Château-Landon

CHÂTEAU-LANDON, A MEDIEVAL TOWN IN THE HEART OF THE GÂTINAIS Discover the medieval town... A hidden gem in southern Seine-et-Marne! Awarded the ‘Village de Caractère’ designation by the Department in 2014.Château-Landon, a charming medieval town, captivates visitors with its history and scenery. Perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Fusain Valley, it offers stunning views and invites you to stroll through its narrow streets. Its history dates back to Antiquity, when the site occupied a strategic position on the main trade routes. In the Middle Ages, the town experienced a real boom and became an important centre in the Gâtinais region, before coming under royal control in 1068. As you wander through the old town centre, this past is still visible in the stone: remains of fortifications, religious monuments and steep alleyways bear witness to this rich history. The Maison de la Pierre offers an insight into another aspect of this history, linked to the quarrying of limestone that contributed to the construction of numerous monuments, including those in Paris. To extend your visit, several routes allow you to explore the surrounding area. Hiking trails and cycle routes offer different ways to explore the countryside, from country lanes to open viewpoints. A discovery trail marked with information panels also guides visitors to an orientation table providing an interpretation of the landscape. A map is available to accompany your visit and make your journey easier. Château-Landon also has plenty to offer nature lovers. The Parc de la Tabarderie provides a pleasant space to relax, featuring around ten picnic tables to make the most of the setting, whilst the Prés Patouillats wetland offers an immersion in a preserved environment. After the tour, the exploration naturally continues with local flavours. The Petit Pèlerin Gourmand shop, 100% Gâtinais, showcases local produce, whilst several restaurants offer a chance to enjoy a convivial meal. To make getting around easier, an electric bike station is available on site. It allows you to explore the surrounding area in complete freedom. Finally, guided tours are available throughout the year. They offer a deeper understanding of the town’s history and allow you to appreciate all its treasures. Whether you’re just passing through or staying for a while, Château-Landon can be explored at your own pace, offering a blend of heritage, nature, lifestyle and accommodation options to extend your experience. A little extra! If you take a stroll along the Scandibérique towpath (EV3) beside the Canal du Loing, you’ll come across a thirteenth information panel recounting the history of the canal bridge at Néronville.
