Suzanne Blanche Marguerite Gros, who went down in history as Suzanne Noël, was born in Laon on 19 January 1878. She was the only surviving sibling from a family whose other members died in infancy.
Her parents, Esther and Victor Gros, were members of the Laon bourgeoisie, and her father worked as a saddler and coachbuilder, mainly for the military contingents stationed in Laon at the time.
