It is not uncommon to meet a good number of pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela on the heights of Saint-Palais. At the crossroads of the three main French routes, the ancient capital of Navarre has always seen travellers, traders, farmers and other conquerors pass through. The surrounding hilltop villages offer a beautiful array of Basque architecture as well as unmissable views of the Pyrenees. A visit to the castle of Camou is an opportunity to travel back in time before finishing a rich and varied circuit on the old railway transformed into a greenway. Once the bike has been put away, a walk along the banks of the Bidouze and through the streets of the town centre brings this immersion in Lower Navarre to a close in the best conditions.

On horseback, the GR65 will take you to the crossroads of Santiago de Compostela: Ostabat. Passing monastery and steles, meeting places for pilgrims at strategic crossroads, you will be transported to another world and other times.

This loop crosses the heart of the Basque country through small typical county towns! This itinerary, full of contrasts, shares valley bottoms and balcony sections as well as small communal roads and beautiful asphalt roads. A bit like the Way of Saint James.

Several historical routes to Santiago de Compostela converge here and, throughout the day, numerous witnesses to this timeless popular fervour for the long-distance journey will mark out the ascents and descents to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port: crosses, chapels, churches, ruins of hospices, an abundance of gîtes, villages steeped in memory. Add to this the increasing density of walkers and itinerant cyclists encountered, and there is no doubt that you are riding today on a major route. At the end of the stage, entering Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port by the Porte Saint-Jacques and walking down its cobbled alleyway may even give you a few shivers.

The Arbéroue valley, upstream from Hasparren, enjoys peaceful days away from the main traffic routes. Saint-Esteben and Saint-Martin-d'Arbéroue share the upper valley, as do the paths of the day's walk. A hike accessible to all on the foothills of Mount Eltzarruze, where you will take just the right amount of height to appreciate a landscape of hedgerows that only mountainous regions can still preserve. Green meadows, dark groves and white-walled hamlets form a mosaic that is full of Basque atmosphere. The roadside vegetation is varied (hawthorns, chestnut trees, pollarded oaks, locust trees, ferns), and the soil is undoubtedly limestone and karstic (outcropping lapiaz, sinkhole, resurgence).

An interesting stage in the province of Basse-Navarre connects Arancou and Saint-Palais, mostly along the small hill roads on either side of the Bidouze valley. The walk is lined with real architectural treasures, as soon as you leave Arancou, at Bergouey-Viellenave or Garris, whether it be churches, medieval bridges or houses with a strong Basque character.

The town's wood is located at the exit of Saint-Palais on the road leading to Beyrie sur Joyeuse and Iholdy. It is a 30 hectare farm, 25 of which are reserved for grazing animals all year round and 5 of which are planted with self-consumed cereals. The main production is Manex red-headed ewes. They also raise fattening pigs and laying hens. All the milk production is processed on the farm. The dairy ewes are fed with grass, hay and corn produced on the farm You will be able to taste our products according to the season: from February to September, white cheese, curd, breuil, crottin and bercail (ewe's milk camembert) The ewe's milk is matured for 4 to 9 months and is sold all year round. The pigs are fattened in the open air, fed with corn and whey produced on the farm.

Situated between Saint-Palais and Bidache, the Bois de Mixe is an old dependency of the Crown of Navarre sold to the communes of the Pays de Mixe by Jeanne d'Albret in the 16th century. Over the centuries, the wood, initially composed of beech, oak, cherry and ash trees, has given way to American red oak and some softwoods. More productive, this species of oak regenerates easily and gives the Mixe wood a forest life that is still authentic.
