Uzès

Classified as a "Ville d'art et d'histoire" and one of France's 1st "secteurs sauvegardés", the historic center of Uzès is sure to charm you. Discover the Duchy of Uzès, the Cathedral, the Medieval Garden, the Place aux Herbes and the Eure Valley. The milestones in the history of Uzès, from Roman times to the present day. Ucetia, a city of water The first traces of human settlement in Uzès were found on the banks of the Alzon, around the Eure spring. At the beginning of our era, the Romans captured abundant water here. It was carried to Nîmes by a 50 km aqueduct, of which the Pont du Gard is the most remarkable part. Uzès, city of bishops The bishopric of Uzès was created in the 5th century A.D. on the model of Roman organization. Until the French Revolution, the bishops of Uzès were said to have coined money and administered justice: prerogatives that testify to their great power. In the 18th century, the diocese of Uzès comprised 193 parishes, making it one of the largest in the Languedoc region. Uzès, past and present Uzès, 1st Duchy of France In 1229, Languedoc, of which Uzès is a part, became part of the French crown. In 1565, Charles IX elevated the Comte de Crussol to the dignity of duke to ensure his loyalty to the crown. In 1632, the Duc d'Uzès became 1st Duke of France. The Duchy, located in the heart of the town, still belongs to the ducal family, who have lived there for over 1000 years. Uzès, Huguenot In the 16th century, Uzès was the fifth-largest Protestant city in the kingdom. But the Uzès temple was destroyed during the Wars of Religion. In 1685, Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes: Uzès Protestants either converted or chose to emigrate throughout Europe. Uzès in the industrial revolution Uzès and the surrounding area were home to numerous mills, now in ruins, but which had been used since the 15th century to manufacture serges and woollen cloth, leather and silk. But silkworm disease led to the decline of sericulture, which employed some 2,000 people in Uzès until the end of the 19th century. It was then that the railway station was set up outside the town, and two new activities were developed: the production of utilitarian and artistic ceramics, and licorice-making. These activities still exist today: Zan, the flagship of Uzès' licorice factories, has become Haribo - Ricqlès - Zan, and the Pichon family's pottery, present in Uzès since 1802, perpetuates tradition and know-how and contributes to making Uzès an internationally renowned destination. Uzès, past and present Beautiful Uzès In the 20th century, Uzès was given a new lease of life when its city center was designated a "protected area" on January 5, 1965. Since then, Uzès has continued to embellish itself: streets have been paved, electrical wires have been hidden, 12 hectares of property were restored in 1965, and today 41 hectares of the town have been classified under the Malraux law. Since the early 1950s, economic development has picked up again, thanks to tourism and the installation of major establishments such as the departmental psychiatric hospital and the new local hospital, the Haribo company, the Haras National stud farm and numerous SMEs. Classified as a "Ville d'art et d'histoire" since November 2008, Uzès enjoys an international reputation, and visitors from all over the world come to stroll its streets and admire its heritage. Gallo-Roman statue of the god Priape

Monumental statues of Priape are rare, but Aureilhac's Priape is a Gallo-Roman statue, close to the one found in Ephesus and dated to the 2nd century AD. Discovered during ploughing in 1970, it is on display in the town hall. The Priape statue was discovered in 1970 during ploughing by the father of the generous donor, Mr. Gérard Mercier. It remained inaccessible to the public for many years, when the idea of giving it a deserved place was born. The idea took shape at a meeting between the mayor and the owner, who was aware of the municipality's interest in protecting its heritage. The statue was transferred to the village hall in 2007. Careful attention was paid to its transport and temporary installation in the village hall. From then on, we began the process of registering the statue with the Monuments Historiques de France, which was completed in 2008, at the same time as we embarked on a restoration project and began thinking about its final location, scheduled for 2009. This little booklet is dedicated to helping you discover this historic monument in greater detail, and to warmly thanking the donor, Gérard Mercier, for his spirit of sharing, as well as Brigitte Chimier, PhilippeTiébot, Nicole Dortindeguey and the members of the Culture Commission for their deep commitment and the quality of their work on this project. Monumental statues of Priape are relatively rare. The Aureilhac Priape is therefore an exceptional find, adding to the many archaeological remains in the commune to confirm the site's importance in Roman times.

Bistrot de Pays Bistrot de l'Hoste

Bistrot de Pays Bistrot de l'Hoste

In Domazan, known for the quality of its vineyards, come and taste the cuisine of Bistrot de l'Hoste: local, fresh and entirely homemade, with a hint of Italy. About us In the Gard region of France, there's a small area that looks a lot like Tuscany, with vineyards as far as the eye can see. Welcome to Domazan, a charming village of 930 inhabitants nestled between Nîmes (30 km) and Avignon (20 km). The village boasts no fewer than 21 private wineries! The village boasts the prestigious Côtes du Rhône label and the Signargues AOC. And to top it all off, the Pont du Gard, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just around the corner. Le Bistrot de l'Hoste is above all a family affair. Originally from Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Pascale joined Domazan three decades ago. Her passion for cooking was passed on to her at an early age by her Italian grandmothers, who taught her the secrets of authentic flavors and traditional dishes, as well as by a whole family of restaurateurs and enthusiasts for excellent gastronomy. The name Bistrot de l'Hoste is in fact a tender tribute to her mother, who ran a guest house. In other words, sharing is an integral part of Pascale's DNA. Today, the café-restaurant has become a veritable meeting place for the villagers. Winegrowers gather here at dawn to share a coffee, while the counter gradually fills up with construction workers, old-timers and travelers passing through. Here, people chat, laugh, gossip and, above all, enjoy good food and good times together. Pascale has passed on her passion to her son Thomas, who grew up in Domazan. After a rich experience abroad and in prestigious French addresses, he returns to his roots with his partner Anastasia, who warmly welcomes you. Behind the counter, he turns the bistro into a living space where he creates original cocktails: the refreshing "Italicus sour" - with a hint of Italian bergamot -, the exotic "Caïpirinha", the sparkling house creation, his "Cocktail bistrot" - basil, yellow lemon juice, house raspberry coulis, Vodka, Perrier - or the most gourmand, the "Expresso Martini" - Vodka, Kahlua, coffee liqueur, Baileys, coffee-. Behind the piano, he delights the taste buds. Like the ambience, the cuisine is family-style, generous and entirely homemade, featuring fresh seasonal vegetables. Undeniably Italian-influenced, healthy and tasty. The daily specials change daily, while the menu is renewed every month. Among the specialties, we recommend the semi-cooked tuna in virgin sauce, with tomatoes and local olive oil, accompanied by snow peas, peas and carrots. You can also try the tender, flavorful onglet de boeuf, or the genuine Caesar salad prepared according to the rules of the art, with home-made breaded chicken that will delight fans of authentic recipes. Mère Maury's ravioles from Romans, stuffed with summer white truffles or basil, are a pure delight. Gourmets won't be outdone by the desserts: strawberries in elegant pavlova or simply with homemade whipped cream, artisanal Ardèche ice creams... The bistro's specialty: lavender ice cream, garnished with pine nuts and lavender honey, with a light whipped cream (no need to tell you it's homemade, right?). The bistro has not one, but two shaded terraces! The first, in front of the bistro, is typically Provençal, with its pretty fountain shaded by plane trees. Facing the town hall, you can feel the soul of the village as you listen to the gentle murmur of the water... La dolce vita is just around the corner. The second is on the charming patio. Here, you can enjoy a quiet glass of wine, or savour a meal while soaking up the Italian atmosphere radiating from the ochre walls. The completely renovated interior features superb moldings, in-house lighting and a unique creation: a wall of 3,000 corks by Thomas, which sits behind the bar. The family has preserved and rejuvenated the 200-year-old counter, recalling the charm of the bistros of yesteryear. The little extra: concert evenings once a month. If you're also a fan of karaoke and like to sing along, there's a special evening for you once a month. Every first Sunday of the month, a delicious brunch is served from 11am to 4pm. An address you won't soon forget, as much for the quality of its food as for the generosity of its welcome.
