The Gélise originates in Lupiac in the department of Gers and is one of the shortest rivers coming from the Lannemezan plateau. It flows to the east of Eauze and at the bottom of the chain of hills that separates the Garonne and Adour basins.
It joins the Baïse downstream from the town of Lavardac in Lot-et-Garonne.
The Gélise drains a catchment area of about 1410 km² for a total length of 74 km, of which 43 km is in Lot-et-Garonne.
The Gélise site has been chosen to be classified Natura 2000 because it presents several major challenges such as the presence of habitats favourable to the conservation of the European Mink, the Otter, the European Cistude... Covering an area of 3815 ha, the site extends over 28 communes in the Lot-et-Garonne, Landes and Gers departments.
