SHIPBUILDING

Fene is a municipality which switched from being an eminently rural space to being a more urban one and a nucleus of the periphery of the city of Ferrol. This is particularly due to the location on its coast, in the town of Perlío, of the Astano shipyards in 1941 and later the construction between 1966 and 1968 of the As Pías bridge providing a connection to Ferrol; at around this time Astano was transformed into a shipyard too for the construction of large transport boats, particularly petrol tankers.

In this context Fene attained 8,000 inhabitants in 1950, doubling this figure in just 30 years. This led to great urbanistic planning, particularly in the area nearest the location of the shipyard and the new access to Ferrol, growth which transformed the old agricultural landscape. Today, new single-family homes are being built which can be seen clearly along the side of the path, particularly on the stretch entering this municipal district from Neda. Alongside these new constructions some old abandoned houses can be observed and a few of them have been restored. which are spread around the urbanistic map of Fene, some in good condition, others not. One example is the house known as “Casa Cela”, crowning Castelao Park, which is next to the road and is the location of a statue dedicated to the clown, a work of the ceramicist Xosé Pérez Porto.
