You'll straddle the 1860 border before the Comté de Nice became part of Provence. A milestone marking this boundary can still be seen at Col St Pons. Cross the small bridge towards the village exit, and turn right towards the cemetery and the small Notre-Dame chapel. Follow the road for about 50 m, then take the path that climbs to the right towards Castellet-lès-Sausses. The path winds its way up a fairly steep slope to a crossroads, where you need to turn right. Continue along this path for about 1.5km before joining a track in the woods called "Le Chabanal". Follow this track for about 2.3km until you rejoin the path at an altitude of 1436m. On the left, you can admire the pretty rounded summit of Mourre-Frey. The trail then continues to climb slightly for around 500m, before descending into the Belon ravine. Cross the Petit Riou and continue along the path until you reach the ridge of the same name. From here, admire the pretty view to the north-west, towards the tête de Travers. Reach the Pas de Belon at 1263m and continue down the path below, on the side of the Saint-Pons ravine. Turn right at the first junction, then right again at the second junction. The path then leads to the Col de Saint Pons, where you can admire an ancient boundary marker between the Kingdom of France and the County of Savoy. From this pass, descend below towards Sausses. The path has some slightly steeper sections in marl and limestone. It eventually leads to the small, asphalted Colette road, which winds its way down to the village center. At this point, reach the small Riou de Sausses bridge.

Fortification part of the Maginot line. It is a small artillery work that aimed to prohibit the Brouis pass connecting the Roya valley to the north and the Bévéra valley to the south. Built close to the Col de Brouis fort, these barracks housed the troops responsible for the artillery and operation of this structure, as well as soldiers from the outposts at cime du Bosc and Cougoule. During the fighting for the liberation of Breil-sur-Roya in April 1945, the Germans dug in and inflicted heavy losses on the Free French of the 1st DFL. Several ex-voto and a pair of crutches testify and wishes granted.

Located on a beautiful site of the Breilloise olive grove, the chapel incorporates Romanesque apses, Gothic portals and a Baroque bell tower around its three Romanesque naves with baroque decorations. The attic of the chapel is home to bats in summer, protected by the Natura 2000 programme and the Mercantour National Park. The Madonna of the Mount has a basilical plan with a central nave and two collaterals. Three apses in the cul de four extend the three naves. The structure of the main nave is supported by high walls above the arcades that separate it from the collateral. This nave is illuminated by side bays in the upper part. The collaterals, lower, are covered with "shed" frames. They are illuminated by oculus at the top of each facade. The side bell tower rebuilt in the early seventeenth century, is partly located in the south apsidiol which remains partially legible inside. A semicircular vaulted porch was built west of the central nave in the early 17th century. It was raised by the creation of a small dwelling around 1830. A masonry cistern of the same period adjoins it to the north. A semi-elliptical forecourt is located at the front of the side gate, north of the building.

Built between 1610 and 1627, the cathedral's crenellated bell tower and powerful buttresses reinforce its defensive appearance. The refuge sits on a large grassy plateau in a wide alpine cirque at an altitude of 2460m. In summer, the refuge is open from June 15 to September 15. It also opens in spring for ski touring. But in the meantime, there's an accessible part of the hut that can provide shelter. Just leave it clean and tidy. In winter, check the snow conditions for access to the refuge before you leave!
