This walk will take you through the historic centre of Meaux and its jewels, before reaching the Great War Museum. 1) From the train station, cross the parking and walk down towards the Marne. Take the left, and pass under the bridge to follow the quai Victor Hugo for 70m. Go left to cross the quay (careful!), pass in front of the city hall and take a slight right on rue de Martimprey. Go straight and take the rue Bossuet that pass in front of the cathedral, the bishop’s palace and the gardens. At the end of this street, take a left, rue Jean Rose. Pass under the train tracks towards a major crossroads. Cross it and go straight, avenue Paul Frot, take a right on the rue Louis Braille. When it turns right, leave the street to follow the path on the left that catches up with the Brasset promenade. 2) Go on your left on that promenade that goes through a vast meadow before attaining the Brasset stream. Cross it and continue straight in the undergrowth and in the open. At the end of the path, take a right and 60m later, take a left on a path that leads you to the Ourcq canal. Follow it on the right to the road. 3) Cross the D405 at the pedestrian crossing (careful!) and take a left on the side path that, after 800m, arrives to the Great War museum. 4) Pass the museum parking’s road and cross the D405 on the pedestrian crossing. Go straight, route de Chantereine, enter the housing estate. At the crossroad, take a right on the isolated wooded alley of the estate. Cross a path and directly go left. It successively cuts a street, a path, and two streets to end up on another path. 5) Follow this path towards the right. It goes along the D65 and arrives at a crossroad. Nice view on Meaux. Move into the left-most path and, after 160m go right on a path that leads to Cregy-les-Meaux. When entering the town, follow your left on the rue Jean Jaures that passes in front of the church and an old well to arrive rue Roger Salengro. Take this street towards a roundabout where you can reach the GR1. 6) The hiking trail now follows the GR1 until the Meaux train station: Go down the rue de la Roche, cross the Ourcq canal and go right alongside the canal. After a few meters, take the path on the left. It goes down towards the meadow, goes under the D330 where it meets up with the canal. Leave the canal on the left once you have passed the major crossroad below, just before the grove. Cross the N3 at the traffic lights and take the underground passage that leads to the Meaux train station on the left side in front of you.

As a main course, the Patis parc, made up of ancient sand pits where nature has regained its rights, which is the joy of the many birds that inhabit ponds and peat bogs. Go past Pont Neuf and cross the Marne at Pont Foch. 2 - Turn right quai Jacques Prévert Prolongé. After the barrier, turn left and shortly after, enter a right-hand lane. She reaches an alley. Take it to the left then turn right on Chemin du Pâtis. Follow straight for 1300 m past a crossroads and going left at the second. 3 - The path winds its way between two ponds, passes a pumping station and ends at a third pond. At the crossroads, shortly after leaving the wood, take the right path. 5 - The path leads into a beautiful alley. Follow it to the right then continue in the same direction along the avenue de la Marne. Cross the avenue du Maréchal Foch, continue opposite rue de la Crêche. Cross the rue Aristide Briand, the avenue du Président Salvador Allende, the rue de l'Abreuvoir successively and finally take the rue Faubourg-St-Nicolas on the left. 6 - Keep the same direction by taking place Henri IV, rue du Général Leclerc and rue St-Etienne. At the cathedral, turn left, rue de Martimprey. At the city hall, turn right onto rue Louis Geoffroy. Continue cours de Verdun, cross rue Jean Bureau (be careful!) And go up towards the station by rue de Trinitaires.

From there, take successively the rue du Général Leclerc, the place Henri IV on the right, the rue Gambetta on the left and finally the avenue de la République on your right. 3 – Take the first street on the left that soon changes direction to the right and reaches rue Jean Jaurès. Follow this street on the right, pass the rue de la République and turn right, rue des Prés. Take the rue des Cordeliers on the left, pass a street and turn left, rue du Faubourg St-Nicolas. Soon after, turn right, rue du Temple and right again rue de l’Abreuvoir to reach quai Salvador Allende. Cross it and take quai Jacques Prévert. 4 – At the bridge, go right to cross the Marne and follow the quay on the right onto the next bridge. Go left, rue Berge and get to the covered market. Go around it to get to the place Jean Bureau. From there, head left to get to the 4 lane road. Follow it on the right, cross the Marne and walk left to reach the SNCF train station.

Excavated in the 1970s, the cavities were gradually transformed into waterholes, quickly colonised by reeds and birds, thus allowing nature to take over. The Maison du Grand-Voyeux is open to the public two days a week, with the aim of helping visitors discover the Grand-Voyeux while preserving biodiversity and the balance of the ecosystems. A discovery trail and observatories allow visitors to discover the incredible landscapes of the site and the multitude of bird species that have found refuge there. Managed by the Agence des espaces verts (AEV) of the Île-de-France Region since 1999, it was classified as a Regional Nature Reserve in 2012. Built around 1390, this keep is a monumental reminder of Crouy-sur-Ourcq's medieval heritage. Nestling at the bottom of the valley and built at the height of the 100 Years' War, it is the finest jewel in the crown of the Ourcq Valley. To delimit their vast territory, the Counts of Valois built defensive fortresses, often ostentatiously to show off their power and wealth. On the border with the lands of the Counts of Champagne, it was strategic to build this keep on the banks of the River Ourcq from the end of the 14th century. You can discover this keep, the only one in northern Seine-et-Marne and listed as a Historic Monument in 1962, during the European Heritage Days, or take a look at it from the outside during a walk in Crouy-sur-Ourcq.

On the riverside, the City Hall is a building that attracts the eye. Its monumental facade, as we see it today, is the result of a work campaign carried out around 1900. Before, the city hall was smaller, though located roughly at the same place. In 1710, it was situated in the shade of the castle of the Counts of Champagne. After successive restorations, the city hall delivered in 1833 was then facing the North of the city, near the place Henri Moissan. Today, this building is the northern wing of the city hall. The destruction of the castle of the Counts of Champagne (between the 20th of August 1888 and the 31st of December 1890), allowed the municipality to extend the city hall: Auguste Boudinaud is in charge of the works in 1892. In 1895, the municipal council adopt the project’s completion: the construction of a central building thus takes place, and the original building of the city hall (left/North wing) is renovated. The city hall’s inauguration took place on the 4th of March 1900. The main facade was moved to the West (as we know it today), and a public garden was created in 1902 to further highlight it. Must see: the monumental façade of the city hall is worth seeing (balcony, staircase, columns, clock, and small bell tower). The city’s coat of arm crowns the clock (sculptor: Devêche). But there is more to discover! Enter the building to see the main staircase, as well as a stained-glass showcased at the exhibition of 1900: it represents the Count of Champagne giving Meaux its first Communal Charter in 1179. The scene takes inspiration from a book published in 1865 by Antoine-Etienne Carro counting the history of Meaux and its surroundings. The artist who worked on the stained-glassed added the portraits of the craftsmen who built the city hall, including the portrait of the architect, Boudinaud.

350 years in the making… Construction of Saint-Étienne Cathedral began in the 12th century and was completed three centuries later with the construction of the north tower (60 metres high). The building thus combines the different phases of Gothic architecture, from the classical style dating back to the end of the 12th century to the flamboyant style of the 15th century. The two first eastern bays of the nave are the oldest parts of the cathedral. The choir, rebuilt and completed a century later by the architect Gautier de Varinfroy, is a splendid masterpiece in terms of its luminosity, the finesse of its architecture and the height of its vaults. Admire the multitude of sculptures adorning the tympanums of the cathedral's five portals. They bear witness to the violence of the Wars of Religion that shook Meaux, particularly in June 1562. Other highlights include the stained glass window depicting the Crucifixion (14th century), the great western Rose Window (15th century) and the magnificent Organ, the work of Valéran de Héman (17th century).

Come to Meaux and take a stroll through history, from the Cathedral to the Palace of Bishops, past the Old Chapterhouse and the magnificent Bossuet Garden -- it’s a fascinating pastime! In the Middle Ages, the Episcopal district of Meaux extended from the Cathedral to the ramparts or ancient city walls. As indicated by the name, the Episcopal district was reserved for the Bishop, the chapter of the cathedral canons and their lay or ecclesiastical entourage. The Episcopal city, in its present condition, remains largely unchanged since the 18th century. The variety of architectural styles, dating back to different historical periods, form a prominent part of the city’s architectural heritage. The Episcopal City of Meaux retained its religious function par excellence until the French Revolution, as an ecclesiastical city adjoining the lay city. In the 19th century, the Episcopal Palace of Meaux was disputed between the lay power and the Church. Finally, the Law of 1905, on the separation of Church and State, completed the transfer of this historical heritage into the hands of the State. Today and since 1927, the former palace of the bishops houses the Bossuet museum.

Gifted with beautiful cross-ribbed vaults in the basement and in the ground floor, a noble hall in the first floor and a vast attic under the framework ; it is the monumental outdoor staircase, built in the 13th century that most notably seduced, among famous figures, Victor Hugo, during his visit in Meaux (V. Hugo, Le voyage du Rhin). According to historians, the Old Chapterhouse was both the headquarters of the cathedral’s canons chapter and a tithe barn, wine and firewood was almost certainly stocked here. The wooden covered bridge is a construction dating back from the 1930’s. It facilitates the movement between the cathedral and the sacristy. Today, the Old Chapterhouse is used as a sacristy. The former bishops' palace, located at the center of the Cité Episcopale's remarkable architectural ensemble, has been home to the Bossuet Museum since 1927. Inaugurated in 1926, the Bossuet Museum presents the city's historical collections, assembled in the 19th century. Today, the museum's collection comprises over 5,500 objects of all kinds, all linked to the history of the region. A rich iconographic collection evoking Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet, bishop of Meaux, completes the collection. The generosity of eminent scientists has enabled the painting collections to grow considerably: the bequest of Henri Moissan's son, who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1906, includes works by Jean-François Millet, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, Paul-Désiré Trouillebert and Paul Saïn, of whom he was a friend. Since 1983, thanks to Jean-Pierre and Annie Changeux, the museum's collections have been regularly enriched with 17th and 18th century paintings by Jacques Blanchard, Sébastien Bourdon, Mathieu le Nain, François Verdier, Carle Van Loo, Jean Restout and Claude Vignon. The episcopal palace provides an exceptional historical setting for the presentation of the furniture and art collections of the bishops of Meaux. The medieval rooms on the first floor host temporary exhibitions.

The Bossuet garden is a typical example of a bishop's garden. The Jardin Bossuet was created in the 17th century, under the episcopacy of Dominique Séguier, in the straight line of French gardens, with a symmetrical shape evoking a bishop's mitre. Local tradition credits the young André Le Nôtre with the creation of this magnificent garden. You'll discover a number of contemporary adaptations that have transformed the austerity of the original formal garden: a Romantic-style boulder occupies the center of the circular pool, which was originally unadorned; three-hundred-year-old yews stand alongside numerous rose bushes, including the "Bossuet Aigle de Meaux", a species created in 2004 to celebrate the tercentenary of the death of the city's emblematic bishop: Bossuet.

Meaux’s war memorial was inaugurated on 24 May 1903, following the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. This column, surmounted by the Winged Victory, originally paid tribute to the children of the Meaux district who died during this conflict. At the base of the sculpture, a lion stands guard, gazing eastwards towards the “Blue line of the Vosges.” It commemorates the work of sculptor Bartholdi, as well as the resistance of Belfort under the command of Colonel Denfert-Rochereau against the Prussian armies. After the Great War, the monument was extended. The names of peoples who died during 19th century conflicts are written on the other faces of the pedestal. In 1923-1924, Meaux had the wall surrounding its monument built, featuring the Adrian helmet on the pillars of the gate. The names of the children of Meaux who died for their country in 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 appear on plaques fixed to the wall.
