
The regional archaeology service Poitou-Charentes attests that the site is occupied since the Gallo-Roman era, this by the identification of traces of ancient «villae» in the place called Menuet. The name of the city would be the contraction of two given names, Berthe and Radegonde. Berthegon’s finest hour coincided with the opening of the "Saumur-La Châtre" railway line in 1986, here in its portion between Loudun and Châtellerault. The rail was used to transport the wine to the Bercy market via Châtellerault. Daniel de la Touche de la Ravardière, another Loudunais who set out to conquer the New Continent. This knight, born in Berthegon in 1570 took part in the colonial impulse of Brazil at the request of Henry IV.
