town.

Discover Gascony by bike! The Véloroute which goes through the Baïse valley is connected to the Scandibérique. It starts in Barbaste, at the foot of the Moulin des Tours. The itinerary crosses history on the lands of the young Henry of Navarre, future king Henry IV. Passing through Nérac, discover its "Renaissance" castle, its bridges and its old tanneries. Follow in the footsteps of Queen Margot in the Royal Park of La Garenne. Through small quiet roads, you will progress along the Baïse river to the "Mont des Chèvres": Moncrabeau, world famous for its liars' festival. In this village overlooking the valley, take a well-deserved break on the "Trône des Menteurs" before leaving the Albret and the Lot-et-Garonne. You will probably then head for Condom, the Ténarèze and the Gers, home of d'Artagnan, another proud Gascon.

This short walk overlooking the valleys of the Gélise and the Baïse, offers many views of the castle of Xaintrailles, the bastide of Lavardac, the Mill of the Towers Henri IV, the village of Barbaste and in the background, Nérac, the capital of Albret and the Landes forest.

A medieval bastide on the Baïse River, Vianne is an important stop for pleasure boats. To see the city walls, go to the quays of the port where people used to sail in flat-bottomed boats called gabarres, used to export local products. The mill you will see on the waterfront used to make flour that was sent to Santo Domingo. These exports have now given way to river tourism. At the foot of the mill you will see a large lock that has replaced the old "payssière", a passage used under Henry IV to let boats through. This tour will also take you to the stronghold of Montgaillard which had a strategic position during the 100 years war. You can see the remains of the 13th century castle as well as the ramparts, the fortified gate and the 13th century church.

This late-13th century fortified windmill and the neighbouring ten-arch Roman bridge, dating back to the 12th century, once formed an important defensive unit. According to legend, the four different-sized towers represented the miller’s four daughters. Following a fire in 1937, the buildings have been almost entirely rebuilt and are open to visitors.

The village of Lavardac was fortified around the castle (now destroyed) in the form of Castrum and then Bastide. The Gélise originates in Lupiac in the department of Gers and is one of the shortest rivers coming from the Lannemezan plateau. It flows to the east of Eauze and at the bottom of the chain of hills that separates the Garonne and Adour basins. It joins the Baïse downstream from the town of Lavardac in Lot-et-Garonne. The Gélise drains a catchment area of about 1410 km² for a total length of 74 km, of which 43 km is in Lot-et-Garonne. The Gélise site has been chosen to be classified Natura 2000 because it presents several major challenges such as the presence of habitats favourable to the conservation of the European Mink, the Otter, the European Cistude... Covering an area of 3815 ha, the site extends over 28 communes in the Lot-et-Garonne, Landes and Gers departments.

Situated on the banks of the Gélise river and at the foot of the Moulin des Tours, the Parc du Moulin des Tour offers you a shady walk with a view of the Romanesque Barbaste bridge. The park has picnic tables and a canoe landing stage.
