Whether you are from Périgueux or just passing through, this greenway, a 15 km long path, is open to pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers and wheelchair users and crosses the Périgueux agglomeration from east to west. It offers you a quiet and bucolic walk, without ever leaving the river bank. You will leave from Trélissac, pass the Rhodas dam and then the Mounards dam, you will cross the Franck Grandou space and then after passing the Barnabé footbridge, you will see successively at the foot of the historical centre of Périgueux, the Houses of the Quays, the Cathedral St Front and the Old mill (l'eschif). A little further on, on a towpath, you will see the "maladrerie" which was once used as a shelter for the sick and homeless. Then take the cycle track parallel to the stadium path.

Although it has a high proportion of tar, the path, initially open, is mainly wooded and shaded. It allows to discover a large panorama, a pretty fountain and to go along cultivated truffle fields at the end of the path.

The abbey of Chancelade near Périgueux is the magical setting where this route begins. After passing the last houses, the small roads will lead you through the woods to the Romanesque priory of Merlande, another enchanting place. Then by a road of crest you will join Mensignac on the heights between the two valleys, before going down towards the Dronne, its points of bathe, its mills its rocks of climbing.

Périgueux, capital of the Périgord, is labeled as a flowery city with 4 flowers but also as a City of Art and History. It has 44 monuments classified or registered as Historic Monuments, including the Saint Front cathedral which is also registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The route is located on a greenway from the train station of Périgueux to the abbey. On an old towpath, this greenway also allows you to reach the Saint Front cathedral by turning left. The canal was dug in the 19th century to facilitate navigation which was hindered by mills, at a time when barges were used to transport goods to the Bordeaux region.

A pleasant loop, the first part of which takes tree-lined paths, then open paths offering superb panoramic views. Halfway along the route, the picturesque hamlet of La Font de l'Auche is a refreshing stop.

This small semi-urban hike takes you to discover the ancient Périgueux and one of the seven hills that surround the city thanks to a ferry to cross the river (out of service in winter).

In 1908, a young English student, T E Lawrence, became fascinated with the medieval period. He decided to cycle around France on the trail of Richard the Lionheart. This third stage will take us from Périgueux to Hautefort, passing through the picturesque village of Le Change, gathered around its church. It belonged to the châtellenie of Auberoche. One of the great battles of the Hundred Years' War took place here in 1345. Going up to the chapel by the small road, the remains of the fortress dismantled in the 15th century give a glimpse of its former power. Going up the valley of the Auvézère, Lawrence will go to Forge d'Ans where thousands of cannons were sunk for the Royal Navy. Then on to Tourtoirac and its 11th century abbey. Finally, Lawrence arrives at Hautefort, whose castle was besieged by Richard the Lionheart in 1183.

The Vézelay route is one of the great pilgrimage routes used by a thousand pilgrims each year who come from the north of Europe before entering France and reaching Vézelay, one of the great departures identified for the French routes. Leaving Périgueux, your steps will lead you to Chancelade where you can admire the abbey founded in 1132. You will then arrive at Les Andrivaux, a former Templar commandery, and after the calm of the forest, then the peace of the canal, you will notice the church of Saint Blaise and the miraculous fountain at Annesse and Beaulieu. Then there is Saint Astier and its church. The crypt of the XI th century shelters the tomb of the saint.
