Bridge near the small canal

The coal mines were extremely important from the 17th century.

Buildings from the former 17th century Presbytery were restored and transformed into the town hall in 2007 and "Les Digitales" Art Centre in 2011. The Art Centre is a place for activities and exhibits. It displays different models of farming machinery from the collection of Mr Sevestre, a passionate farmer from Caden, and holds a museum presenting farming activities from yesterday and today with interviews from local farmers.

It was restored in the 18th century by the rector of Caden, Jean-Louis de la Houssaye. The date "1756" is written over the side door. It is one of the six friar chapels of Caden. The inside is decorated with 21th century frescos painted by a local artist representing landscapes of the surrounding countryside.

The first chapel was built by the monastic community of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem during the 12th century and under the control of Carentoir like the chapels of Gorvello, Molac and Guerno. It was restored in the 18th century and decorated with a Classical-style pediment on the main door.

The traveller may be astonished, moved or meditate in front of this majesty. It proudly dominates this valley, at the bottom of which, the river Ouin, runs alongside, meanders and separates, sometimes the Maine et Loire, the Vendée or the Deux Sèvres. At the height of the trilogy, the parish itself was, over the centuries, under the dependence of three dioceses: Maillezais, La Rochelle and Poitiers! »

Both the 16th century fountain and washhouse are made of regular granite surrounded by a small stone wall. The fountain looks like a small temple sitting large columns and topped with a domed roof. A small alcove was built for the Saint's statue.

In a bourrine (a traditional marsh dwelling with a thatched roof) built in 1903, Kathleen will introduce you to the local produce that her husband David cooks with passion. The chef and his brigade work with raw produce, as local as possible, with their many partners selected from the short supply chain. Smoked meats, fillings and desserts are all made on the premises, guaranteeing freshness and great flavours on your plate. David uses a Kamado barbecue from Japan. It is used for cooking and smoking fish, meat and vegetables. He can cook on a grill, stone or charcoal. Enjoy recipes from the Maraîchines region, such as frogs' legs, eels, caillebotte and Vendée brioche for dessert. The restaurant has a lobster tank, which is available à la carte in two varieties. The authentic decor with its fireplace, beams and market garden furniture will take you back in time. The restaurant can be privatised for family or group meals.
