
Below the départementale road, the Abîme gushes from the gorges into one last ten-metre-high waterfall, before returning to a calm flow, surrounded by greenery and light. This natural scene is said to have inspired Alphonse de Lamartine. As the famous romantic poet wrote: “And I too have drawn half of my blood from this mountain source, I have half of my ancestors in these forests, these torrents, these dungeons of the Saint-Claude valley”.
