ArrayYour Experience Explore the architectural manifesto that is the Villa Cavrois, designed by architect and figure of the modernist current, Robert Mallet-Stevens. This emblematic piece of his work was built for a textile manufacturer, Paul Cavrois, and his family in the early 1930s. This villa was dubbed a historic monument in 1990, and the restoration program began well into the early 200s. What makes it so appealing is its imposing proportions, the separation of two symmetrical wings, the lack of ornamental decor in the villa, and the escalation of the rooftop terraces. Not to mention, the modern touch post-renovation that included central heating, elevators, and the use of new industrial materials and techniques. You will explore the vast living area, the intriguing façades, the stunning terrace, and of course, the 72-meter-long water mirror, reflecting the beauty of Villa Cavrois quite nicely!

Located in a meadow, this is the house in which Benoit-Joseph Labre was born on March 26 1748. His life as a prilgrim led him to Rome. He was beatified in 1860 and canonized in 1881.

This launching ramp shoots some 30 flying bombs from 16th of June to September 1944. Target of allied bombing, it caused the destruction of a large part of the village. A communal initiative made it possible to rebuild it partially in 2011.

Identified Casualties: 1096 Historical Information The cemetery was not begun until April 1918 when the 1st and 4th Canadian Casualty Clearing Stations came to Pernes, driven back by the German advance. In May, the 6th and 22nd Clearing Stations arrived and in August, they were joined by the 13th. Almost all the burials were made by these units, but a few of the graves were brought into the cemetery after the Armistice. There are now 1,078 First World War burials in this cemetery and 18 graves from the Second World War, all of the latter dating from 3-4 September 1944. There are also 3 non Commonwealth burials here.

Built in 1388 as a reward to the people of Béthune for their loyalty to the French Crown, this is the last vestige of the town's medieval history. It was destroyed by bombing in 1918 leaving only the 16th part intact. The Belfry of Béthune is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has bee classified as a Historic Monument since 1862

The source of the Lys river is in the small village of Lisbourg. The 214 kilometre river is canalised in Aire-sur-la-Lys. From Armentières to Halluin it forms the boundary between France and Belgium, where it finally runs into the Escaut. The source of the Lys can be reached from the Lisbourg-Laires road. Tourist facilities were opened in June 2007 at the source of the Lys by local representatives, with the backing of the Community of Communes and the Lys sans Frontières Association. The name "La Lys" probably comes from the French word "lisse" (smooth) because of its crystal-clear waters. The source begins at 110 metres altitude in a small crater filled with water (with blue reflects). According to local legends, the blue colour disappears in bad weather. In the past, the inhabitants of Lisbourg thought that the river began in several different places. During the night of the 11th of February 1984 the river left its historic source and sprang up not far away raising a local road and creating a 60 cm geyser. The caving-in under ground that led to this extraordinary reappearance has left a crater measuring approximately 12 metres wide at the site of the original source.
