[Walk] The Fauvism Trail

This tour, filled with anecdotes about Collioure from that era, will enchant you. A bright and enriching visit full of discoveries. On May 16, 1905, Matisse arrived in Collioure, stepping off the train and leaving his luggage, cardboard, and paints at the village's only inn, on Avenue de la Gare, with Dame Rosette.Matisse set off to explore the village, nestled between the sea and mountains, and thought of his friend Paul Signac, who had visited in 1888 and painted several canvases. At first glance, Collioure reveals a mountain of terraced vineyards, dry stone walls, scattered olive trees, and fig trees.Collioure is a village tucked between a bell tower and a castle, prayers and battles, a product of a thousand-year-old history. It is an intimate connection between the sea and the land, a powerful embrace that has carved the rocks into coves and bays where color anchors and sways on the wooden boats of the Catalan fishermen. This first glance becomes foundational.Matisse gradually abandons pointillism in favor of capturing his emotions. In front of this creative potential, he invites André Derain to join him.For this northern man, Collioure is a luminous shock. The two painters share a bond and are in search of a new pictorial world. Together, they immerse themselves in their artistic instincts. The artists engage with Collioure, working intensely outdoors, exploring the village to capture its variations, and immersing themselves in the emotion of the moment. This walk invites you to discover 9 works as you wander through the streets of Collioure, or by following a guided tour (more info). To discover the paintings in video, click here. Madeloc Massif

From a military ambiance to the spirituality of a hermitage, passing through breathtaking landscapes, this journey unveils one of the most beautiful signal towers in the region. Leave the seafront by heading up Avenue Camille Pelletan, then turn left onto Rue de la République and proceed to the roundabout. Cross the road and ascend in front of the church (Rue du Temple). Pass under the railway bridge, continue on Rue de la Galère to the Chemin de Consolation junction, and turn left to leave the village. Pass under the viaduct and continue straight toward the Oratory of Sainte-Thérèse. Take the path to the left at the small bridge. Follow the wide cobblestone path leading to Consolation. Continue along the path and then take the stairs carved into the rock on the left to reach the hermitage. You can stop for refreshments at the Notre-Dame de Consolation Hermitage. Beyond this point, the trail skirts a fenced vineyard and continues through the garrigue. The path becomes steeper as it ascends to the RD 86 and the Col de la Serre. Starting from this point is also an option. At Col de la Serre, leave the road and climb the path on the left. On reaching the Mas de la Serra, continue on the left-hand trail and ascend a steep slope toward the Batterie de Taillefer. Starting from this point (Col de la Serre) is also possible. Descend toward the Col de Taillefer and follow the trail straight ahead. After several bends, you’ll reach the Tour de la Madeloc. Enjoy the exceptional panoramic views of the Côte Vermeille, the Tour de la Massane, and the Roussillon Plain. Descend via a small road to the Batterie des 500 and take the rocky trail opposite, which connects to the GR 10 on the right. Avoid heading toward the Col des Gascons. Ignore the path on the left and continue to the right toward the Col de Vallauria, circling the Massif de Madeloc via the Col de Formingo and Vallauria. Several ruins are visible along the route. At the junction, take the path on the right for 50 meters, then continue right, keeping the Tour de la Madeloc in sight. Follow this trail along the hillside, avoiding the path leading to Col de Taillefer. Retrace your steps along the same path you took earlier.

"From Collioure to Château de Valmy via the Coastal Path"

"Heritage, Sea, and Wonders!" From the Tourist Office, facing the bay, head left towards the famous bell tower of the Church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges.   Before reaching the church, take the left-hand staircase that leads up to the streets of La Paix and Mirador. At the top of the latter, turn around to catch a final glimpse of the bell tower before continuing. Along the way, notice the panels for the "Fauvism Trail" featuring works by Matisse and Derain.   Turn left and head towards Argelès-sur-Mer, using the sidewalk on the right after the roundabout. Be aware that the coast is steep at the start of this hike, making for a good warm-up for the rest of the route.   At the parking lot by the stadium, turn right, cross the parking lot, and head towards the coastal path. Turn left at a right angle, passing the Fort Miradoux (home to the French National Commando Training Center).  The path follows the Vauban fortifications, offering breathtaking views all the way to the cove of l'Ouille.  At the end of the beach, take the staircase that leads to a newly renovated section of the path behind the "Criques de Porteils" campsite.   Just after the campsite, turn left onto the coastal trail to enjoy the first views of the Porteils coves, with the sandy beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer already visible in the distance.   The coastal trail then begins a sharp ascent before finishing with a slate staircase at the entrance to the Racou hamlet. Cross through this hamlet.  At the roundabout, turn left and follow the road to the end. Take a right onto the D114 cycle path. Cross under the tunnel, then begin the climb towards Château de Valmy, passing through the vineyards of the estate.   Enjoy the panoramic views and the exceptional tranquility of this site before beginning your return to Collioure. Just past the roundabout, a wooden footbridge appears on the right, inviting you to continue through the shaded forest on a hilly path that skirts the back of the hamlet, offering lovely viewpoints among the vegetation. Join the coastal path by the paved track and continue along the route you took earlier. (The return can be more direct, in which case you can follow the SNCF track via the path rather than the beach, reaching the cove of l'Ouille.)   Continue along the coastal path back to Collioure.
