NAPOLÉON PARK

The Napoleon Park is a 3.9-hectare area close to the town centre and to the banks of the River Moselle. Enjoyed for its shaded areas beneath a wide range of trees, it includes a peat-based garden, a flower garden with a range of flower-bed displays, a rose garden and its adjoining fountain. With large lawn areas for relaxing, it is also the perfect place for a stroll, and there is a large play area for children aged 2 to 12.

TEMPLE PROTESTANT

In 1876, 800 German Protestants requested the construction of a place of worship dedicated to them. Characteristic of Protestant architecture at the end of the 19th century, the temple is surprisingly similar to Catholic churches. Neo-Gothic in style, much favored by the Germans, it features an elongated plan, a tower, a polygonal chevet and, above all, the use of the famous Jaumont stone. The large rose on the façade is particularly reminiscent of the architectural styles of Catholic churches. The interior decoration and colorful stained glass windows are also in the neo-Gothic style. The sobriety of the premises is reminiscent of the religious precepts valued by Protestants.

CASTLE'S YARD

The neighborhood still called the "castle's yard" today designated the first core of Thionville. Originally, this small terrace at the edge of the Moselle was chosen to house a Carolingian domain, called "palacio publico", mentioned in 770. The Counts of Luxembourg built a castle there in the 11th century from which remain the dunjeon and the flea tower (which is a museum today). Private mensions built by the town's provost-marshals, the Eltz and the Raville, can be seen. Finally, the Clarisses settled there in the 17th century.

BELFRY

Symbol of the municipal liberties acquired through the franchise charter of 1239, the Belfry was built in the 14th century and modified in the 16th. It is 45 meters high and is the tallest monument in the city. It is an exception in the east of France, as belfries are more common in northern France and Belgium

THE ORGAN OF ST. MAXIMIN

When you open the doors of Saint-Maximin church, you'd never imagine you'd discover an organ with a thousand stories behind it. Listed as a Monument Historique, it is the result of several creations. The first organ, commissioned for Thionville, appeared in the church as early as 1704. In 1791, at the height of the French Revolution, the parish acquired the organ from Saint-Clément church in Metz! It was love at first sight! In rococo style, the organ stands out from the general sobriety of the church. Its pastel colors are reminiscent of the luxurious objects found in grand châteaux. Its little cherubs and surrounding vegetation transport us back to the 18th century, a time of philosophical and humanist effervescence.

CHURCH OF ST MAXIMIN

Built between 1755 and 1759 in neoclassical style, at the request of the army, the church is called a “stronghold church”. Unlike most churches it has no steeple, but two towers that were used as a lookout point, among other things. The church’s interior decoration is to be admired, especially the four-pillared canopy over the high altar and the magnificent organ built in the 18th century and restored by Kern in 1969
