The fort at Mons-en-Laonnois – also known as Fort Laniscourt or Fort Sérurier – was built between 1879 and 1883 to defend the plain near Laon as part of the Séré de Rivières plan. At the time, it could accommodate around 250 to 280 men.
Decommissioned in 1912, it served as a storage facility for the German army during both world wars, and was even visited by Adolf Hitler in June 1940.
After serving as an ammunition depot until 1963 and being demilitarised in 1998, it has been owned by the municipality of Mons-en-Laonnois since 2000, and its maintenance is ensured by the Association pour la Restauration, la Sauvegarde et l'Animation du Fort de Mons (ARSAM). It hosts airsoft competitions and live-action role-playing games, among other events.
