Popes'Palace

The monumental residence of the pontiffs, a symbol of the Church's influence on the Christian West in the 14th century, is the largest Gothic palace in the world! The Palais des Papes is one of the 10 most visited monuments in France. The residence of the pontiffs in the 14th century, it was built in less than twenty years from 1335 onwards, mainly by two papal builders, Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI. There are 25 different areas to visit: state rooms, chapels, cloisters and the pope's private apartments, all decorated with priceless frescoes by Italian artist Matteo Giovannetti. The monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Babies and strollers: strollers may not be used inside the monument and must be left at the cloakroom. Baby carriers available on loan. TICKETS: Avignon Tourisme invites you to book your visit online by choosing your time slot. Reservations at www.avignon-tourisme.com Tickets can be purchased on site and at the tourist office for slots that are not fully booked. HISTOPAD: an immersive digital tour to go back in time and see the invisible! With the Histopad (digital tablet), step back in time and relive the splendors of the pontifical court in the 14th century in multimedia immersion. Thanks to augmented reality, you can visualize many of the rooms in the Papal Palace as they might have been in the 14th century. The Histopad allows you to take a virtual tour of 9 of the palace's main rooms, which have been re-imagined in their 14th-century settings using augmented reality. Included in the price of admission, until April 2026. THE PALACE GARDENS Recently restored, the gardens are a new attraction for visitors, providing a space for relaxation and a better understanding of the Palace of the Popes as a whole. The Jardin du Pape and the Jardin du Palais join the Verger Urbain V, inaugurated on September 14, 2018, and freely accessible to the public, to complete the triptych of the Jardins du Palais des Papes. This redevelopment is structured into two zones: the Jardin du Palais (or Jardin Benoît XII, 1250m2) and the Jardin du Pape (662m2). The 14th-century hydraulic network was chosen as the structuring element for the design of the Palace Garden, delimiting the large rectangles where Mediterranean plant species attested to in the 14th century in these pontifical gardens are planted. The Jardin du Pape is an intimate garden, with direct access from the papal apartments. The redevelopment of the garden has restored its precious character, with the re-creation of the griffin fountain and the surrounding flower meadow. The famous and imposing Roma building, of which only a trace remains on the ground, has been reconstituted in the form of a monumental pergola, which will eventually be entirely covered with plants. Restoration work has been undertaken by the City of Avignon and Avignon Tourisme with the support of the French government, the DRAC, the Southern Region, the Crédit Agricole Foundation and the L'Occitane Foundation. The gardens can be visited on their own, or combined with the Pont d'Avignon or Palais des Papes. Free for Avignon residents every day of the year, upon reservation and presentation of proof of address. Tours close 30 minutes before the monument closes. Pont d'Avignon (Saint-Bénezet)

Pont d'Avignon (Saint-Bénezet)

The Saint Bénezet bridge, a major witness of the history of Avignon, is known throughout the world thanks to the famous song. Built from the 12th century, it was washed away several times by the floods of the Rhone, and finally abandoned in the seventeenth century. Classified World Heritage by UNESCO. DUE TO THE FIREWORKS DISPLAY, THE BRIDGE WILL EXCEPTIONALLY CLOSE AT 2PM ON DECEMBER 23. Legend has it that the bridge was built in the 12th century by a young shepherd from the Vivarais region, Bénézet, by heavenly command. In reality, however, the bridge's construction was an ongoing project spanning several centuries. Hydrological changes in the river, following climatic changes from the 15th century onwards, were responsible for its destruction. It was no longer used from the 17th century onwards. The bridge was 920 meters long, with 22 arches linking the two banks of the Rhône. A bearer of legends and an emblematic monument of the region, it was the subject of unprecedented interdisciplinary work from 2010 to 2016, mobilizing an entire community of researchers under the aegis of Greater Avignon and the CNRS. The results of this research can now be admired thanks to museographic and multimedia mediation devices that reconstitute the Bridge in 3D in its landscape at different times. PRACTICAL INFORMATION Ticketing: visits to the bridge can be purchased online, at the Tourist Office reception desk or on site, but access is available all day, with no time restrictions. New-generation touch-screen audio guides in 12 languages: Fr, Ang, All, It, Esp, Nd, Jp, Ch, Russian, Polish, Portuguese, Korean (flags). Child-friendly version in FR and GB. IH: The monument has been awarded the Tourisme & Handicap label for motor, mental and hearing disabilities, and is equipped with audio guides for the visually impaired, Braille and audio description versions, and museography adapted for the hearing impaired, FALC. The monument is equipped with an elevator for disabled access. However, we invite you to check that it is working properly before you visit by contacting our team on + 33 (0)4 32 74 32 74. Thank you for your understanding. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Le Pont Saint-Bénézet has been awarded the "Accueil vélo" label.

Bistrot de Pays Bistrot de l'Hoste

In Domazan, known for the quality of its vineyards, come and taste the cuisine of Bistrot de l'Hoste: local, fresh and entirely homemade, with a hint of Italy. About us In the Gard region of France, there's a small area that looks a lot like Tuscany, with vineyards as far as the eye can see. Welcome to Domazan, a charming village of 930 inhabitants nestled between Nîmes (30 km) and Avignon (20 km). The village boasts no fewer than 21 private wineries! The village boasts the prestigious Côtes du Rhône label and the Signargues AOC. And to top it all off, the Pont du Gard, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is just around the corner. Le Bistrot de l'Hoste is above all a family affair. Originally from Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, Pascale joined Domazan three decades ago. Her passion for cooking was passed on to her at an early age by her Italian grandmothers, who taught her the secrets of authentic flavors and traditional dishes, as well as by a whole family of restaurateurs and enthusiasts for excellent gastronomy. The name Bistrot de l'Hoste is in fact a tender tribute to her mother, who ran a guest house. In other words, sharing is an integral part of Pascale's DNA. Today, the café-restaurant has become a veritable meeting place for the villagers. Winegrowers gather here at dawn to share a coffee, while the counter gradually fills up with construction workers, old-timers and travelers passing through. Here, people chat, laugh, gossip and, above all, enjoy good food and good times together. Pascale has passed on her passion to her son Thomas, who grew up in Domazan. After a rich experience abroad and in prestigious French addresses, he returns to his roots with his partner Anastasia, who warmly welcomes you. Behind the counter, he turns the bistro into a living space where he creates original cocktails: the refreshing "Italicus sour" - with a hint of Italian bergamot -, the exotic "Caïpirinha", the sparkling house creation, his "Cocktail bistrot" - basil, yellow lemon juice, house raspberry coulis, Vodka, Perrier - or the most gourmand, the "Expresso Martini" - Vodka, Kahlua, coffee liqueur, Baileys, coffee-. Behind the piano, he delights the taste buds. Like the ambience, the cuisine is family-style, generous and entirely homemade, featuring fresh seasonal vegetables. Undeniably Italian-influenced, healthy and tasty. The daily specials change daily, while the menu is renewed every month. Among the specialties, we recommend the semi-cooked tuna in virgin sauce, with tomatoes and local olive oil, accompanied by snow peas, peas and carrots. You can also try the tender, flavorful onglet de boeuf, or the genuine Caesar salad prepared according to the rules of the art, with home-made breaded chicken that will delight fans of authentic recipes. Mère Maury's ravioles from Romans, stuffed with summer white truffles or basil, are a pure delight. Gourmets won't be outdone by the desserts: strawberries in elegant pavlova or simply with homemade whipped cream, artisanal Ardèche ice creams... The bistro's specialty: lavender ice cream, garnished with pine nuts and lavender honey, with a light whipped cream (no need to tell you it's homemade, right?). The bistro has not one, but two shaded terraces! The first, in front of the bistro, is typically Provençal, with its pretty fountain shaded by plane trees. Facing the town hall, you can feel the soul of the village as you listen to the gentle murmur of the water... La dolce vita is just around the corner. The second is on the charming patio. Here, you can enjoy a quiet glass of wine, or savour a meal while soaking up the Italian atmosphere radiating from the ochre walls. The completely renovated interior features superb moldings, in-house lighting and a unique creation: a wall of 3,000 corks by Thomas, which sits behind the bar. The family has preserved and rejuvenated the 200-year-old counter, recalling the charm of the bistros of yesteryear. The little extra: concert evenings once a month. If you're also a fan of karaoke and like to sing along, there's a special evening for you once a month. Every first Sunday of the month, a delicious brunch is served from 11am to 4pm. An address you won't soon forget, as much for the quality of its food as for the generosity of its welcome.

Bed and breakfast Le Mas Cothy

Our guest house is an 18th-century farmhouse located in a residential area of Roquemaure, in the heart of the vineyards and cradle of the Côtes du Rhône. Right in the heart of the Côtes du Rhône vineyards, from which it originated, Roquemaure is located on the banks of the river, offering quick access to numerous hiking trails, with Mont Ventoux in the background. Our house is a former 18th-century farmhouse, separated into two separate dwellings. A private part, previously restored, and a part dedicated to guests, which my wife and I have renovated and decorated. It comprises three bedrooms on two floors and a shared kitchen. Outside, there's a 30m² terrace and a 600m² garden with an 8x4m swimming pool and Jacuzzi. It's located in a quiet residential area in the village of Roquemaure, 16km from Avignon, ideally situated between the Vaucluse and Gard regions to discover the tourist highlights of the South of France. The village has a rich history, thanks in particular to its geographical location on the banks of the Rhône and its proximity to Avignon. As a hub for wine transportation, it was here that the Côtes du Rhône appellation was created. Today, the remains of the château and the collegiate church bear witness to this prestigious past. The latter is still important today, as it houses the relics of Saint Valentine, which are the subject of an annual votive celebration attracting large numbers of devotees. Its baroque organ is listed as a historic monument. In addition to the region's many tourist and cultural attractions, the wine industry shapes the landscape. We're close to the famous vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Tavel, as well as Lirac, Laudun and Chusclan, lesser-known but well worth a visit and tasting for wine lovers. What's more, the wineries regularly organize activities focusing on wine, local gastronomy and the Gallo-Roman history that has left us so many vestiges.
