Come to discover the fabulous story of the Morel torrent! During a fun hike, the story of this natural heritage is told to the walkers. In the prayers of the Tarentaise, it was said in the past: "My God, preserve me from the waters of the Morel, from Mandrin and his henchmen". Today the Morel is a peaceful mountain stream, one of the wonders of the Alps, according to connoisseurs. Along its banks, tourists and locals alike stroll to enjoy the coolness of its waterfalls and shady paths. However, for centuries, it was one of the most formidable torrents in Savoie. Men had to deploy ardour and ingenuity to protect themselves from the future ravages of this torrent. Have you heard of the secret weapon, a colossal 1 km long structure that men built to try to overcome the Morel? Some of them lost their lives to protect their own! This is the incredible story that you will discover through the account of Pierre and his grandfather Augustin. The story of a torrent that has become a wonder, and was once the scourge of the Aigueblanche Valleys! This "told" path offers 10 "discovery stations" with commentary. Respectful of the environment, the Communauté de Commune des Vallées d'Aigueblanche wanted a site in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings: eco-design of the educational material (interpretation aids, signposting, etc.) and the leisure furniture (tables, benches, etc.). From the Bellecombe bridge walk 500m with a 30m difference in height to the picnic area. From the picnic area to the waterfall, walk 800m with a difference in height of 80m.

An accessible route without major technical difficulty to explore the hills of Aigueblanche. The modest elevation allows occasional walkers and active families to cover it for half a day. Half of the route is through undergrowth, and the other half on open paths exposed to the sun through meadows and orchards. On leaving the village of Grand-Coeur, the route branches off to the left and takes a very pleasant little path in the undergrowth. You then cross a meadow area by a wider path, offering beautiful views of the Tarentaise valley. On the opposite slope, you can see the Morel valley and its 82m waterfall, as well as the Black Horse (2,832m) which dominates it. You then reach the village of Villoudry (720 m) which you cross to re-enter a sector alternating meadows and undergrowth. After a few stretches of road, interspersed with passages on small paths, you reach the highest point of the loop: the Baroque church of Villargerel (845 m), a listed historic monument. You then retrace your steps to the exit of Villargerel, then turn left towards Villoudry. A pleasant path in the undergrowth leads you to Bellevue (600 m). Be careful, you cross the road several times. You then reach Sous les Granges (510 m), and follow the departmental road for 300 meters passing under the national road. You branch off to the right before crossing the bridge on the railway track and follow it via a small road. After passing the Plan du Truy (460 m), you return to Grand Coeur by the Chemin des Vignes from which you observe ancient terraces dedicated to vines and several sartots (small sheds) which were formerly used by the farmers of the hillside.

Through forests and fields, discover the hillsides of Aigueblanche with no technical difficulties. This half day walk, though local villages and small woods is ideal for casual hikers and active families. The loop starts uphill through meadows and small woods, allowing coverage on hot days, until arriving into Villoudry. Further up, the trail goes through Villargerel, offering a view of the valley down below, but also onto the Vallée du Morel and its 82 meter waterfall and The Cheval Noir (2832m) up above. The baroque church of Villargerel, historic monument, can be found at the highest point of the trail. On the way back down, small paths wind once again through the woodlands, from the top to the eastern side of Villoudry and then Bellevue and Les Granges. Once at the bottom, follow the road for 300 meters and then the train tracks until passing the Plan du Truy. To head back to Grand Coeur on the Chemin des Vignes, walk along the old terraces, built to accommodate the vines, on an easy path with several benches to catch a last glimpse of the view.

You begin by making your way up into the meadow-orchards and then continue on to the hamlet of Villargerel and its remarkable Baroque church – the literal highpoint of your outing. The return journey is by way of an old path through bygone vineyards whose existence is still evidenced by terraces and “sartots” (stone huts used as wine cellars). This route takes you on a discovery of water in all its forms: waterfall, stream, river and thermal springs… From Aigueblanche, the first stretch runs pleasantly along the banks of the River Isère via the former Olympic village and the thermal baths park. You then begin to climb up towards Chaniet Wood where you'll be able to combine sport and relaxation. On leaving the wood, make sure you stay focused as the uphill track gets a little more technical. Ride through the pretty village of Saint Oyen next before heading down a single track path towards Le Morel waterfall: take care on the descent. Enjoy making your way round the Morel interpretation trail then go back up Le Bois for a fun downhill stretch at St Nicolas' Chapel. Stop to admire the view first! Roam the Valley, along the river banks of the Morel and the Isère. Start from the Bellecombe Bridge, left river bank of the Isère, in the village of Grand-Aigueblanche (460m). Warm up on a 2km flat path along the Isère, going upstream. The path then goes slightly uphill, past the small flood dams built to protect the towns in 1905. The signposts won’t take you all the way to the viewpoint above the Morel waterfall but it’s only a 5 minute detour to appreciate its natural beauty and the first human interventions to fight against a once deadly torrent. A short path (200m) then takes you through St-Oyen, hamlet of Grand-Aigueblanche. Once on the other side, you’ll arrive in the Bois Chaniet woods. The quick downhill passage will bring you to the thermal resort of La Léchère-les-Bains and then through the garden, past the oriental style buildings. Join back up with the Isère on a final flat stretch to the Morel leisure centre and back to the starting point.

A valley bottom course along the water and in the undergrowth ideal for families and on hot days. This 12 km loop is suitable for all types of hikers. The fairly low elevation allows beginners, children and trained walkers to discover various environments in an Alpine valley. The route follows a few small sections of road but the majority of the hike takes place in the forest and at the water's edge. The loop begins at the Aigueblanche bridge (450m) and takes a well laid out and flat path along the Isère where a few benches are installed. Bird watching is quite common. You can also start the hike from the spa resort of La Léchère, or from the Morel swimming pool in Aigueblanche At the confluence with the Morel torrent, the route branches off to the left via a small undergrowth path along the numerous waterfalls that mark out this tumultuous stream. You cross the departmental road for the first time. At the Bellecombe bridge, after a second road crossing, you can continue on your choice on the 2 banks of the Morel. A botanical trail on your left, or an interpretation trail on the Morel facilities on your right. There is a picnic area on the left path. A belvedere (610m) allows the end of the path, on each bank, to admire the Morel Waterfall, falling more than 80 meters high. From the path on the right, walkers will then access via a small path to a beautiful panorama (625m) over the village of Saint-Oyen and the lower Tarentaise. Please note, this portion is also frequented by downhill mountain bikes. Then, begin the crossing of Saint-Oyen before diving into the forest which leads to the Bois Chaniet site by a small path in the shade and during which it is possible to observe various animals, ungulates, birds or insects for the luckiest or the most observant. Chemin du Bois Chaniet then offers other botanical signs. It is also possible to observe vestiges of vine terraces today partially covered by vegetation. Workout-type workshops also mark the trail. A gentle descent makes it possible to reach the edge of the Isère which the walkers will follow while crossing the Thermal Park of La Léchère-les-Bains. All that remains is to return to the Aigueblanche bridge by the Berges de l'Isère path, via the Morel swimming pool and the wooden walkway over the Morel torrent. The loop can be done in both directions and is also practiced in trail. Classic alpine valley walk, along the diversity of rivers and waterfalls it has to offer. From to Aigueblanche Bridge, take a stroll on the flat path along the Isère River where a few benches are available. Where the water bed meets the river Morel, take a left turn onto a little path under the trees which follows the dozens of small waterfalls. Arriving at the Bellecombe Bridge, continue on the right bank of the Morel where a guided botanic trail and a picnic area await. A lookout ends the path and allows a fantastic view of the Morel Waterfall, falling over 80 meters high. Continue the path in the woods to view the landscape over the ‘Saint-Oyen’ village and the lower ‘Tarentaise’ Valley. The village is then joined before delving into the ‘Bois Chaniet’ forest thanks to a shaded path where the curious will find many varieties of animals, birds or insects. A slight slope then joins once again the Isère river, through the thermal park of ‘La Léchère-les-Bains’. The same flat path first used loops back to the Aigueblanche Bridge.

Often quoted at 2000 m, the summit is actually at 1993 m, but this in no way diminishes your achievement - you will have climbed a legendary pass that has featured in the Tour de France 23 times!

Discover the historic center of Moûtiers: its pedestrian street and its shops, the medieval streets, the squares, the old bridge, the old archbishop's palace, the cathedral ... The old bridge or Saint-Pierre bridge built in 1785 and classified as a Historic Monument since 1980. It is the oldest bridge in the city. It already existed in Roman times. Very often rebuilt due to the heavy floods of Isère in the 18th century in particular. Below, you will see a passage called barrioz that the washerwomen used to do their laundry. These barrioz were closed in the evening by barriers (hence their name) in order to avoid unwanted intrusions into the city from the banks. This circuit will reveal many other curiosities linked to the history of the city. For the little story : Moûtiers, known as Darantasia in the Roman era, was the historical capital of the Tarentaise (IIès). At the crossroads of the Valleys and located on the old Roman road linking Milan to Vienna (38), the town was often frequented by pilgrims on their way to visit the tombs of the apostles in Rome, as well as by merchants and soldiers. Home to what is now a thousand-year-old cathedral, Moûtiers had a bishop right from the 5th century, when the bishops became archbishops before being awarded the honorific title of ‘Comte de Tarentaise’in the Middle Ages. A major religious centre, the town’s name doubtless comes from“Monsaterium”: the word for the collected spaces of the cathedral, archbishop’s palace and cloisters. Cable cars enable to access the mountain pastures easily. You will discover our most beautiful views on foot or by MTB. You can access La Lauzière massif without a vehicule. Open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8.15am to 12.15am and from 1.30pm to 4.45pm. Passage tickets, 1/2 day or for the day are sold at the departure of cable cars. Dogs can access cable cars, but they must be kept on a leash and muzzled.

Two hamlets with a heartfelt name, from the word Cors; a Romanesque form curtis means enclosure or farmyard.

The pretty village of Saint-Oyen nestles on the left sloping banks of the Morel, a tributary of the River Isère, at an altitude of 586m. It is named after its patron saint Eugendus (Oyend in French); this applies for the three villages of Saint-Oyen in the Aosta Valley, Saint-Oyens in the canton of Vaud and Saint-Oyen in the Tarentaise area. It overlooks Aigueblanche basin. Steeped in a rich past and a longstanding tradition in these Alpine valleys, the village boasts two chapels, Saint-Roch and Notre-Dame-du-Puits, and a Baroque-style church (17th century).

The Saint-Roch Chapel was completed in 1634, that is four years after the plague of 1630. It is dedicated to Saint Roch, Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian invoked against this disease. The people provided the chapel with goods that annually brought in a bichet of wheat, two bichets of rye, two bichets of barley and six of florins. Rectors who succeeded had to celebrate that once a month. The inhabitants of the village received the patronage right from the beginning and kept it until the Revolution.

This is a great forest park to come for a wander or workout amidst beautiful scenery! Just next to the thermal baths, the trail, specially laid out by the National Forestry Office (ONF) is a lovely way of exploring the forest park in Chaniet Wood whilst keeping fit on the bespoke facilities approved for outdoor fitness use. Chaniet Wood extends from Hôtel Radiana across East-facing slopes at an altitude of between 430m and 530m. Make your way through refreshing parts in the shade and dry grasslands before reaching a stunning viewpoint over the Vanoise glaciers. Dive into the great adventure of La Léchère waters, an exhibition to visit with your family; friends, or in a group. Since 1859, the hyperthermal waters of La Léchère-les-Bains have brought life to the area: development of thermalism, tourism and recently of geothermal energy. It is in this context that the museum space of the waters of La Léchère, Aquacalida, opened its doors in 2014. The tour gradually takes the visitor through the history of La Léchère, the development and benefits of thermalism, the advent of geothermal energy and the major local and global energy issues. Interactive and fun, the Aquacalida space is a place of cultural and scientific mediation accessible to all, to children and adults alike, to novices and initiates.

The Aigueblanche vineyard was once highly reputed and the quality of its wine praised particularly by the Royal Academic Society of Savoie (1845). From very ancient times, the well-exposed hillsides were planted with vines. The main grape varieties at the time were the douce noir de le Bois, le guy noir, martincot, le gouche, le régentât and hyvernais de Tarentaise for red wine and la jacquère, le guy blanc, le gouais, le bellochin and le blanc verdun for white wine. In the 18th and 19th centuries, villagers in the Aigueblanche valley bought the feudal rights over livestock rearing, crop-growing, the wood and the vines, which were the property of the archdiocese and nobility.Each family had their own sartot, a typical hut for storing tools. In 1876 phylloxera reached Savoie and wiped out most of the vines. Each of the plants had to be replanted one by one and many vinegrowers used more rustic seedlings that better withstood the climate. It was at this time that the present-day vine route would be developed to facilitate vinegrowing work between Grand-Coeur and Aigueblanche. Nowadays much of the vineyard has been abandoned: the only surviving remnants of this past being the terraces and the sartos.

The meadow-orchard’s main feature is the tree-shaded grassland that provides fodder and pasture. Trees and grass each have their own part to play, growing alongside each other and interacting. Beneath the trees, protected from winter frosts, the grass grows more quickly; in summer, it is less subject to evaporation and has a quality all its own (not as coarse as in the open fields, where it contains more cellulose). It only needed to be cut twice to produce enough hay. Cattle were seldom allowed to graze in them in case they damaged the soil or choked on the fruit (when cows had to be driven across or alongside an orchard, they were muzzled). They were given access more readily in the autumn, after the apples had been picked.

Refuge located in the Lauzière Massif. It offers a unique panoramic view of the Aigueblanche valleys, the Vanoise glaciers and the border range. Between the Tarentaise and Maurienne regions, on the way to the Col de la Madeleine, a pass made famous by the Tour de France, a narrow road winds for 5km through undergrowth and bilberry bushes, taking hikers to the Logis des Fées refuge at an altitude of 1,840m. The refuge is unique in that it is powered by 5 different energy sources: hydro-electricity, photovoltaic, gas, wood and photothermal. The refuge offers many opportunities for walks and hikes. One of the easiest is the two-lake loop (Arpetaz/Branlay). Further up, a small gully (Biolène), dug into the hillside at an even slope, used to supply water to shepherds and formed the small artificial lake of Arpettaz at 1950 altitude. At the refuge, you can enjoy a meal while taking in the breathtaking views of the Vanoise glaciers. 5 bedrooms: 1 with 5 beds and 4 with 4 beds 1/2 board (bed, dinner, breakfast) or full board.
