A walk that is accessible to everyone, in amazing surroundings. Lakes, swamps, vineyard, villages, fortified house, woods... a variety of incredible sites, at the foot of the Dent du Chat Mountain ! Easy itinerary. Duration : 4:30 hours. Starts from the car park of the leisure centre in St Jean de Chevelu. From the beach parking lot, the path leads to the village of Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu, then on to a delightfully sunny path. It's easy to see why vines thrive here! When you reach the hamlet of Les Grangeons, take a look at these little buildings, known as sartos. They were used to store tools and preserve wine. The inhabitants of Chapelle-du-Mont-du-Chat, on the other side of the mountain, used to spend the night here when they came to work the vines. At the picturesque hamlet of Monthoux, adorned with a chapel and tower, don't miss the viewpoint, which can be reached by a quick round trip. The balcony path at the foot of the cliffs is an easier walk. Finally, you'll discover a fortified house at La Platière. These buildings, built to defend Yenne in the Middle Ages, are a local specialty: there are 10 in Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu alone! How many have you seen along the way?

Itinerary that enables you to discover the fantastic view from the famous Dent du Chat Mountain, a legendary peak. Protruding summit. This course is meant for experienced and well-equipped hikers. Difficult itinerary. 6 hours. Starts from the car park of the leisure centre in St Jean de Chevelu. Difficult route. The starting point is the car park at the Base de Loisirs des Lacs in St Jean de Chevelu or the car park at the La Source hotel-restaurant. Caution: the final climb is aerial and technical: be very careful. The path is bordered by rocky bars: do not stray from the path. Passages with cables are your own responsibility. The chroniclers of the Middle Ages mention in their accounts the existence of an ugly tomcat who terrorised everyone crossing the pass. He would let 19 people pass but always devoured the 20th. Fortunately, a brave and inspired soldier on his way home had the idea of having his rifle blessed by the parish priest before climbing the mountain. The beast, hit in the heart, rolled into the lake. According to some, it is not dead and on stormy days, its anger capsizes boats on Lac du Bourget. Was it this cursed cat whose exploits gave the mountain its name, or was it the name of the mountain that inspired the legend?

Let yourself be tempted by the educational ramble of the lakes and swamps of St Jean de Chevelu. A family walk to discover the 2 small lakes of Chevelu and their natural surroundings. Easy walk. Duration : 3 hours. Starts from the car park of the leisure centre in St Jean de Chevelu. The signs describe the birth of the lakes, their conservation and management, as well as the ancient use of the marshes and their close relationship with the vines planted all around them and exploited very early on by the clerks of the old strongholds. The route passes through a number of hamlets, woods and meadows. The birth of the lakes: The two small Chevelu lakes are nestled in a small basin between the Lierre mountain and the Mont de la Charvaz. They were formed when part of the Dent du Chat collapsed following the retreat of the last Würm glaciers. This collapse is thought to have created a dam giving rise to a lake. Initially a single lake, the basin gradually filled in and split into two smaller lakes. They are relatively small (6.4 and 4.4 ha) and no more than 8 m deep. Together with the surrounding marshes, springs and streams, they form a natural basin with high added value.

This itinerary combines both the "Mont de Lierre" and "Lacs de Chevelu" trails, offering a 30 km route which has lots of hills but with the added bonus of an amazing range of scenery ! Lakes, vineyards, river, forests – you will find the whole lot! From the parking des lacs, walk along the mountain side of the lake towards the village of Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu. Take the road up to the church. Immediately on leaving the village, take a wide track on the left. This crosses the vineyards and joins a small road. Follow this road up to Château de Bergin. Take the path alongside the château at the foot of the vineyard. At the end of the vineyard, the path climbs steeply to rejoin the D210. Here, the route crosses the road to reach a small oratory. From here, take the main road back to the village of Billième. Opposite the town hall, turn right onto a small road that climbs up to the vineyard and the Croix des Fourches. The itinerary crosses the vineyard, then rejoins the D210. Take the D210 on your right, then turn left quickly after the bend to reach the summit of Butte St-Romain. From the summit, make a U-turn for 200 m, then turn left onto a track that descends through the vineyards to join the D210 above the village of Jongieux. The descent along the road takes you through a number of hamlets to Barcontian. After this hamlet, cross the D210 to take a track opposite. Leave this track to take a small path on the right, on the hillside. It joins the Rhône plain. Follow the signs to the hamlet of Etain. At Etain, turn right onto a farm track leading to the banks of the Rhône, and follow the Rhône towards Yenne. Shortly before Yenne, turn left onto a wide track that intersects with the D921. The route follows small roads through the hamlet of Les Bernards. Then take the road towards Billième as far as the hamlet of Bas Somont. On leaving the hamlet, a path on the left bypasses the road. The gradient (uphill) here is steep! The route then climbs up the road into the heart of the vineyards. Follow the D44 for 1 km, then turn right onto a farm track that takes you to the first slopes of Mont de Lierre. The path soon leaves the vineyards and climbs steeply into the undergrowth. A short ascent and a traverse through oak woods with views over Yenne. Follow the forest signs. After two short portage sections, the final descent to the Chevelu lakes begins. Beware, the end of the descent is difficult: be careful, there are slabs and ruts! At the end of the wood, you'll find a small road that you'll have to walk down to reach the Chevelu lakes.

This relatively short trail is not lacking some challenge. Running between vineyards and woods, you will discover the Château du Bergin, an oratory and then several little view points over the plain on your way back to the Lacs de Chevelu. From the parking des lacs, walk along the mountain side of the lake towards the village of Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu. Take the road up to the church. Immediately on leaving the village, take a wide track on the left. This crosses the vineyards and joins a small road. Follow this road up to Château de Bergin. Take the path alongside the château at the foot of the vineyard. At the end of the vineyard, the path climbs steeply to rejoin the D210. Here, the route crosses the road to reach a small oratory. From the oratory, follow a large path that slopes gently down to the ivy wood. Beware, the final descent into the wood is tricky: be careful, there are slabs and ruts! At the end of the wood, a small road leads down to the Chevelu lakes.

The loop offers a gentle ascent and a crossing through oak trees. The route is dominated by the rugged terrain of the Dent du Chat and the Charvaz mountain. From the parking des lacs, walk along the mountain side of the lake towards the village of Saint-Jean-de-Chevelu. Take the road up to the church. Immediately on leaving the village, take a wide track on the left. This crosses the vineyards and joins a small road. Follow this road up to Château de Bergin. Take the path alongside the château at the foot of the vineyard. At the end of the vineyard, the path climbs steeply to rejoin the D210. Here, the route crosses the road to reach a small oratory. From here, take the main road back to the village of Billième. Opposite the town hall, turn right onto a small road that climbs up to the vineyard and the Croix des Fourches. This trail, mainly through the forest, takes you to the summit of the legendary Dent du Chat, where the view of the Lac du Bourget is breathtaking. Caution: the access to the summit is exposed and equipped with cables. Careful attention is required.

A family-run business for 4 generations, Caveau Quinard, whose vines are located on the high banks of the Rhône Valley in Massignieu-de-Rives, close to the ViaRhôna, has been organically farmed since 2010. The Quinard estate comprises 12.5 hectares of vines. The vineyards are farmed organically. The Quinard estate is also committed to providing a warm welcome: a smile is the order of the day, tastings of the estate's wines are offered, and numerous tourist brochures (in French and Dutch) are available for customers. Julien Quinard made the commitment to organic farming in 2009, the year in which he converted the entire vineyard to organic methods. No synthetic products (herbicides, insecticides) or chemical fertilisers are used. The vines are treated only with minerals and plants in order to produce the healthiest grapes possible. The vinification process is traditional, with no yeast added. This means more manual work (ploughing one traille out of 2, leaving the other as grass), which makes it easier for the equipment to pass through. It delights everybody, old or young; have fun on the beach by the St Jean de Chevelu Lake. Its sand area and its vast meadow are a very much appreciated playing ground in summertime. Nice surroundings : near the vineyard and at the foot of the Dent du Chat Mountain. The beach is next to Camping des Lacs. A swing is available for children. A number of picnic tables are available for gourmet breaks. The pontoon is equipped with a diving board. Access to the beach is free except in July and August. Pets are not allowed on site.

The Crêt de Monthoux offers breathtaking views of the Dent du Chat, the vineyards and the Chevelu lakes. It's a 5-minute climb from the hamlet. It's also a stopover on the Tour des Lacs de Chevelu hiking trail, a 4h30 loop. Crêt de Monthoux overlooks the unspoilt hamlet of Les Grangeons. This hamlet is made up of old sartos, also known as "grangeons", which have now been restored. These small buildings were used to store tools and preserve wine from the cellars. The Chevelu lakes were formed by the collapse of part of the Dent du Chat after the retreat of the last Würm glaciers. Their surface area is relatively small and their depth does not exceed 8m. Together with the surrounding marshes, springs and streams, they form a natural basin with a high heritage value.

Located very close to the La Source restaurant, on the Col du Chat road, the viewpoint gives you a panoramic view over the lakes of St Jean de Chevelu, the Charvaz Mountain, the Mont Tournier and the mountains of Ain, including the Colombier. The "soft mode" gallery in the Chat tunnel enables pedestrians and cyclists to link the Savoyard foreland to Lac du Bourget easily and safely. Created in parallel with the Tunnel du Chat, the secondary gallery provides a safe passage for pedestrians and cyclists. From the two access platforms on the west and east sides, its passage avoids the steepness of the Col; combined with the signposted cycle routes, it offers variations for everyone. Finally, a series of 30 pictures illustrate the different sites in Savoie along the route.
