Contrexeville Camping: Nature and Discoveries Await

With this trail, you will discover one of the most important places in the history of Lorraine : Châtenois. In the 11th century, the first Duke of Lorraine, Gerard of Alsace, had a fortified castle perched on the upper part of the town. His wife, Hedwige of Namur, founded a Benedictine priory in 1069, which still dominates the landscape. There are many calvaries along the path, which explains the surname of "Petite Bretagne Lorraine" (Little Brittany in Lorraine) given to this territory. Marking : blue ring

This walk, along the Mouzon, will allow you to discover the limestone plateau and the richness of the flora and fauna. It is a protected natural site of European interest, which is called dry calcaerous grassland of the east coast. Among the dry grasslands of the Western Vosges, this is one of those with the most obvious southern aspect. Overlooking the Mouzon the Anger valley, you will discover there the limestone formation of the Natura 2000 network.

This trail helps you discover the thermal history of the Western Vosges. The village of Dolaincourt has a small sulphurous, sodic and arsenic thermal spring, which has been exploited since the middle of the 19th century, in a small yellown wooden building. This small cabin was used as a refreshment room and as a bottling plant until 1914. The village of Vouxey has a beautiful church dating from the 16th century.

This trail is perfect for nature lovers. From the "Maison Forestière du Rendez-Vous" (forest house), you will be able to admire remarkable trees along the path. Amongst others, you will see the Lothar oak, the Douglas-firs and the famous giant sequoia, made remarkable by its height. A stop will be made at the Malovoye fountain, whose name comes from "mal" (wrong) and "avoi", which means "wrong path". During the spring, this spring allows amphibians to come breed.

Throughout this walk, you will be able to admire various landscapes. You will be amazed by the diversity of its landsacpes and of its flora and fauna : rocky cliffs, rivers, woods and caves. The richness of the village of Rebeuville will be revealed to you in particular with the important presence of calvaries, which is explained by the existence of workshops in the 15th and 16th centuries, which undoubtedly benefited from rich and varied influences.

Botanical trail Starting from the Museum of French string instrument and bow making, this country trail will take you through a beautiful forest of deciduous trees. You will pass through the village of Bazoilles and Ménil, before entering the woods again. A wood where you’ll be able to explore the botanical trail of the Malaumont woods. Then, you will move on to the INRA experimental farm, where innovative ways of raising dairy cows are tested in real-life conditions. The circuit will allow you discover the village of Poussay and its famous agricultural fair, whose origin dates back to the 17th century. Starting from the picturesque village of Rollainville, labelled "Village fleuri" (Towns and villages in bloom) and awarded "4 flowers", discover the vast forest of Neufeys where history and natural environments intermingle. It is flanked by two valleys at the bottom of which the Frézelle flows to the west and the Sermone stream flows to the east. In this forest, you will find mainly beech trees and a giant sequoia.

This trail between Rollainville and Fruze is called "La Frézelle" as you will walk along this stream for a while. It enables you to admire the sites classified "Sensitive Natural Area" in the Western Vosges. The images are jostling, in a few metres, the landscape can change quickly. It will be a treat for nature lovers. Breathe, look around, recharge your batteries !

This little museum contains a number of rare collections. It tells the history of Vittel, from its days as a rural village to its development thanks to the trend for “taking the waters” that began in 1854. Numerous items and photos show the changes in a village previously typical of Lorraine, as it becomes a small town with some remarkable buildings. The museum also illustrates changes in spa-based health care, the bottling of the mineral water and advertising through the years, with a dozen highly-representative tableaux.

The Romanesque priory church (depicted on one of the stained glass) was demolished to make room for the current Saint Peter’s Church of Grillot type (1843). It was renovated inside and out in 1993. It follows a very old Romanesque church dating from the foundation of the Priory (1069). The attention can be focused on the following points: Statues of Saint Anthony, of the education of the Virgin Mary, of Saint John the Baptist dating from the 16th century. The big rosaries could represent a confraternity of the Rosary founded in 1535 in La Neuveville-sous-Châtenois. Fragment of a retable on which the figures were to be painted.

At the top of a hill, the Priory remains the last witness of the glorious past of Châtenois. Wife of Gérard of Alsace, Count of Châtenois and first Duke of Lorraine, Hadwide de Namur founded a Benedictine Priory dedicated to Saint Peter and dependent on the Abbey of Toul around 1069. Several times destroyed and rebuilt, this imposing building formed a main building with two wings that joined the church. Today only one wing remains. Adjacent to the church and dating from the last reconstruction after a fire in the 18th century, this part was still used as a presbytery until recently. Now, throughout the year, the Priory offers various events, permanent and temporary exhibitions. In addition, a walk in the Haut Bourg district of Châtenois will allow you to discover an incredible view of the surrounding countryside.

Châtenois has a glorious past : it became the first capital of the Duchy of Lorraine when, in 1048, the emperor gave to Gerard of Alsace the title of hereditary Duke of Lorraine. He who is also called Gérard of Chatenoy (after an ancestral castle near Neufchâteau) is the ancestor of the line of the following Dukes of Lorraine. He also gave birth to the biggest imperial and royal dynasty of Europe : the Habsburg-Lorraine. Even though the castle, located on the heights of the village in a place called "Haut-Bourg", was destroyed in 1634, there are still several traces of it. The main building that bears witness to the distant 11th century is however located below, between the "Haut-Bourg" and the village that it overlooks : the Priory, founded in 1069 by the Duchess Hedwige of Namur. Located near the St. Peter's Church, which was rebuilt in the 19th cenutry on the site of a primitive Romanesque church, the priory was recently renovated thanks to the "Amis du Prieuré et du Patrimoine de Châtenois" association. Its tour is rich in history and in mysteries, in particular those of the never found graves of Hedwige de Namur and of Theodor II, son of Gerard, Duke of Lorraine, and founder of Neufchâteau. Châtenois is rich in history, it is also called the "Petite Bretagne Lorraine" (Little Brittany in Lorraine), because of its high concentration of crosses and calvaries. It is also rich in gastronomy, with its famous "Pâté Lorrain", traditionally celebrated each year at the popular Easter fair. The "Association des amateurs et producteurs du pâté lorrain de Châtenois" ensures the promotion and reputation of this culinary speciality, for which an application for a Protected Geographical Indication was recently filed.

On the place du Souvenir, behind the town hall, you will find the war memorial of Châtenois. Commemorating the memory of the major world conflicts of the 20th century, this monument was inaugurated on the 5th of August 1923. On a granite base is set a polished granite stele, on which are engraved the names of the soldiers “morts pour la France”, meaning soldiers who died during a conflict, in service of their country. You will also see the arms of Lorraine, the arms of the town of Châtenois, as well as the inscription: “A ses enfants morts pour la Patrie la ville de Châtenois reconnaissante” (To its children who died for their country the town of Châtenois is grateful). The stele is topped by a statue made of white marble depicting a harmed soldier dragging a flag. The work is the result of a project by Charles Brossard, an architect from Neufchâteau; the stele was made by the sculptor Eugène Perrin, from Pouxeux and the statue was modelled by an Italian artist. There are now 43 names for World War I and 33 names for World War II on this war memorial. In Châtenois also, next to the gendarmerie (one of two police forces in France), you will find a commemorative plaque evoking the sad event of the 12th of May 1944, day of a roundup during which several gendarmes engaged in the Resistance were arrested and then deported.

The small village of Jainvillotte, at the south of Neufchâteau, has a church worthy of interest. Dedicated to Saint Michael, the church was built in the 12th century with additions from the 13th century.

As soon as you arrive, your eye is drawn to two superb 16th-century altarpieces, embedded above the entrance door: a sculpted testimony to the faith and art of yesteryear. Inside, the emotion continues with a delicate 15th-century Madonna and Child, accompanied by statues of St. Nicholas and St. Barbara. The elegantly crafted pulpit completes this spiritual setting. To the right of the church, don't miss the 16th-century cemetery cross. On its shaft, the outraged Christ is striking in its intensity. The calvary, although partially erased by time - the Virgin and St. John having disappeared - retains a touching Virgin and Child on the reverse, the ultimate call to contemplation.
