This river rises near Pétillat/Lépinas in the commune of Peyrabout, canton d'Ahun in Creuse, at an altitude of 684 m in the Massif de la Courolle. The river retains its fast-flowing character as it crosses the Haute-Vienne, despite its gentler gradients. It crosses the canton of Bessines from east to west. It continues its course, flowing into the Creuse near La Roche-Posay (Vienne), some 20 km east of Châtellerault, after a journey of around 200 km. It then flows into the Vienne and Loire rivers. A quote from Régine Deforges: "There's a corner of Poitou where a river flows which, in turn, takes on the appearance of a torrent, then struts a little further on like a lazy Loire. It's called the Gartempe".

The 2 picnic tables are located near the Rimaury stream. This natural site, just a few hundred meters from the town center, is a haven of peace. Wooden footbridges lead to a narrow path lined with low dry-stone walls... A change of scenery guaranteed!

Built in 1931 in the traditional Limousin masonry style. The washerwomen used to go there to wash their clothes, using their beater. This space was an outward extension of the women?s domestic social space, and meant they no longer had to walk down to the Mas stream. Washing was done at the tubs and rinsing at the bottom of the washhouse.

This cultural site presents the painter Suzanne Valadon, who was born in Bessines-sur-Gartempe in 1865 and died in Paris in 1938. Visitors will discover views of the artist's native village and the Butte de Montmartre. In Paris, she rubbed shoulders with great painters such as Puvis de Chavanne, Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas... Maria the model became Suzanne the painter. The Espace also evokes her son Maurice Utrillo, another world-famous painter. The tour ends with a painter's studio, faithfully recreated as it was in Suzanne Valadon's day.

Just a few hundred metres from the village, a 2 km family stroll through a typically Limousin landscape in the Vallon du Rimaury (a tributary of the Gartempe) reveals a well-presented vernacular heritage. Low dry-stone walls (to demarcate plots of land) rehabilitated by Chantiers des Chemins Jacquaires, heel path (to guide cattle in single file from one field to another), flying staircase, plank bridge (stone slabs to cross over the stream). A line of large oak trees, the Rimaury stream and a signposted interpretation trail (designed by PALOMA) educate walkers about the region?s flora and fauna (endangered fruit trees, local plants). Wooden furniture (benches, tables, fences, bridges) blends seamlessly into the landscape. An adjoining arboretum completes this beautiful ensemble.

Former inn built in the early 17th century. It was run by the widow Guimbaud, a distant cousin of Madeleine Valadon (mother of painter Suzanne Valadon), who worked there as a linen maid.) Since 1840, this guesthouse had welcomed travelers passing through. The adjoining barn was reserved for horses.
