In the heart of the Tarn Valley. Along this heritage trail, discover the peninsula of Ambialet, its churches, its village and its Priory. Around a schistose needle, the Tarn makes a long loop of 3 km. When the river seems to turn back, the peninsula of Ambialet is only about thirty metres wide. This unique site, which was for more than two centuries the most important stronghold of the Albigensian region, still bears the traces of a prestigious past. This tour will help you discover the various monuments and remains of Ambialet. From the old monastery, at the top of the promontory, you will have a spectacular view of the isthmus.

The beginning of the trail takes you along the banks of the Tarn. You will enjoy the movement of the river and the sound of the water. In summer, fishermen, canoeists and hikers will be part of the scenery. A little further on, the remains of the Trincat Mill. Along the way, you will come across huts that bear witness to an ancient habitat used by men and livestock. Through paths and meadows, you will reach the top of the plateau where you will discover landscapes as far as the eye can see. This hike will take you from the Sérénac plateau to the Tarn valley. It forms a loop around the Méridienne verte. A few heritage features mark out its route. t the start, on your right, you can see the Albigensian plain in the distance. During your walk, you will cross agricultural areas, oak and chestnut woods. In Pécotte, a small place in the commune where two farms are located for market gardening, you will see above all the "bac de Pécotte". It was one of the links between the two banks of the Tarn. It was put into service in 1880. Its activity ceased in 1960. Every year, on the third weekend of July, a festival is organised around this ferry. You will then go along the Tarn before reaching the high plateau where you can discover beautiful landscapes towards Alban, Assac, Valence d'Albigeois...

The landscapes of the Villefranchois are composed of wide valleys and beautiful plateaus. The climate is rather temperate, Mediterranean under the influence of the Autan wind, Atlantic under the dominant west winds. The path known as "Calle" will take you in turn along the banks of the Assou, to Calle, then onto the plateau, to "la Sigaudié" where a superb panoramic view of Villefranche and its surrounding countryside awaits you. You will go back down to the stream, to the Moulin de Bonnal. The Toulouse-Lautrec museum is located in one of the most beautiful corners of Albi: the Berbie Palace. The Palace is one of the Episcopal City’s major sites with World Heritage status. The museum is recognised internationally for the works of this artist from Albi. TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, A UNIQUE COLLECTION IN THE WORLD The world’s most important public collection of the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, including 31 posters by the lithograph painter, is to be found in Albi. There are also no fewer than 219 paintings, 563 drawings and 183 lithographs displayed in the museum. Early works, major portraits, paintings of brothels, prints from the world of entertainment, advertisements and later works are presented there, giving this museum an exceptional collection. Each stage of the production is represented, highlighting his gift for observation, his talent as a draughtsman and his quality for capturing significant detail. The 11th century chapel on the top of the peninsula, built of schist, is a very pure and harmonious example of Romanesque art. The polychrome wooden statue of Our Lady of the Oder in the chapel dates from the 17th century. Built in the second half of the 11th century, it was served by the Benedictine monks of the priory until the Wars of Religion. After these wars, it remained practically abandoned until the middle of the 17th century. At that time, it underwent major repairs. The statue of the Virgin Mary, obviously in the Louis XV style, seems to date from this period of repair. From 1802, the church, which had survived the Revolution without much damage, found its Virgin, who had been hidden in a nearby farm. On the path leading to the church there is a remarkable Oder tree which, according to legend, was brought back from the Holy Land by a crusader.

In the Middle Ages, Ambialet became the seat of the Viscounty of Trencavel, rivals of the Counts of Toulouse, and was then occupied by Simon de Monfort during the crusade against the Albigensians. The Counts of Albi built a fortress of which some ruins remain. On the road to Albi, 100 metres after the hotel de la Parenthèse, on the left, take a fairly steep path (not accessible to pushchairs, people with reduced mobility or with walking difficulties). The climb lasts 10-15 minutes, at the top of the rocky fault, enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the peninsula of Ambialet!

The church of St Gilles, a former parish church with a choir carved into the rock, was restored in 1994 and is used as an exhibition hall for paintings and sculptures from May to September. The Church of St Gilles is one of the three churches of Ambialet. Anchored on the rock, it overlooks the river. A former parish church, it was built in the 11th century. It was dedicated to one of the most popular saints of the Middle Ages, Saint Gilles, a hermit in the forests of Gaul. The counts of Toulouse, originally from Saint-Gilles du Gard, venerated him particularly. Several times burned and destroyed, since the Albigensian War and during the Wars of Religion, it was recently restored to serve as an exhibition hall. It is about 12 metres long and 10 metres wide, and provides space for about forty large paintings. The lighting has been adapted. The choir, carved into the rock face, and the pointed vault, highlight the paintings and sculptures. Above the church, the bell tower perched on a platform rests on the remains of a Roman fort. Behind the bell tower, a staircase carved into the rock leads to a pier to the other side of the river. Inside, you can read a translation of the charter in the langue d'oc granted to the inhabitants of Ambialet by Roger Trencavel, lord of Ambialet, Albi and Carcassonne. Former Benedictine monastery located at the top of the Ambialet peninsula at 295 m altitude. The summit of the peninsula was occupied from very early on by a small monastery serving a church dedicated to the Virgin. In 1057, the Viscount of Albi donated the monastery and the church to Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint Victor in Marseille. These monks occupied the monastery without interruption for five centuries. After the Viscounty of Ambialet became part of the Kingdom of France, the monastery gradually declined in importance. In 1458, it came under the authority of the chapter of Montpellier and its prior became a sort of dean priest of the three parishes of Ambialet, Lacondamine and Courris, whose religious services were provided by the monks of the priory. The monastery was abandoned by the Benedictine monks at the time of the Wars of Religion and, until the Revolution, it and its outbuildings were no more than a distant benefit of the chapter of Montpellier, which made the parish priest of Ambialet collect the income. At the time of the Revolution, the priory's property passed to the commune of Ambialet. To this day, the Priory can only be visited during guided tours organised by the Tourist Office in July and August.
