La Garenne bollard

Armoured stone boundary marker used to demarcate old properties
This sandstone bollard, attached to the bank wall of a stream, is embellished in bas-relief on two opposite sides.
On one side, the shield represents two greyhounds, the identification of which remains enigmatic to this day.
On the opposite side, the coat of arms is identified as that of the Agoult-Pontevès, two of the oldest and most illustrious noble families of Provence, the second of which has been present in the Var since the end of the 10th century. Their union was sealed in 1213, but the origin of the heraldic arms of the Agoult-Pontevès family dates back to 1251 when Foulques 1st, their 6th child, inherited and took their name. The presence of these lords in the Hyères region is attested to at least as far back as the end of the 15th century by the remains of the Château de Giens (Hyères), marking the territory of this seigneury until 1691 and of a marquisate until 1832. The marker's dating therefore covers a wide period!
Restored in 2016, this marker is recognised as an archaeological entity on the national archaeological map.
