Camping de l'Ill: Uncover Mulhouse and Surrounding Treasures

This walk runs along both sides of the banks of the Ill, Alsace's main river (238 km), which rises in Winkel (Alsatian Jura) and flows into the Rhine north of Strasbourg after passing through the Sundgau, Mulhouse, Colmar and Selestat. Departure is from the Passerelle de l'Ill on the west side, near the Maison des berges.

The first municipal school was founded in 1831 and, well before the rest of France, it was attended by both boys and girls. The spatial extension and the very rapid increase in population following industrial development determined the establishment of schools in the neighbourhoods. The German annexation of 1871, which made school compulsory, accelerated the process. Schools were moved into old buildings or were built specifically to meet the requirements of hygiene and aesthetic education from the beginning of the 20th century onwards. The start is made on rue des Franciscains.

This tour passes through the various hills of Dornach, and through several urban areas of the village incorporated into Mulhouse in 1914. The route is signposted four times in succession and can be travelled in three separate sections from tram to tram (Dornach-University Station 2.5 km, University-Coteaux 4 km, Coteaux-Gare Dornach 2 km).

This semi-urban, semi-rural route crosses both the western part of the Dornach-Mer Rouge district and the Doller plain between Morschwiller and Lutterbach. The return journey takes a few minutes by tram 3 or the tram-train.

This tram-to-tram route crosses the western districts of Mulhouse. You will find public parks, old factories, churches, pavilions and buildings built from the end of the 19th century to the present day.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, employers, mutual credit unions and municipalities tried to provide the poor part of the population with healthy and moralising housing. It was first of all the employers' initiative, via the Société Mulhousienne des Cités Ouvrières (SOMCO), which in 1853 gave birth to a workers' housing estate unique in Europe for its precocity, innovation in the form of buildings and the possibility of home ownership. At the end of the 19th century, it was the mutual credit unions (workers' and Catholic) that brought about the flowering of similar housing in the city (ground floor, two storeys and attic space: the R+2+C), a model taken up by developer-builders such as Buhler. However, it was the municipality that became the main player from the 1870s onwards. In the inter-war period, the socialists in power developed the public or semi-public response to poor housing, by intervening in various districts (Drouot, Haut Poirier, etc.), then, after the Second World War, by building small collectives (Wagner and Sellier housing estates), which preceded one of the first ZUPs in France, that of Les Coteaux. Departing from Lausanne, head to the medieval town of Gruyères, home to the famous Swiss cheese!  Leave Lausanne by bus and climb up into the alpine pastures to reach Gruyères.  After a tour around the town, your guide will take you to a Swiss chocolate factory to show you how famous Swiss chocolate is made.  Then head to an old alpine cheese factory. Enjoy a Swiss cheese tasting and learn more about the national dish: fondue.  Learn to make your own Swiss fondue and try the traditional dish.  After your meal, relax and climb on board the Golden Express, a panoramic train which crosses the alpine pastures and the heights of Lake Geneva. Enjoy incredible views of the lake and the Alps. When you get off the train, get back on your bus and head to Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. The Passerelle de l'Ill, in the shape of a Chinese bridge, was built in 1957 at the same time as the regulation of the Ill river. Particularity: its axis goes straight to the television tower of Rebberg.

The SACM replaced the original André Koechlin et Cie factory (founded in 1826) until 1870. It employed up to 5000 people in 1952. Opposite the entrance was the site of the former SACM private bridge, demolished in 2010, which gave access to the factory and served the wood depot in Rue de Galfingue.
