Description

Starting out from the Bois de Neuville, opposite the commune of Neuville-sur-Ailette, this pleasant walk (part of which is steep) will take you towards the Midesse valley and the heights of the plateau, not far from the Ferme du Poteau d'Ailles on the Chemin des Dames, before descending to an ancient village (now totally razed to the ground and of which nothing remains), apart from a monument erected in its memory.

And all this on a lovely section of the Grande Randonnée (GR) 142 footpath - doesn't that sound tempting? So let's get going!

Lake Ailette

At the end of the 1970s, it was decided to create this artificial reservoir, which in 1984 became home to a departmental leisure centre and a golf course. In 2007, the Pierre & Vacances group opened France's third Center Parcs, the Domaine du Lac de l'Ailette. Since its creation, the lake has been home to many migratory bird species, which is why it has been classified as a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest (ZNIEFF)...

Poteau d'Ailles Farm

Probably built in 1924, this imposing farmhouse - still in use today - is located at the highest point of the Chemin des Dames, at an altitude of around 200 metres. It is part of the commune of Paissy, which is more than 2 km to the south...

Ailles monument

This strange, isolated monument awaits you at the bottom of the RD 102: it is a commemorative stele erected by the Touring Club de France in 1932 on the very site of the village of Ailles, which was completely razed to the ground during the terrible fighting of 1917...Note the dedication of the monument: ‘Here was Ailles’. This famous site is part of the circuit of destroyed villages on the Chemin des Dames, and there is an information desk at the entrance to give you an insight into the village's history...
