Cette église est la seule du département de l'Ain, avec celle d'Attignat, à présenter un clocher hélicoïdal ou en spirale. Il fait partie de la vaste famille européenne des clochers dits "tors", "tordus", "vrillés" ou "flammés".La construction de l'église Saint-Laurent débute en 1417 ; l'édifice est donc majoritairement gothique. Toutefois, on y décèle certains éléments romans qui proviendraient d'une première chapelle, une ancienne prieurale. La modification majeure de l'édifice intervient en 1843, avec la suppression des murs des six chapelles latérales, donnant naissance aux actuels bas-côtés. Vestiges de l'une d'entre elles, les culs-de-lampe du XVe s. imageant les quatre évangélistes (le Tétramorphe) : Saint-Jean (l'aigle), Saint-Marc (le lion), Saint-Luc (le boeuf) et Saint-Mathieu (l'homme). Le clocher fut, comme quasiment tous ceux de la région, détruit au cours de la Terreur (1794). Sa reconstruction s'achève en 1818 et elle est l'oeuvre d'artisans locaux : Dumoulin de Tossiat et Morel de Ceyzériat. L'Europe compte environ 120 clochers tors et on en découvre de nouveaux chaque année. La palme revient à la France où 65 exemplaires sont répertoriés, puis vient l'Allemagne (22), la Belgique (11), l'Autriche (7). Quelques-uns encore en Suisse, Angleterre, Danemark, Italie et Roumanie. Existe même l'association des clochers tors d'Europe.
