A land steeped in history, it was also a stronghold of the Resistance during the Second World War, feared by the Germans who called it "Little Russia". At the bend of a path on the edge of a meadow or in the undergrowth, the landscape reveals a pretty viewpoint over the countryside, a monument like the Tour d'Echizadour, a roadside cross, a fountain or an old mill... Let yourself be surprised by the tranquility of this secret territory.

Leaving from Châteauneuf-la-Forêt, this first 24 km stage of the Entre Combade et Briance loop takes you over hill and dale to Lac de Sussac. On April 6, 1944, the "Brehmer" division was deployed in the area to capture Jews and Resistance fighters. More than 50 people were arrested, including forty Jews and several members of the Resistance, who were parked in the village hall. They were catalogued, classified and interrogated. Resistance fighters were tortured. Then all were deported. This stele is a stele of hope against the oblivion of the victims of the Shoah. The work is by sculptor Marc PETIT, a fountain in memory of the deportees of Châteauneuf-la-Forêt, human faces, two symbols on the stele: water and nature. Tortured, suffering human faces, but water, the source of life, takes over. It was inaugurated on June 25, 2006, in Place du Colisée.

The cache is located in the forest of Châteauneuf-la-Forêt, and is known as the "three horses" cache; this cache, rehabilitated according to the testimonies of Resistance fighters, was a constituent part of Colonel Georges Guingouin's F.T.P.F (Francs.Tireurs.Partisans.Français) maquis. Guingouin's cache was occupied in 1943 from March to autumn.

The commune is unique in having 3 churches: the église du bourg, a former Templar commandery with a defensive character, situated at the top of a hill; the église de Saint-Priest, built in the 13th century, then rebuilt after a fire in the 15th century, which has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1977 (church put up for sale after the Revolution, now privately owned); the église de Villevaleix: in 1291, the priory of Villevaleix belonged to the women's abbey of Bonnesaignes, it is now transformed and cannot be visited.

Graciation course or active reserve, managed by APPMA La Maulde. Only open to holders of an annual or temporary fishing permit. Trout and grayling must be released immediately after capture. Only artificial lures and fly fishing techniques, using a single hook without barb or with crushed barb, are authorized. Natural bait is prohibited. This circuit starts at the RD16 bridge and runs for 1.5 km.
