Loop 59 - From Embrun to Les Orres

Les Orres! Well-known for its mountain biking, the Gravel can certainly hold its own with this 50km loop for sports enthusiasts. Facing the lake, (start of the mountain bike circuits), join the dam and turn left. Follow the course of the Durance. At the footbridge, cross the stream and turn right. Head along the left bank of the Durance, passing under the bridge. At the no-cycling sign, turn left to cross the business park. After the footbridge, continue along the dam towards Crots. At the end of the dam, turn 190 degrees to the left. Just before the N94, take the cycle lane on the left and cross the road through the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, turn right. At the D90, turn left (/! for cars). At the crossroads, turn right and pass in front of Crots town hall. At the Château de Picomtal roundabout, turn left. Before the bridge (torrent de Bellegrave), descend to the left then turn right to go along the stream to the bridge. At the bridge, ascend to the right. At Chènevières (at the stop sign), ascend the road to the right. At the entrance to the impasse de la Combe, turn right. Continue to the crossroads (recycling point) and turn left. After climbing the hairpin road, continue on the track. At DFCI track H18, take a left hairpin turn and continue straight ahead. As the GRP (red and yellow markings) veers to the left, you ascend to the right. Cross the bridge, then continue along the main path to the left. At the Domaine du Loup Blanc, continue on the hairpin road. At Prélallègre, take the main road on the right towards the resort centre of Les Orres 1650. At the Chalet de la Navette in Bois Mean, continue straight ahead on Allée des Chamois, then go left down the Allée des Fouonts After the gate, take the left-hand path onto the ski slopes. Continue straight on up the path, passing through larch undergrowth. /! roots. In the larch undergrowth, choose the downhill option on the left. At les Abouchiers, descend the track on the left towards "le Melezet". At Les Seyes, continue downhill to the right to reach the hamlet and the road. On the road, turn right. In the bend before the bridge, go right up the track towards "Grand Vallon". At the fountain, continue straight on towards the Saint-Pierre chapel and the Grand Vallon. Then descend to the left, cross the bridge and cross to the right bank of the torrent (return trip possible to the Grand Vallon, add 10 km). At the Château, continue left along the road to Les Orres county town. On leaving "Bas Forest", continue straight ahead on the flat road. At Rue du Fort turn right towards the church. After the communal fountain, turn right twice onto the Méale road and then the stony track. At the crossroads of the DFCI track H24, descend to the right. At Faravelle continue straight downhill then turn right. At the junction at the end of the level track, turn right and stay on the main path. At Les Gaillards, turn right down the road towards Saint-Sauveur. At the church of Saint-Sauveur, turn right onto the road. At Coin Haut, turn left and follow the D994d along the left bank of the Durance, then cross the wooden bridge to change banks. Stay on the right bank to reach the lake.

A very easy route under the rocky overhang of Embrun, magnified by a view from below. Join the path laid out on the banks of the Durance from the beach car park, passing in front of the chalet. Head up the Durance and under the road bridge. Head past the wooden footbridge, then turn left 50m after the footbridge into a housing estate, then right 100m after a small hill. At the next junction, turn right onto a track and turn left almost immediately. Continue along the path until you reach a small road. Then turn left along the Durance then left again 100m later towards Roc d'Embrun. Turn right at the junction, remaining on a small tarmac road. After around 200m, take a wide, passable path to the right and follow it for around 300m until you come to the road that runs alongside the Durance. Turn left and head up the Durance. The narrow road comes to an intersection with Departmental Road 994D. Turn right onto the main road and cross the wooden bridge over the Durance. Turn right after the bridge and take the road. Leave this road after 200m and turn right onto a small path that winds through the woods. Pass under the N94 bridge on the left of the pylon, then follow a track for 1km until you reach a small road. After the Travellers' area, turn left, then follow the road round to the right. At Pastourelle, an abandoned farm, turn left and return to the Grillon camp-site, continuing straight on until you reach the road. Turn right towards Embrun. At the roundabout, take the first exit and continue straight through the cattle drive. At Super U, take the second exit to the footbridge over the Durance. Now you just have to descend along the Durance, as on the outward journey, to return to the car park.

The Saint Sauveur loop

This is a two-stage route, starting with an athletic ascent and then a shady and enjoyable descent back down to Embrun. Join the path laid out on the banks of the Durance from the beach car park, passing in front of the chalet. Head up the Durance and under the road bridge. Then take the footbridge on the right to cross the Durance and turn right again immediately after the footbridge to take a well-developed path alongside the Durance. Take the left-hand track at the next junction 200m further on. Cross a small car park and take the path opposite. Make sure you don’t miss it, as it can be a little overgrown. Follow the path as far as the dam. Take a left at this level. Cross the dual carriageway and take the track opposite. The occasionally heavy traffic requires the utmost vigilance. Go straight on at the sign for the canal, level with a horse farm. Continue along the canal then turn left at the bridge. The path rises to a small road where you need to go straight on. Continue straight on at the crossroads 150m further on. Turn right at the next junction onto a steep road. Follow the road through a housing estate. After a few hundred metres, turn right at the junction with another road. Turn left at Les Clots onto a small road between fields, then right onto a path through the pines. This narrow path winds its way through dense vegetation to a road. Then turn left and then right 75 m further down. Continue along the road. At a sharp bend, turn left to pick up a track. Cross the stream and turn left onto a path that rises sharply. Turn right after a narrow, steep path along the stream. Take the wooden bridge as you return to a wider path. Turn left 150m after the bridge, staying on a wide stony path. Return to the departmental road. Go downhill to the left and after 150m, turn right towards Saint Sauveur. Follow the road up to the church of Saint Sauveur. A narrow path leaves from the end of the church car park and joins the road. Descend the road for 200 m and take a wide path on the left. Go straight ahead at the first junction, then right through the pines and right again on a narrower path 30 m further on. Head right after returning to a wider path, then left. Veer left again onto a single track in the pine forest. Follow the track through the forest. After a long section of single track, turn left onto a wider path on a flat area. Cross the river and turn right just after onto a single track. Continue straight ahead on a wider path. The path ends at a road. Then turn right. When you reach the departmental road turn left and continue along it. Arrive at the road to Les Orres, descend towards Embrun. At the roundabout, take the first exit and continue straight ahead. Then cross the cattle drive to reach the Entraigues shopping area. At the roundabout, go straight on towards the Durance to rejoin the path you took on the outward journey.

From the shores of Lake Serre-Ponçon to the picturesque village of Crots, this family-friendly excursion offers a bucolic setting. Join the path laid out on the banks of the Durance from the beach car park, passing in front of the chalet. Head up the Durance and under the road bridge. Then take the footbridge on the right to cross the Durance and turn right again immediately after the footbridge to take a well-developed path alongside the Durance. Take the left-hand track at the next junction 200m further on. Cross a small car park and take the path opposite. Make sure you don’t miss it, as it can be a little overgrown. The path is extended by a dam overlooking the lake, which you need to follow right to the end. Turn left when you reach the road and take a small road on the left just before you reach the main road. It turns into a track after a few metres and you need to be careful not to miss a small tunnel on the right under the N94. Follow the road to the village of Crots. Take the main road through the village, then turn right towards La Montagne on leaving the centre. There is a short ascent followed by a roundabout. Turn left at the roundabout and take the tarmac road to Les Osselins, always heading uphill. Turn left at the bridge over the Bellegarde stream, then almost immediately right onto a narrow track that runs alongside a channelled river. Turn left at the first intersection, then straight on at the next one. Cross a small bridge a few hundred metres from the road and take a path on the left. Follow the canal then turn right at the horse farm onto a wide, well-maintained path. Head along the farm and then turn left at a ruined house. Join the N94 at the business park and the Intermarché shop and turn right. A narrow path veers off to the right 20m further on to avoid the N94. Before joining the roundabout, cross the road and head for the road serving the Intermarché supermarket. Rejoin the Durance and the path taken on the outward journey. Return to the car park via the footbridge and the path alongside the Durance..

Loop 52 - The Balconies of Mont Guillaume

An unmissable spot just a short drive from Embrun, the Mont Guillaume state forest offers a range of tracks ideal for the little crampon-riding queen. At the start of the mountain bike circuits, join the dam and follow it to the right. After the Club Nautique Alpin, follow the road to the left towards the Chadenas holiday park. Then continue up the main winding path. (/! Please close the fence) At the bus stop, follow the route des Puy to the left (D9) and climb to the right towards Serres (D309). At the fountain, continue up a hairpin bend to the left. At the bend, turn left onto DFCI track G2 (Viewpoint). Continue straight ahead on the main track to join the Route des Puys (D9). Follow it to the right. At Puy Saint-Eusèbe, turn right up the Route de l'Eglise (D309a). Leave the road for the Chemin des Clauséards on the right (DFCI G1) towards Embrun via the Lookout of la Para. At the crow's feet intersection continue along the track to the left. Stay on the main track until you reach the Piste de la Baume. At the route forestière de la Baume, continue uphill to the right (DFCI G1). Stay on this track and enjoy the view from the Para lookout. Continue straight on until you reach the car park. At the Porte de la Forêt car park, turn left onto the route forestière des Fontainiers. At the Route forestière du Bosquet, keep right (DFCI track G82). Before the steep climb, take the path on the right towards Châteauroux, 9 km. /! Quite a steep descent. When you reach the path under the larches, turn right. Stay on the main road until you reach the hairpin, then /! watch your speed. /! slow down: at the hairpin descend to the right and take two left turns down the less steep options. Then turn right at the edge of the wood onto the path on the right, which is carpeted with pine needles. (/! Several short sections with roots and stones). After the houses, continue to the right on the less visible flat track. Above Les Barthelons, descend to the left, then take the first right onto the road. After the hamlet, turn left down the road towards the centre of Embrun. (D465) At the Station, join the roundabout. Turn right and then slightly left onto the pedestrianised street towards the tourist office. At the end of the road, turn right and cross the supermarket car park on your left. At the end of the supermarket car park in Les Moulineaux, head down a small tarmac path towards the lake. /! steep path, tight bends and the lower part has a few stones. At the Chaffal turn right and then left to reach the dam. The lake is on your right.

Notre Dame de Boscodon, a place steeped in history that inspires respect and tranquillity 1) Opposite the lake (where the mountain bike trails start), reach the dam and turn left. Follow the course of the Durance. At the footbridge, cross the stream and turn right. Head along the left bank of the Durance, passing under the bridge. At the no-cycling sign, turn left to cross the business park. After the footbridge, continue along the dam towards Crots. At the end of the dam, turn 190 degrees left.2) Just before the N94, turn left into the cycle lane and cross the road through the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, turn right. At the DFCI track H15, turn left. Then continue straight ahead, leaving the Clos Besson forest road on your left. At the gîte de La Draye, continue straight ahead on the road. At the fountain, turn left towards Boscodon.6) After the "grande cabane" bridge, take the right-hand path down to the "Clos Joubert" forest road. Turn right at Boscodon Abbey. " Au Marquis" (after the bridge over the Boscodon), take the track on the right (picnic area).7) Cross the road and descend the track opposite. At the road go downhill for 20 m, then take the left-hand path marked GR. In the hamlet of Beauvillard, turn left at the road and then left again at the chapel. After the La Cagnolle viewpoint, descend the path carefully (rocks, roots). (You can avoid this short stony stretch by staying straight on the road at La Chapelle.)8) At the road (in front of the sawmill), turn right. Continue straight ahead and cross the N94 /!. Descend the gravel path and turn right. At Chantereine beach, turn right. After the "Manu" camp-site, turn left onto the dam and head up the Durance. Cross the business park to reach the left bank of the Durance. Go under the bridge, cross the footbridge and turn left. Return to the finishing point.
