You’ll be charmed by its Renaissance castle, listed as a historic monument and converted into a cultural exhibition centre (exhibitions from April to October), as well as by its 17th-century fountain. Leaving the village, the route takes you into the forest, where you can follow tracks and sunken paths to reach the hamlet of La Bessède, which overlooks the valley. Duration: 4 hours – Distance: 13 km This undulating trail, which is not particularly difficult, will take you through meadows and woods, and along the ridges overlooking the Gijou valley. Why not also explore the village of Lacaze and its 15th-century castle? The route winds through forests and sunken lanes, and from the ridges you can enjoy beautiful views over Lacaze and the Gijou valley. Along the way, you’ll also come across examples of rural heritage (hamlets, farms, drinking troughs, etc.), particularly in St Pierre de Combejac with its church and a steam engine. The castle is a cultural tourist attraction hosting exhibitions, artistic creations, performances and seminars. It is also open to visitors all year round, subject to opening hours and days. At the junction of the three valleys of the Agout, the Gijou and the Usclade stream, the regions of Sidobre, Montredonnais and the Lacaune mountains meet. Three valleys for fishing Three valleys mean three fishing spots. But what sort of fishing? Coarse fishing? That’s where the patience of the angler, sitting in their chair above a specific spot, comes into play. Casting? Apart from static methods such as live bait or sinker fishing, casting is a dynamic form of fishing. Unlike the previous method, you go out to meet the fish, casting as many times as possible. Fly fishing? This is a fishing technique with an air of elegance: beautiful, pleasant, harmonious movements. A way of catching fish that borders on poetry. Is it practicable here? Certainly, but without going overboard. Local anglers who fish this way only do so when it becomes ‘worthwhile’: in spring or summer.

Lacaze is also very popular with nature lovers and fishing enthusiasts. This magnificent little medieval village, listed as a "Petite cité de caractère", nestles in the Gijou valley in the Monts de Lacaune. Don't miss out on a guided tour of the castle in summer, or a group visit all year round by prior arrangement. On the way to Lacaze, we also recommend a short diversions to the "forgotten" hamlet of Camalière and the fortified chapel of St Jean del Frech. There is also a waterfall at St Michel de Léon.

Do you want to become a knight of Lacaze? We suggest you play a little game to discover the village and the castle. Don't forget to ask for your equipment, which will be lent to you free of charge. To show the lord of Lacaze that you can do it, you need to prove your observational skills. To do this, pick up the map of the tour you'll be doing at the castle reception desk. Put on your equipment (shield, sword and knight's chasuble) and follow the map as you make your way around the castle through the narrow streets of the village. Remember, you'll be asked a number of questions to sharpen your observational skills, so take a good look around you and take note of the answers. These answers will give you a password. Give it to the reception desk and you'll be given your knight's diploma.

Vabre, situated on the banks of the Gijou, has retained its mountain character with its granite-framed houses, its belfry and its restored wash houses. The village is unique in that it lies on the edge of the Sidobre massif and the Monts de Lacaune. A historic trail of around 2 km invites you to explore the historic village of Vabre, from the Middle Ages to the days of the Resistance, which led to the village being recognised as one of the “Villages of the Righteous” following the Second World War. From its earliest historical remains (the 13th-century Porte de l’Horloge) right up to the present day, Vabre has stood the test of time, bearing witness to the Wars of Religion (the 17th-century houses on Rue Vieille), the golden age of the spinning mills (the 19th and early 20th centuries) and the Maquis, particularly during the Second World War, when it played a very active role. During this dark period, the exemplary behaviour of the inhabitants, who hid and protected around a hundred Jews, has earned Vabre membership of the ‘Towns and Villages of the Righteous’ network since 2015 (in July and August, you can visit the Maquis Exhibition during the Tourist Information Office’s opening hours). Don’t miss the 14-stop historical trail to find out more. In 2018, the village was awarded the ‘village étoilé’ label for its energy-saving policy and efforts to reduce light pollution. The Sidobre granite quarries, masonry firms and many other businesses are based in the Craft Industry Zone and the Business Centre.
