Description
Long misunderstood, the tapestry cardboard is essential to the manufacture of a tapestry. Placed under the warp threads of basse-lisse looms, it acts as a pattern for the weaver.
Painted in oil on canvas or gouache on paper, the artistic and heritage value of these cartoons was revealed by Chantal Chirac, an antique dealer and painting restorer, in the late 1980s. She has given them a second life in her gallery-workshop on the Pont de la Terrade in Aubusson, and has built up a unique collection that is now the subject of an associative museum.
