Circuit à vélo de Rochechouart au site de Peyrassoulat

On the banks of the Tardoire, in the Peyrassoulat area, there are hidden treasures. The Peyrassoulat site is classified as a Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest, thanks to 3 western hybrid plane trees, an eastern plane tree and 4 yew trees whose branches form a remarkable canopy of vegetation. One of the plane trees is classified, with a 40 m span and 6 m circumference.

At the crossroads of the Rochechouart forest, the Bramefan oak stands majestically at 4.60 metres in circumference. It takes its name from the deer that "bramaient la faim" in the Rochechouart forest. A remarkable tree that's well worth the detour!

Chéronnac is located in the Périgord-Limousin Natural Park. The Charente river rises here, hence the village?s ancient name: Carentenago. The church is built on the site of a chapel, itself built on a motte castrale. The church was fortified until La Fronde. Not to be missed: the 13th-century portal and latch, and a 17th-century funerary liter painted with the Rousiers coat of arms. Situated on the banks of the Tardoire, the Peyrassoulat site, classified as a ZNIEFF, boasts exceptional flora: two enormous plane trees spread their branches over a width of some forty meters, and four yew trees have been present on the site for over 500 years. If you pass through the village of Montoume, you will be struck by the color of the stone of the houses. This red rock is in fact an impactite formed when a meteorite fell some 200 million years ago.

Vayres has been occupied since prehistoric times (Puybosse, Merlis), then during the Gallo-Roman period (Chalat) and the feudal period (motte de Merlis). The church of Saint Jean was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century, replacing the churches of Saint Georges and Saint Pierre. Located in the Parc Naturel Périgord-Limousin, follow the many hiking trails to discover the village of Vayres in an original way! At the bend of a sunken path, thanks to the many viewpoints, the flora and fauna will no longer hold any secrets for you, as will the small heritage: clédier (la Treille), wash-house in the village, and the many good fountains (Bonnefont, chez Béjard)...

Rochechouart has preserved traces of the fall of a meteorite 200 million years ago. The Maison de la Réserve (museum) is dedicated to protecting these rocks, which can be seen in many of the town's buildings. Its name is linked to the family of the Viscounts of Rochechouart, who reigned for over 800 years. The family's roots are to be found in the château, built on the rocky outcrop from the 13th century onwards. Since 1985, it has housed the departmental museum of contemporary art. The ancient fortified town boasts an exceptional built heritage: the church with its torso spire, houses built of impactite, the 15th-century Maison des Consuls?
