TIDE MILL OF ACEA DE AMA

If we continue walking down the avenue that we just crossed, we will find ourselves next to an old tide mill building, now restored and converted into a cultural centre and Museo dos Muíños.

A tide mill is a type of mill that uses the force of the rising and falling of sea water, it is for this reason that it is found in places extremely close to the sea. On the Galician coasts there are 14 catalogued, some restored and converted into museums. This one is the oldest in Galicia, with word of its existence thanks to a donation from King Fernando II to the monastery of Sobrado dos Monxes in 1186. It was reconstructed in the 16th century, but at the end of the 20th century it was abandoned.

Now restored, we can see a cohort of various buildings; the home, the mil and dependent annexes. It boasts four millstones but only one really runs on sea water. The dam is severely reduced due to the construction of a motorway and railroad in its surroundings which have been heavily affected by urbanisation. It used to be in the estuary of the river Trabe, for which it also took advantage of these waters.
