Circuit du Pont de la Caille - Cycling itinerary

This tour takes you through the rolling countryside of Annecy's hinterland, to the extraordinary Pont de la Caille, a listed monument well worth a visit. The return journey offers magnificent views of Lake Annecy and its peaks. Points of interest The La Caille suspension bridge, built in 1839 to cross the vertiginous gorges of the Usses, has been transformed into a footbridge reserved for pedestrians and cyclists. Discover the bucolic atmosphere of the hills and hamlets of the Montagne de la Mandallaz and the views over Lake Annecy, the Aravis massif and the Bauges. Cycling advice This is a very pleasant route to do in the shoulder season, as it takes place in the hills at low altitude. Direction : counter-clockwise Landmarks and connections : Meythet (split with Tour de la Montagne d'Age no. 5c and Tour de la Mandallaz no. 6, among others); Allonzier-la-Caille; carrefour des Quatre-Chemins (visit the Caille bridge and return downhill together with Tour de la Mandallaz no. 6). Description: If you take this tour, you'll get to see two extraordinary monuments for the price of one! While the Pont de la Caille is the world's oldest cable-stayed suspension bridge (1839, span 192 m, height 147 m above the Usses torrent), the adjacent road bridge is the world's largest unreinforced concrete arch bridge (232 m long). It's well worth the detour, especially as the suspension bridge, also known as the Charles-Albert Bridge and listed as a historic monument, is reserved for pedestrian traffic. Your starting route up to Meythet is shared with those of Tour de la Montagne d'Age n°5 and Tour de la Mandallaz n°6. At the intersection with the N508, continue straight ahead along the airfield. You will then cross Metz-Tessy and follow a small road on the side of a valley to Allonzier-la-Caille. Just over a kilometer further on, you'll come to the Quatre-Chemins crossroads. From here, continue to the Pont de la Caille, a 2 km round trip. Back at Quatre-Chemins, you'll join Tour de la Mandallaz n°6 (don't miss the sharp left turn at Rossy) for a spectacular descent with panoramic views over Lake Annecy.

Traversée de la Chambotte - Cycling route

This circuit between Lac d'Annecy and Lac du Bourget crosses the hills and passes of the Albanais region. The Col de la Chambotte offers a bird's-eye view of Lac du Bourget. You won't regret the trip! Points of interest Quiet roads for this rather sporty pass, with some very fine descents over the Rhône valley. Cycling tip The pass can be climbed very early in the season due to its low altitude. Direction : clockwise. Landmarks and connections: Rumilly (common route from Annecy with Boucle du Fier n°15); St-Germain-la-Chambotte; Chautagne villages in common with the other two crossings of the triptych; Val-de-Fier (start of common with Boucle du Fier n°15 at the gorge exit). TER station: Rumilly (allowing you to skip the first 20 km of flat terrain). Description : after a leisurely detour via Chavanod, the route shared with the Boucle du Fier and the 3 Traversées takes the Route des Creuses (RD16) to Rumilly. The Traversée de la Chambotte then follows the Traversée du Sapenay to the Cessens dairy. Your ascent is then interrupted by a pleasant 140 m descent to the highlight of the Traversée de la Chambotte that is undoubtedly its plunging view over Lac du Bourget. To fully appreciate it, the best thing to do is to treat yourself to a coffee on the terrace. The small, shady downhill road is unusual in that it has just one hairpin bend, before plunging down towards the end of the lake. It then winds through the foothills, passing through all the Chautagne villages overlooking Europe's largest poplar grove. At Ruffieux, you'll find yourself on the return route.

Tour de la Mandallaz - Cycling route

Tour de la Mandallaz - Cycling route

Very close to Annecy, it start as for the Tour of the Montagne d'Age. During the descent, the views over the city, the lake and ranges are epic. POINTS OF INTEREST This scenic walk takes in the orchards of Cercier, a traditional fruit-growing area thanks to its good exposure, moderate altitude and soil quality. Not forgetting the bucolic atmosphere of the hills and hamlets of the Montagne de la Mandallaz and the views over Lake Annecy, the Aravis massif and the Bauges. CYCLING ADVICE When leaving the Annecy conurbation, avoid entering the Épagny shopping area off the cycle path. Direction: clockwise. Landmarks and connections: Epagny; Sillingy (separation with Tour de la Montagne d'Age n°5, Boucle du Rhône n°16 and Tour du Vuache n°17); Cercier; carrefour des Quatre-Chemins (common return with Circuit du Pont de la Caille n°7). Description: La Mandallaz is a small pre-alpine massif, 8 km long and rising to 929 m above sea level, which forms a barrier to the landscape north-west of Annecy. The site of an active geological fault, it was rocked by earthquakes again a dozen years ago. Joint start with Tour de la Montagne d'Age n°5, Boucle du Rhône n°16 and Tour du Vuache n°17: Pass through Cran-Gevrier, the Brassilly viaduct, then the villages of Gillon, Epagny and Sillingy. At the Sillingy roundabout, leave the other 3 routes and head for La Balme-de-Sillingy via "le chemin des écoliers" (a small lane reserved for children cycling to school). At the La Balme roundabout, take the flat rising RD3, then the RD203, towards Cercier. This part of the route takes you through pleasant countryside. Passing the Croix de Cercier fruit cooperative proves that local agriculture is still very much alive. After passing through the village of Cercier, you follow a very gentle slope along the side of the valley of the Grandes Usses torrent. When you reach the Quatre-Chemins crossroads, you'll find a common route with the return of Circuit n°7 from the Pont de la Caille, which is 2 km below you, so a short round trip is highly recommended to see it! After a sharp left turn at Rossy, the most spectacular part of the circuit begins: a long "descent with views". And what views they are! Annecy at the foot, the glistening lake, Parmelan, Tournette and the Bauges in the background... don't hesitate to stop at the many "photo points"! At the end of the descent, you're in Epagny, where you'll recognize the path you took on the outward journey.

Traversée du Sapenay - Cycling route

Traversée du Sapenay - Cycling route

This route crosses the hills and passes of the Albanais region. The Col du Sapenay is the steepest, offering beautiful views of Lac du Bourget and a fine return via the Val-de-Fier gorges. You won't regret the trip! Points of interest Quiet roads for this rather sporty pass, with some very fine descents over the Rhône valley. Cycling tip The pass can be climbed very early in the season due to its low altitude. Clockwise direction. Landmarks and connections: Rumilly (common route from Annecy with Boucle du Fier n°15); Cessens; Chautagne communes in common with the other two crossings of the triptych; Val-de-Fier (start of common route with Boucle du Fier n°15 at the exit from the gorges). TER station: Rumilly (allowing you to skip the first 20 km of flat terrain). Description : after the common section of the Route des Creuses (RD16) to Rumilly, Traversée de la Chambotte n°12 and Traversée du Sapenay continue along the same RD16, skirting the Néphaz stream. The road, very shady and not excessively steep, takes on the appearance of a gorge in places. Then the landscape suddenly opens up before crossing the Cessens dairy. At this point, we part company with Traversée de la Chambotte no. 12 and climb steadily towards Le Sapenay via the RD54. Of the three Traversées, this is in fact the steepest in its final twists and turns, after crossing the village of Cessens. However, before the tipping point, the road lounges a little in the middle of the meadows, where you can enjoy a picnic break. A short distance from the road, a refreshment bar offers a magnificent panorama of the Chautagne region. The descent, with its dozen or so hairpins, is fast and narrow in its forested section. You join the Traversée de la Chambotte route (no. 12) at Expilly, then the Clergeon route (no. 14) at Ruffieux, before reaching the flat Chautagne road (RD991). After the "hump" at Motz (pronounced "Mô"), the route follows the deep gorges of the Val-de-Fier for 5 km, along the torrent that rises in the Aravis mountains and passes near Annecy and Rumilly before flowing into the Rhône. The return to Annecy is on the RD14, in common with the Boucle du Fier n°15, which is found at the exit of the gorges.

Palais de l'Île

Palais de l'Île

Listed as a historic monument in 1900, the Palais de l'Ile, often described as a "house in the shape of a ship" has been a prison, a courthouse and an administrative centre. It is an original structure, the oldest parts of which date from the 12th century. Firstly a simple quadrangular building described as a stronghold, which occasionally housed the prison and the minting workshop of the Counts of Geneva, today, the building referred to as the Palais de l'Ile is an original medieval monument: It is built on a natural rocky island. The stronghold was referred to for the first time in 1325 as a prison when the lord of Annecy paid Jean de Monthoux, the lord of Isle, for food for two prisoners. In 1355, Count Amadeus III of Geneva was awarded "the right to mint gold and silver on his land" by the Emperor Charles IV of the Holy Empire. A construction campaign led to the creation of a minting workshop which ceased activity at the end of the 14th century. The Geneva family died out. Annecy and the Geneva region were attached to the Duchy of Savoie and Duke Amadeus VIII gave the residence to the Monthoux family. At the end of the 16th century, the house which sheltered the courthouse, became known as the Palais de Justice de l'Ile. After the 18th century, the building was used for administrative functions, but also continued to be used as a prison up until 1864 when a new prison was built. This has since been destroyed. The Palais de l'Ile became a home for the elderly between 1865 and 1880. At the time, Annecy Municipal Council made plans to demolish the Palais de l'Ile in order to make room for baths, but the project was abandoned. The building was used temporarily as a school for stone carvers and carpenters, a gymnasium and accommodation. The novelist Andre Theuriet and Charles Suisse, the Inspector for Historic Monuments, spoke out against the planned demolition. On 16 February 1900, the Palais de l'Ile was listed as a historic monument and a first phase of renovation work was launched. The final phase of restoration dates from 1983-1985.

La Rotonde des Trésoms

Beautiful gastronomy, balance of flavours, heritage and know-how in this panoramic restaurant La Rotonde overlooking the lake. Eric Prowalski offers a fine cuisine with authentic and local flavours without forgetting his south-western roots. Eric Prowalski takes you on a journey of taste, respecting the seasons and quality produce. Take a gustatory stroll from Arcachon to Annecy in his fine cuisine. Share and enjoy the dishes of our region in our gastronomic restaurant, La Rotonde, with its warm, modern décor overlooking the lake and offering a wide-angle view of the lake and mountains. From the "Around a dish" menu served in an hour at lunchtime and during the week to the tasting menu, we have a great menu to suit all tastes. Welcome to a world of sharing, delicate flavours and emotions. A subtle, gourmet cuisine is born. The dishes are colourful, feminine and elegant. Through his creations, Éric interprets the two regions that have shaped his life. A dialogue between the Arcachon Basin and Lake Annecy. "I'm lucky enough to have two cultures. The first is my family history in the South-West and the second is my adopted region (Annecy in Haute-Savoie), which has welcomed me with open arms. Every day, I create a real culinary identity from these dual roots". The theme of water is the link between these 2 natural territories. Each of his creations brings together these 2 worlds, 2 ecosystems, which complement, harmonise or oppose each other. Lake Annecy, calm and radiant, leads him to interpret freshwater fish and the vegetables of our market gardeners. A subtle repertoire!
