The loop no. 5 "Le littoral lorientais" is a 65.5-kilometre walking route that can be covered in 3 days and is therefore perfect for an extended weekend, taking advantage of a Friday or a Monday holiday, for example. Accessible by train from its starting point, Lorient, this loop offers, like its previous colleague, a roaming that smells of the sea air. Focusing on the western outskirts of Lorient before heading inland, we particularly like to take a look at the island of Groix and its famous and stunning convex beach from the tip of Talud, less than 6 kilometers from the coast. A 6 km walk that brings together a series of 80 black and white engravings to discover the streets of Lorient in the form of an original hike. From the historic port of Lorient, you'll make your way along the Scorff before reaching the Blavet estuary, which offers stunning views over the maritime landscape. The pedestrian circuit ends at Pen Mané jetty in Locmiquélic. A waterbus will take you back to the starting point in Lorient in 8 minutes. Don't forget to check the timetables in advance. Get back on board for Keroman and travel along the Lorientaises streets to the Quai des Indes. Remember to inquire about boat bus schedules upstream. Kerfichant (which means “village of a peron named Fichant”) is a locality that straddled the communes of Lorient and Ploemeur. It was originally a village made up mainly of farms. On Liberation, Lorient asked the prefect to attach to its territory the commune of Keryado and a large part of the commune of Ploemeur from Kerfichant to the Ter, via Lanveur, Kerdiret and Kervénanec. The General Council approved the expansion of Lorient which became effective on 1st October 1947. At the beginning of the 1990s, what was to become the Kerfichant neighbourhood was the last place in Lorient to retain its rural character. This is evidenced by the presence of the last farm in Lorient, located on the rue des Ormes, run by Francis Le Moing, which was still in operation in 1994. There were only a few cows then.

After the war, all that was left of this 17th century fountain was a hole almost buried beneath mud and brambles where cattle came to drink. Only when the land belonging to the Bourgneuf manor house was bought by the town, were the ruins revealed. Many of the stones had been stolen but the fountain as it existed in the 1940s remained in the memories of many. It was completely restored in 1992.

The church of Sainte Thérèse was built in 1929 in the regional Breton style, an architecture that “resembles secular Brittany”, according to the words of the bishop of Vannes in 1935, “full of spiritual colours under a serious, austere, modest aspect”. Made of blue granite from the quarry of Quéven, with a reinforced concrete frame, it is topped by a vast slate roof. Inside the spacious, bright nave, is a white vaulted ceiling reposing on marble columns. A huge mosaic brings colour to the choir vault. Building was interrupted by the war but finished with the bell tower in 1957. 

Created at the end of the 19th century, the two washhouses are fed by the same spring but separate, as they were for different populations. Poul ar Laou “the lice washhouse”, with its single basin, was freely available to the poorest people.  You had to pay to access the Poul Argand (or the silver washhouse). It had four basins and a dryer. A matron was responsible for its upkeep.

The path lined with an embankment of oak that passes through the housing estate reveals Kerfichant’s recent agricultural past. Sunken paths were recorded on the land registry as service paths and were the traditional routes people took through the landscape of fields and hedges (bocage). They used to link the fields to the villages, hamlets and farms. Where preserved, they increase the local biodiversity and act as a biological corridor allowing the survival of many species.

Oaks line the path that runs along the pipe route from Belle Source to Chevassu park. The location of the spring can still be seen behind the Kerguestenen old people’s home where oak trees form a circle around a wetland.

At the request of the Agglomeration, it was hoped that appear on the pumping station (which raises the wastewater) The Duke of Duras, vessel built in 1765 in Lorient, renamed Bonhomme Richard who distinguished himself in front of the English during a naval battle of the American War of Independence. Several of the works have been signed by Kaz, one of the unavoidable graffiti artist of the Diaspora Crew collective who draw inspiration from the surrounding natural heritage by modernizing transformation stations.  Artist Kaz added his personal and artistic touch by painting flying marine animals (whales, turtles, rays, etc.) to remind us of nature. Regarding the colors, Kaz wanted to make a reminder of Lorient through the orange and yellow that evoke the sunset.

To your left is the Lavoir of Kerulvé, this small wash house is granite it is located below the rue de Kerulvé. It is fed by a spring and shaded by an oak.

Julien Auguste Pelage Brizeux (1803-1858), a Breton romantic poet, was a friend of Musset, Victor Hugo and Sainte-Beuve. He chose Brittany and the sea as the main themes for his poetry. His French poems (Marie, La Fleur d'or, Les Bretons) or his Breton poem (Telenn Arvor) evoke the landscapes of his childhood with simplicity.  He is buried in Carnel cemetery. Erected in 1888, his statue was inaugurated in the presence of Ernest Renan and Jules Simon.
