By 10 April 1917, when the Battle of Arras had been in progress for one day, Australian soldiers left to attack the German lines at Bullecourt. A second offensive was launched on 3 May. The statue of the Digger is a tribute to the 10,000 Australian soldiers who fell during these operations.

Weapons, cigarette cases, razors, dixies, helmets… these objects found on the battlefield and assembled by Jean and Denise Letaille, a couple of farmers, tell the story of the Australian soldiers who fought in April and May 1917 in the Bullecourt region. A museum where the objects tell the story!

The site of the Battles of Arras in the spring of 1917, this village was classified as a red zone after the First World War, and can be explored on a tour of the countryside and memorial sites. You'll be impressed by its rural heritage from the Reconstruction period: artesian farms, the town hall with its characteristic pediment and the church with its sandstone bell tower and porch.

Just 20 minutes east of Arras, Saudemont is renowned for its waterside nature and its eponymous angels. The "Angels of Saudemont", polychrome wooden sculptures from the Middle Ages, are now housed in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Arras. Copies have been placed in the chapel of Christ, where they once stood. In addition to this history, Saudemont is home to the only church in the area whose 12th-century Cluniac-style bell tower survived the ravages of the First World War. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1928.

Water is at the heart of Écourt-Saint-Quentin. The commune is literally surrounded by the marshes of Saudemont, Becquerel and Grand Clair. Are you familiar with the Legend of Notre-Dame de Brebières ? It was discovered on the road to Authuille.  In Albert, the Basilica is dedicated to Notre-Dame de Brebières. The legend says that in the 11th century, a shepherd noticed a sheep was always grazing on the same tuft of grass. He tapped the spot with his crook and heard a mysterious voice telling him, "Stop shepherd, you are hurting me !" Digging in the earth, he removed a statue bearing the mark of the knock he had struck on its forehead. It was a statue of the Virgin holding the Child. Inside the Basilica, there is an ancient replica of the rediscovered statue and two stained-glass windows : one depicting the sheep of the shepherd who found the statue, and the other, depicting the competition of horses and carts to win the statue, which sparked rivalries between neighboring villages. Touching it would bring you good luck 

The Saint-Martin church in Thiepval, in the Somme, is part of the Notre-Dame des Hauts de l'Ancre parish in Mailly-Maillet, in the Vallée d'Ancre sector of the diocese of Amiens, It is distinguished by its war memorial integrated into one of its facades.  A plaque honors Adrian Carton de Wiart, born on May 5, 1880 in Brussels ans died on June 5, 1963 in Ireland. Officer in the British Army, he received the Victoria Cross for bravery. Having served in the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, he was wounded eight times, losing an eye and a hand, and survived two plane crashes, earning the nickname "the unkillable".
