Circuit that climbs the Col du Mont-Cenis and then follows the Lac du Mont-Cenis. Then it goes through a wild little valley till the Col du Petit Mont-Cenis. After the Col du Mont-Cenis, take the first right, then turn right again. Keep going straight on beside the Lac du Mont-Cenis to the Col du Petit Mont-Cenis. The road surface is good, and there are light traffic levels. You have the possibility to drink water in Lanslebourg and to the Petit Mont-Cenis, and you can eat something in Lanslebourg and to the col du Mont-Cenis and Petit Mont-Cenis. The nearest bike repair shop is located in Lanslevillard. With its turquoise lake and magnificent scenery, the Col du Mont Cenis is a great place to take a long and relaxing break. The road over the pass has been an important route between France and Italy for more than 1000 years. You can find out more about the area’s geography, history and wildlife by visiting the Musée de la Pyramide (audio guides in English, French and Italian) and the Alpine Garden at the Plan des Fontainettes.

Kilometre posts line the road to the Col du Mont Cenis, which culminates at almost 2000 m, beside the eponymous lake. The road continues to the Col du Petit Mont Cenis, where there is a nice, friendly mountain hut. The 2084-m high Col du Mont-Cenis towers above the Maurienne and Susa Valleys, at the heart of the Mont-Cenis Range. This prestigious pass marked the border between France and Italy until 1947. The very narrow road that existed under the First Empire (wagons had to be disassembled and carried on mules) was widened by Napoleon Bonaparte, with construction taking ten years, from 1803 to 1813, and involving the toil of 3000 labourers. During the work, the 9th-century hospice was extended so it could provide shelter for poor travellers, not for travellers “who thanks to their fortune can enjoy the hospitality of the inns set up along the road”, to quote the rules introduced by the Bishop of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne. Pope Pious VII stayed at the hospice in 1812. He was in such poor health he was given the last rights but, against all expectations, he recovered and was able to get back to France. There are some kilometer markers during the Mont-Cenis itinerary.

On the way up you'll have all the time you need to take in the beautiful scenery. The descent should put a smile back on your face. The 700-metre elevation gain on the way up takes grit, but with a steady pace on the regular incline you'll get there in the end. Most of the ascent is on a track. The descent begins on a picturesque singletrack path where you'll have some fun on the steep sections,. It ends on a track which will give your brakes a rest. From the top, there are superb views over the Mont Cenis range and the Vanoise glaciers.

The track up to Lanslevillard is a gentle climb and the return descent poses no problems. You simply go to Lanslevillard and back, on very pleasant tracks where you'll encounter no difficulty and can enjoy views over both sides of the valley.

Travelling from stream to stream, explore a south-facing slope where alpine meadows merge with forests. Accessible almost all year round, this route is full of variety. In winter, the frozen streams attract your attention. After a gradual ascent, venture through the Pierres Longues pastures, to the sound of whistling marmots. They live here in the sunny season. In spring and autumn, herds graze peacefully. In the height of summer, it's not uncommon to spot farmers haymaking. A quick detour to your left and a short break in the sheltered rock caves of Les Mandes make you picture the Belle and Sebastian film set. Cool off at the Ravine stream. In the Pramaria Forest, you might just receive a visit from a few deer. Hidden from view, they share their home with the mountain hare. Waterfalls and streams create the backdrop of choice for your journey to the Adroit meadows. Don't forget to take a break at St-Jean Baptiste chapel for a taste of culture before heading back to Val Cenis - Lanslebourg, along the peaceful Chemin du Petit Bonheur. Don't you feel like you've now gone through all the myriad moods of a mountain village?

A beautiful loop itinerary, mostly on very pleasant tracks in the forests of Lanslebourg and Termignon. A great option in very hot weather. The long steady climb should be taken at a moderate, regular pace to reach the top without too much difficulty. The ride down to Val Cenis Termignon is not technically challenging and the return to Val Cenis Lanslebourg is via the Chemin du Petit Bonheur. But first, stop at the top to admire the view over the Valley and the Vanoise mountains.

Cross an enchanting forest to reach a rocky promontory. Enjoy spectacular views as you journey through a wide range of mountain landscapes. Stop dilly-dallying! A breathtaking panoramic view awaits you up there... Marmots' calls greet you as soon as you leave the village. Cross the Sainte-Marie stream and embark on one of the area's most beautiful approach hikes. The Pramaria woods are wonderfully cool and refreshing. Spruce and fir trees dominate here. Can you feel the serenity? Suddenly, as if by magic, Massif du Mont Cenis rears its head on the opposite slope. When the Lombarde starts to blow, an astonishing sight often begins to unfold as clouds envelop the Col. A well-deserved food stop may tempt you to stay overnight in this unsupervised refuge. In the hamlet of Cuchet, ruins and restored chalets come together to create an authentic mountain atmosphere, showcasing traditional life in the mountain pastures. Herds, marmots, and chamois often share this living area. Sometimes, you can even spot the wings of a bearded vulture as it soars over La Turra ridge and the peak of Grand Vallon. At the fringes of Vanoise National Park, enjoy a succession of exhilirating viewpoints that'll give you wings as you make your way down a trail designed for experienced trail runners and hikers.

On a hot summer day, there's nothing better than a hike through the mountain forest to cool off. Discover the ski resort's summery side as you set off in search for new thrills. The song of the tits calls out to you the moment you enter the forest, at the top of the Pont des Chèvres chairlift. Interspersed with high-altitude clearings, the first part of your journey is so serene you almost forget you're going uphill. Cross through the Revet forest under the watchful eye of La Turra fort, perched at an altitude of 2,507 m. Passing the Madeleine stream, you enter Vallon de Cléry. Take a break at Chalet Suiffet, where time stands still, before starting the descent. Did you know that, as you go down to the village, you'll be walking in the footsteps of the "elders"? In the past centuries, so much hay has been transported along this Ramasse trail that your descent on the "fast path" takes on all the charm of tradition.

The slope is never steep, but requires continuous effort for 8.3 km and an elevation gain of 724 metres. The entire trail is through woodland, ideal for keeping cool. At the top you have access to three Enduro trails.

So far away, so close to Lanslebourg, enjoy a historic link to Termignon. Overlook the Arc valley and discover a sunny balcony with a Mediterranean feel, linking two villages in the heart of Haute Maurienne. Need a short getaway? Looking for a flexible route? The departure point of the Mandes circuit offers privileged access to the Genevraz woods from "les Côtes". Under the whistle of the first spring marmots, enjoy the warmth of the sun as soon as the sun comes out. Stroll through a pine forest of fragrant sylvestre trees, watching for anthills ...... Perched on your left, the Col du Mont Cenis gives you an idea of the high mountain atmosphere. Enter the denser woodland and follow the well-trodden path past the Fontaniou stream, often crowded during the snowmelt. The crossroads of the paths testify to the richness of the area: there are so many walks to be had between Pré Chamois and Belvédère! But make no mistake, your destination for the day takes you straight to the heart of the village of Termignon. You'll need a little vigilance to reach a small rocky ledge and, in the space of a breath, cross the tarmac road. Facing the Dent Parrachée, the descent will delight the contemplative. Take advantage of the Chemin du petit bonheur to return to Lanslebourg in the cool of the fir trees. Or would you prefer to take the bus back? Anything goes on this "à la carte" route!

This refuge of the Vanoise National Park is on the GR5, not far from the glacier of the same name. This refuge offers a superb unobstructed view from the roof terrace. The old chalets have been converted into 6- or 10-person dormitories for a pleasant stopover in the refuge. In spring, it is guarded for ski touring. In the heart of the Vanoise National Park, bivouacs are only permitted during the summer months on dedicated sites in the immediate vicinity of the refuge, during the guarding period. You have to book your pitch in advance with the refuge.

The only fort built by the French on the Mont Cenis plateau, it is ideally located, perched on its promontory. It will offer you a view of the Mont Cenis lake, the Italian mountains, Val Cenis Lanslebourg and the Haute Maurienne Vanoise. A bit of history: with tensions rising between France and Italy at the end of the 19th century, the French decided to build the Turra fort to guard the Mont Cenis plateau (the border with Italy) and confront the Italian forts of Pattacreuse, Ronce and Malamot. The Turra fort was built between 1893 and 1900. Eventually, tensions eased and the fort remained under civilian guard for a long time. It was not reinvested by the army until the mid-1920s, with the rise of Fascism in Italy. In June 1940, it was attacked by the Italian army. The French resisted and repelled the various attacks. The French soldiers did not leave the Fort de la Turra with arms and baggage until 1 July, after the armistice. They rejoined the French lines after receiving the honours of their adversaries. Mont Cenis was again the scene of violent fighting in 1944 and 1945. The site no longer has its warlike vocation and now offers a superb hiking destination from the Col du Mont Cenis, with a breathtaking view. Access: from the Col du Mont Cenis, take the path up through the mountain pastures to Petite Turra. Follow the path to the right as far as the Fort. Retrace your steps and descend along the old military track, then the forest track on the right. Follow the D1006 as far as the Col du Mont Cenis.

The surrounding areas of your walk will be favourable for coming into contact with the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). In summer, these wild ungulates frequent the areas located above the domestic flocks. Look carefully at the highest grassy slopes, the névés or screes around you and you will most certainly see them, even at over 3,000 m in altitude!

"Classified as an ""historical monument"" in 1911, the Pierre aux Pieds is the most imposing of the engraved rocks of Haute-Maurienne. This shiny block of schist has 82 hollow feet (rather small), of which 33 are pairs and about 50 cupules. It is estimated that these engravings would have been made during Protohistory (1,800 to 15 BC). Other inscriptions and a sword were later added. There is no certainty as to the meaning of these engravings. A number of theories have been put forward but the mystery remains."

The large birds of prey love this area Open your eyes and you may be lucky enough to see the magnificent sailing ship that is the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), the bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) and the black vulture (Aegypius monachus) come to summer.

Ÿou will meet 3 oratories dedicated to Saint-Antoine, a hermit and protector of donkeys and mules. The 1st oratory, dating from 1973, was the year in which the road was created. The second, dating a priori to the Italian occupation, was already known on the Sarde map in 1728, and was rebuilt in 2005. The third oratory is a rock crevice which has not been dated. Sainte-Antoine has some distinctive characteristics, a cow bell and the Tau des Antonins (T-shaped cross).

Between 1180 and 1350 the spice trade was active. Smugglers or, perhaps, honest merchants, to thank the Virgin Mary for their many safe journeys through the Vanoise, had this chapel erected in 1536 (testament of the late Jean Perrin) in place of one of their shelters. It was remodelled in 1632, 1710 and 1841 each time in the same spirit. This chapel sheltered ex-voto paintings of mule-drivers and a black virgin, which has now sadly disappeared.

This 50 metre calade in the hamlet of Villard comprises 13 “coltsfeet”. This arrangement of stones set without mortar, facilitated the passage of mule caravans in this steeper portion of the path. Between 2010 and 2014, a joint operation between the town of Termignon and the Vanoise National Park, through the involvement of the Park workers and subsidies granted to the town, resulted in the clearing of about ten cubic metres of land and the reconstruction of dry stone walls.

This WWI unique memorial, represents a lady in local dress crying for a relative dead at war. Luc Jaggi-Couvert, originally from Termignon, created this masterpiece. A woman, in local costume, is mourning a relative lost in the war below the church of Val Cenis Termignon. This work by Luc Jaggi-Couvert, a Swiss sculptor from Val-Cenis Termignon, was one of the first monuments to the pacifist dead, even though most people exalt patriotic virtues.

A private refuge built in 2014, the 52-seat Lo Tsamou refuge restaurant is entirely self-contained and eco-friendly. It offers panoramic views of the Vanoise and Haute Maurienne peaks. Welcome to the "Lo Tsamou" refuge, "Le Chamois" in local dialect. Perched at 2,060 m, it is a splendid destination for a walk (1h to 1h15) from the church of Saint Pierre d'Extravache, the first church in the Maurienne, a starting point for numerous hikes and a gourmet stopover. Joseph and Lola welcome you all summer and offer you their table. Relax on the terrace and contemplate the scenery while enjoying cheese and charcuterie, or Savoyard specialities such as Matouille (tomme fondue with potatoes and charcuterie), pavé de cerf.... (Meals for all budgets from €10) And if it's snack time: crêpes, tarts (...with wild rhubarb), real hot chocolate... Come and have an unforgettable time: stilts, coordination skis, tug-of-war, giant skittles, wheelbarrow races, ring games and wood sawing with a skeleton key. This last game is very funny: you have to saw a tree trunk with this big traditional two-person saw called passe-partout, and it's timed! Easy access from Bramans: head for St-Pierre d'Extravache RD 100 (5km), stop at the chapel parking lot. Continue on foot along the path signposted Lo Tsamou à Montbas. Alpine pasture without patoos. Special meals (gluten-free, vegetarian, pork-free, vegan, allergies) are no problem, as long as you let us know as soon as possible!

In a few words... - We favor short circuits and cook over a wood fire. - Our refuge is 300m from the Bellecombe parking lot, making it very accessible and perfect for families and hikers. - We offer 28 beds in comfortable rooms for 2 to 6 people. - Our cows are grazed to make Beaufort by the Haute Maurienne Vanoise dairy cooperative. Practical info: - Don't forget to book! - Free shuttles from Termignon in season. - Find out about the regulations governing the heart of the Vanoise National Park (dogs not allowed...). - We do not accept credit cards. Our refuge is approved for minors and schoolchildren. We are companions of the FFRandonné route. We have been awarded the "refuge en famille" label by the FFCAM. The main walks/randos from our refuge: - The magnificent Bellecombe lakes loop - The short walk to Plan du Lac (accessible with a baby carriage) - La pointe de Lanserlia, ideal for a wild loop hike with spectacular views of the Vanoise glaciers (700+, unmarked). The surrounding mountain huts: Plan du Lac, Vallonbrun, Lac Blanc, La Femma, La Leisse, Col de la Vanoise and Arpont. Great hikes : Our refuge is ideal as a stopover on the GR5. It is also a popular starting/finishing point for the Vanoise glacier tour.
