Le Domaine de Champe: Discover Bussang in the Vosges

In Bussang: 3 km loop circuit. Duration: 1 to 1 ½ hour. Start at the tourist office in Bussang.

Surrounded by mountains and fresh air, the Voie Verte des Hautes Vosges is a multi-activity trail on the 53 km of the former railway tracks of the Moselle-Moselotte Valleys. With family or friends, share funny time, with tandem, rollerblades, ... in free access. Free map at the tourist offices or downloadable here as well as the GPX tracks.

Marked FFC trail starting from the Tourist office : Track 9 La Bouloie-Séchenat - difficulty level Red - length of the trail 17 km - elevation + 350 m. Route in a loop, you will pass close to Source of the Moselle and the shelters: Chalet des Founès, Chalet des Evaux, Chalet du Séchenat. The GPx track is available for download above.

Access : Centre of Bussang, Tourist office. Departure : Car park at the tourist office. Length : 9.5km or 6.5km. Duration : 4h or 2h3h. Elevation : +554 m or +328m. Marks : green point - yellow point - yellow diagonal cross - red triangle - green point. From the Tourist Office, take the Rue de Lamerey which goes up to the Bouloie and turn quickly left into Rue du Breuil that goes along the cemetery. Follow this road for almost 450 m. Then take the path marked with the green point on the right along a house for 100 m and join the Rue du Chazal. Go to the left down the road for about 100 m, before taking the path on the right marked with the green point "Rouge Gazon par Meuselotte, Roches du Sabbat, Neufs Bois". Go along the place called Meuselotte, before arriving on a road where there are 2 farms. At the second farm, turn right on the green point marked path "Rouge Gazon par les Neufs Bois" which climbs and crosses a park. The climb is gradual on about 800 meters. Then continue on the wider path to the right for 500 metres. At the next crossroads is the cross “Croix Grosjean”. Variant: possibility to short the hike, by taking the "chemin de Lameraie" marked blue-white-blue rectangle that leads straight on to the chalet des Evaux and take the path that goes down following the red triangle up to the bench (for the end of the hike, see the last paragraph).Continue straight ahead on the green disc way that climbs for about 1 km (beware of several ‘false paths’ that branch off to the right). When the track bends sharply to the right, continue straight ahead, taking the small path opposite you (green disc) and skirting the Roches du Sabbat. When you reach a wide track, follow the yellow disc to the right marked ‘Chalet des crêtes - Noiregoutte’. You will pass close to the Chalet des Crêtes. 200 m after the chalet, take the small path on the right that descends with the yellow sign ‘sentier Evrard’. You will come across the first path that you will follow for 20 m to the right. Follow the yellow signposted path down to the left. At the crossroads with a wider path, follow this path to the right for about 150 m and pick up the yellow signposted ‘Bussang’ path below. At the next crossroads, take the red triangle path, which climbs steeply for 200 m. You will be overlooking the statue of Sainte Barbe. At the bench, descend to the statue following the red triangle marked path. Keep your eyes open and you might find the statuette of a virgin hiding on a tree along the path ... Cross the pasture. Below the statue, always follow the red triangle marks until you reach the trail with the green point marked “Bussang”. Return to the Tourist Office by taking the same path as you took on the beginning of the hike, green point marked "Bussang". The 2 Gpx tracks and the sheet with the route are downloadable here above. An easy city tour in Bussang. Kids will play explorers during the walking trip which is like a treasure hunt. They will answer to the questions on the sheet and find out the password. 3 levels are available and each child has therefore a form adapted to his age : for 4-6 , 7-9 or 9-12 years. What is a vertical kilometre trail ? 1 x 600 m + 1 x 400 m ascents to reach 1000 m elevation, thus the vertical kilometre. Please note that you are on a protected natural area, please respect the periods of practice: July, August and September. How doing the ascent of this kilometre ? Start: Bussang Tourist Office, follow the KV1 marks (600m elevation), then descend to reach the start of the remaining 400m and follow the KV2 marks to go up along the former Bouloie ski slope to the Tête de la Bouloie over a length of more than 7 km to reach the vertical kilometre. Created in 1895, the "Théâtre du Peuple" (folk theater) is first of all the brainchild of Maurice Pottecher, a humanistic poet born in Bussang, who was convinced that art should unite all citizens, beyond their social and cultural differences, under an unique motto " through Art, for Humanity". This theater, unique in France because of its aura, its longevity and originality (it is usual nowadays, as well as in the past, to mingle amateurs with professional actors) can be considered as the first step in the great adventure of "popular theater". The church was built in 1733. The church bell tower is the third and dates back to 1894, as indicated under the porch. The two former bell towers were destroyed, the first by fire and the second by lightning. The current one, which seems to have shrunk, was intentionally built this way, as the Municipal Council of the time did not want to risk erecting a third spire. The church is dedicated to Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners among others. The high altar located in the choir was ordered by Father Morizot and made with copper from the mines of Bussang. It is a Voltaic pantograph representing the burial. In the choir, magnificent stalls and an abbey pulpit remind us that the woodwork comes from the abbey of Moyenmoutier. Dismantled during the French Revolution, stored in the attics of the prefecture of Epinal, they were purchased by the municipality of Bussang for its church. It is rare to see such large Stations of the Cross. They are not signed, but probably come from a monks' school. The church of Bussang has an organ which is registrate for protection as a national heritage site in 2013 as well as its altar, its stalls, its stations of the Cross and its lustres. This instrument was built by organ builder Jean-Nicolas JEANPIERRE in 1838. It is an interesting example of early 19th century Vosges organ building, and as such, of great interest to the organological heritage of the region. It is composed of many pieces, including 1 keyboard of 56 notes. The church is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. except on Sundays.

The Théâtre du Peuple de Bussang is a unique place of creation in France which was born in 1895 from a humanist and artistic utopia. For 130 years, this atypical theater has kept alive the ideal of its founder, Maurice Pottecher, summed up by the motto "Through art, for humanity" inscribed on the stage pediment. Classified as a Historic Monument, this theater whose back stage opens onto the forest offers a highlight every summer bringing together two major shows from the classical and contemporary repertoire, one of which has mixed, since its creation, professional and amateur actors. Workshops, play courses, educational activities, shows inside and outside the walls, hosting artistic residencies and guided tours take place throughout the year. Guided tours are offered every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and on weekdays during school holidays. Located at 879 meters, the Croix de Fresse recalls that at this place, in 1814, 4 Grognards of Napoleon 1st died while defending this pass against the Cossacks. Nearby is the Chalet de la Croix de Fresse which offers breathtaking views on Bussang. It is easily accessible on foot from the Larcenaire ski resort, on the heights of Bussang, by a path marked with a green rectangle. The sheet of this hike is downlodable here.

At The Marie source, there is a small pavilion where you can taste the natural sparkling mineral water, once recommended for treating anaemia, for free. The Marie source is the last existing reminder of Bussang’s past as a thermal resort.

The cascade de l’Ours waterfall is situated at an altitude of 850m at La Bouloie, overlooking Bussang, not far from the Roche de l’Ours climbing spot.You can reach it on the forest road La Bouloie, this road turns into a sledge slope in winter and is closed to traffic..

During the liberation of the village in 1944, two air bombs strucked the church, all the windows were broken. All, except the church window with Saint “Barbe”, which was miraculously spared ...The inhabitants of Bussang, at the instigation of the priest "Vaché", expressed this oath :"If Bussang is spared, we will erect a statue of Saint “Barbe” on the highest mountain of Bussang to show our gratefulness". It turned out that Bussang had not suffered too much. After the war, the inhabitants gathered copper, bronze and other materials to make this statue.The inauguration took place on 3rd October 1948. The Statue is only reachable per foot! A hiking trail leads you from the village centre to the statue, it climbs a little but the view on the village is worth the effort! The source of the Moselle river: the Moselle takes its source at the base of the Drumont mountain, at 735m, on the western slopes of the crystalline Vosges, and flows into the Rhine at Koblenz, with only 278km between Bussang and Koblenz as the crow flies. The source is marked by a granite monument which was erected on 23 May 1965. It is located above the Col de Bussang.

The Montbel Bridge is a very special infrastructure located in the forest at an altitude of 903 metres. It can be reached in several ways: from the village of Les Grandes Tailles via the forest path on the left, from the sectory of La Grande Goutte by following the red ring signpost via the path of the Two Chapels, or from sectory Les Neufs-Bois by passing the three ponds and taking the yellow ring signpost in the direction of the Three Musketeers. Built in several stages: It was built in 1937 under the direction of the ONF (Office National des Forêts) by the deputy inspector de Montbel. Its construction was made possible because the material was brought in from the Grandes Tailles sectory using motorised trolleys. The construction was carried out by unemployed labourers who had to work for four hours in order to be entitled to meals. The bridge was built too close to the mountain. In 1945, when the forestry workers' oxen gave way to motorised machines, the path had to be widened as the lorries tore off the railings when turning. The railings were replaced in 2006 and earthworks were carried out on both sides of the bridge to improve the passage and manoeuvring of loggers. The plaque on the bridge was renovated in 2019 by the Creusot factories in Le Thillot (cleaning, painting of the inscriptions).

Located in Le Ménil, this old oratory is accessible by foot, especially by the path leading to La Tête des Champs, which is marked with a diagonal blue cross. You can approach the chapel by car until you cross the path leading to it after 600 metres. GPS departure: 47°55'06.5" N / 6°49'18" E GPS chapel: 47°54'49" N / 6°49'17" E (altitude of 926 m) The chapel is located on a rocky mass overlooking the surrounding area. This small square building is placed on a masonry base. The walls are protected by sheet metal plates painted blue. The pyramidal roof is also made of sheet metal, but painted red brown. On the facade, there are 2 shutters closed by a lock. They open Open inwards and protect a wooden niche. Various statuettes of the Virgin are installed behind a glass window, including one from La Salette.

Overlooking the village of Le Ménil from the top of its 997 meters, the Tête des Champs, on which an orientation table was erected, offers a wonderfull panorama view on the Moselle Valley to the South and the Moselotte Valley to the North. The Chapelle de la Salette is just below this summit. When the flock of sheep is between the Tête des Champs and the Col de Sécheneux, turn back, as the guard dog (the patou) is aggressive.
