Description

A magnificent route through the protected site of the Gorges du Gardon, in the heart of the nature reserve.

From the town hall parking lot, follow the Chemin de La Baume (to the left of the bakery) for 1km to the "La Coufine" sign.

Continue straight ahead. You are now in the garrigue. Wind your way down through undergrowth to reach the river's edge.
In front of you is the old La Baume mill, with the little chapel nestling under the cliff in the background.
Turn left up the path to reach the chapel.

A path carved into the wall leads to the cave.
The cave is open from 15/03 to 30/04 and from 16/08 to 14/11.
Once you've crossed the cave, follow the path for 1.1 km up to the plateau above the gorge, towards the "Les Condamines" sign.

Turn left and follow the GR6 for 800m to the "les Coufines" sign.

Turn right to reach the village of Sanilhac.

Be careful, as the Gardon is mainly fed by resurgences in summer, the water is very cold.
The risk of hydrocution is very high. For this reason, swimming is prohibited at La Baume (Sanilhac-Sagriès) all year round.

Les gorges du Gardon

The gorges du Gardon are home to an emerald river that runs for 157 km through the heart of a bewildering natural landscape. It is renowned as much for its pristine environment as for its potential for outdoor activities. The Gorges du Gardon massif is a unique playground. A variety of fauna awaits you on an excursion to this nature reserve, classified as a "world biosphere reserve" by Unesco. A fragile nature to be preserved! As you descend into the canyon, you'll be amazed by the sheer beauty of the landscape: a veritable cinema set. The emerald-green Gardon winds its way through majestic surroundings. You'll find it hard to resist the call to take a dip, so let yourself be tempted! The cool, translucent water promises hours of fun and relaxation. If you prefer walking or climbing, there's no shortage of paths to choose from either. But beware, there are eyes watching you: all around you, furry and feathered guests welcome you to their territory. You're their guest - show them some respect and maybe they'll pay you a visit. So, when you're out and about, keep your eyes peeled for a pair of Bonelli's eagles or Egyptian vultures. At dusk, you're likely to observe the dance of one of the ten species of bat. When swimming, keep your eyes peeled for beavers. A whole little world has come together, just for you. An ideal site for nature sports With so much beauty on offer, you'll be tempted to glide down the Gardon's crystal-clear waters in a canoe, dive in for a swim, hike or climb its cliffs. The Gardon gorges are the ideal spot for respectful outdoor sports. From caving to horse-riding, there's something for everyone. For access to the gorges, nothing beats Collias If you're looking to laze by the river, picnic with the family or take a dip in the Gardon, we recommend Collias. You'll be right in the heart of the gorges, within easy walking distance and with easy access to the starting points for hikes. And from here, you'll be right in the heart of the local flora and fauna. Note that this site is very popular in summer.
