La Giettaz church

The church of La Giettaz, dedicated to Saint Pierre-aux-Liens, was rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century to replace the medieval building. Its bulbous bell tower and its furniture make it a fine example of late Savoyard Baroque. The first church in the village was built at the very end of the 14th century. Imagine, before this construction, the Giettois went to mass, risking their lives in winter, in Flumet for the inhabitants of the village, and in Megève for the inhabitants of the hamlet of Plan! If the exterior is admirable by the presence of the majestic onion bell tower with two lanterns, the interior of the vast building derives its originality from its Greek cross plan: this choice allowed the construction of a central dome, which was decorated with frescoes. in 1848. Raise your eyes to the sky: restored in the spring of 1999, their colors await your eyes! In 1732, a sculpted altarpiece was installed, paid for by the Giettois who had emigrated to Paris. The current major altarpiece, from 1849, partially reuses this old decor (the pale green part with the twisted columns), so it retains the vitality born of the Baroque spirit.

Villa Jeanne d'Arc

Villa Jeanne d’Arc, built between 1908-1914, is the first example of La Giettaz’s legacy as a resort. Initially a hotel on the Route des Grandes Alpes, then a rest home and finally a preventatorium, it traces the evolution of tourism in the village. At the beginning of the 20th century, at the initiative of the village priest, local residents from La Giettaz built a hotel on the Route des Aravis that boasted every modern comfort, in anticipation of the village’s development as a resort that would attract a growing number of tourists at this location, crossed by the Route des Grandes Alpes. After the war, the establishment was given a new role, that of rest home and then a preventorium. Until 2001, when the Villa closed, it welcomed thousands of guests who contributed to the village’s tourism boom. Recently, the building has found a new vocation, accommodating groups.

Sainte Foy Church

The "Sainte Foy Church of La Clusaz was built in 1821 according to Camille Ruphy's plans, architect of Annecy. There has been a church in La Clusaz since 1285.In 1974, the church was extensively rebuilt as it was in a state of disrepair. The bulb bell tower was built between 1751 and 1762. This characteristic is no doubt the alpine expression of baroque art, which was at this time, to be seen on various monuments in Europe.

St Pierre Church of Manigod

Manigod church was built in baroque style.Originally, the church was a wooden building with a dirt floor. At the end of the 17th century, it was rebuilt in the baroque style that can be found on the facade with its portal. The bulbous bell tower of the church, typical of the time, is not satisfactory, because the sound of the bells is not heard enough in all the surrounding hamlets. Extension work on the church was carried out at the end of the 19th century. The bell tower is then rebuilt and moved. Inside the church, you find ridge vaults and cruciform pillars. The writings concerning her only date back to 1414, on the occasion of the pastoral visit of MGR Bertrand, Bishop of Geneva. Disability accessibility: The church is accessible, a door has been specifically designed for access to people in accompanied wheelchairs. Note that the right door opens from the inside.

The road of the chapels

Discover the six chapels of Manigod during a hiking or a car-trip.Manigod is a very extensive valley and is made up of 6 hamlets. Each of its hamlets all have their chapels and bread ovens. The chapels date from the Baroque period, a rural Baroque. They are all built with donations from the locals. The chapel route is a new project, proposed by the neighborhoods of the valley, as well as the City of Manigod. They are used for protection: protection against famines, protection of inhabitants, crops, natural disasters; but also for certain requests such as good weather or rain. The route offers a heritage and historical discovery of each of the six chapels present on the territory. The chapels concerned are called: Villard-Dessous, Montpellaz, Plan des Berthats, Joux, Tournance and La Charmette. For each, an outdoor information panel explaining their history is available to visitors. This route of the chapels which is to be done by car, can be the object of a walk thanks to a pedestrian path between the chapels of Joux, Tournance and La Charmette. Guided tours are also organized with the Thônes Guides Office. An accompanying brochure is available and free at the Tourist Office of the village of Manigod, but also at the two tourist information points of Croix Fry and Merdassier.

discovering the baroque

Admire the heritage-listed framed altarpiece from the 18th century.Located in the heart of Thones, the St Maurice church was built in the 17th century. Between the french revolution and the 1944 bombardments, there have been many stages of restoration, lasting until today. Witness to the baroque period which dominated Savoy eclesiastical architecture between 1650 and 1750, the onion bulb clock tower and the framed alterpiece are noteworthy. You will be seduced by the balance of its architecture and the theatricality of the statuary. The clock tower houses 4 cast bells : 2 from the Gautier foundry and the other two cast by the Paccard Brothers. The framed alteripiece was created by the sculptor J. Jacquetti. This unique piece is an assembly of finely sculpted and painted woodwork, which supports the altar. In 1923 the framed altar was listed as a historical monument.
